I am a boater plus motorcyclist and also ride dirt bikes and 4 wheelers, just turned 55 and still like to have a good time.
I have and enjoyed all of these but I also do not have a fortune to spend.

We are planning a trip to check out some real estate next month and I would like some advice of where I should be looking.

I'm not a pussy but would like an area that my wife would feel secure when I am away.

Texas, RampGirl will welcome all newcomers. :D

I'd mention Louisiana, but it's America's last secret. ;)

We do have tons of water, both salty and fresh. No helmet law, and no state taxes. Gas Friday was 3.33 and you will be in the heart of the majority of drag boat racing.

Years ago we thought we would retire back to the river but no way. Cave Creek, Carefree is all that and more without the BS and better in so many ways IMO . :thumbsup

My votes are: #1 Phoenix, Arizona; and #2 Texas

Good luck and keep us updated with your decision!

Austin real estate is about half the price of Cali and AZ, no state income taxes, great live music scene, Lake Travis, and very easy gun laws....whats not to like?

You missed the part about not having a fortune to spend:D

I love that area. Only can dream of ever having enough scratch to buy a nice place up there.

How about Prescott AZ?

I have never lived there but the weather seems to be great. Boating at Havasu, Mohave, Mead, Powell, or Pleasant. Dirt bike trails are awesome but going the way of California it seems so that may change in the coming years.

Humidity, Bugs, Tornadoes, and crazy high property taxes to make up for no state income tax. :p

Texas has high taxes. RE taxes near the highest in the US.
I still could live there.
In Nevada your retirement checks aren't state taxed.
That's a BFD to many.

Thats what my friend that lives in Ft Worth always says to me.

Republic Of Texas

My step daughter lives in PRescott Valley. Prescott is definitely a nice area. I'm not much for snow but think I could tolerate living there.

One of the smarter guys in a car club once told me this about retirement. Retire in an area that is close to a great hospital with 24 hour emergency services. Sounds kind of funny but he was very serious and if you think about it, it does make pretty good sense. Stroke, heart attack you're close to emergency services. Come down with cancer you'll be making lots of trips to the hospital.

AZ has a kick-ass Gov, who don't take shit from no-one, the toughest Sherrif in America and Open/concealed carry laws....what part of that looks like CA???:headscratch:

You're right, but I'm starting to worry about the trends in some of the bigger cities.

I'm a river rat that grew up on the Mississippi River in a shitty climate too (Iowa) who moved to San Diego 25 years ago & love it. Unfortunately CA is a f---ked-up state & the future is uncertain. I strongly recommend looking at Arizona (anywhere that you fall in love with & there's lots). I like Yuma, but it's a border town & rough around the edges. I actually like that about it though. They have the river, dunes, dirt biking, etc.

I guess you didn't read my post right. I'm talking about the dirt bike trails which were on the OP's wish list. I'm a long time off-roader and dirt biker. I stay pretty tuned into what is happening in that community. The last few years have seen more trails and areas closed in AZ than anytime in its history. We are currently fighting to keep areas open around Prescott, Flagstaff, Payson, and of course Phoenix. However, we are losing to the enviro-Nazis and the .gov types. Just like in Kaliforniastan. :grumble:

I'm not sure if I read it right or wrong....but I certainly did not get that out of it:D

I agree with you on those things about off-roading & the enviro-Nazis (Tree Huggers).:thumbsup

Another vote for Prescott. We have been visiting there for the last 5 years and considering it for our retirement days.

We have been spending a lot of time in Reno the past year or two since my son now is a Nevada resident and owns a home over there. I like the open country out towards Spanish Springs and other areas within 20 miles or so of town.
I love where we live, the climate is great and the outdoor rec opportunities can't be beat. We are very rural but close to everything. The place, however, has become infested with flatlanders who want to change everything and they are destroying the place.
It is easy to tell a transplanted flatlander, they can't drive on country roads and they put up a 10,000 watt floodlight for a porchlight in front of the house they move in to. Afraid of the dark, apparently.
If we are still healthy when Cindy retires, there is a strong probability we will move to the Reno area. Every day I see something on the news or read some new law that convinces me that California is a lost cause and I don't want to be lost with it.
I'd like to by 40-60 acres out there within the next year or two...that is the plan anyway.
Hell if they keep it up I may just move my official residency to my son's address. The house is in a trust so I don't really, "own" it, so to speak. :D

Buy a place in Parker, rent it out in the summer months for prime dollars, and enjoy it for yourself September-Mid May. :hmm

I would retire responsibility. That always seems to get in the way. Family, relaxing and fun need a better showing. :thumbsup
