Are pmags going to go through the roof again? I've got as many as I could possibly need, but should I buy another pallet of them?

For uppers and lowers I prefer CMT(Cross Machine and Tool) . All of their lowers and uppers are billet . They do not make any forged . They are also one of the few that make LH uppers and ambi lowers . I also recommend a quality barrel . Cheaper barrels wear out quicker . Also buy a barrel chambered in 223 Wylde . You can run 5.56 or 223 ammo with no problems . If you just want plinking a 1:9 twist is fine for 55grn bullets . If you want long range accuracy a 1:8 or a 1:7.5 for heavier bullets . For long range I would start with a 18" barrel .

It's been ten years or more since I purchased my ARs. My kids are wanting to buy a couple and I honestly don't know what the gun world looks like these days. I'm really not looking to go down a rabbit hole- can I get the cliff notes on what the goods are? Nothing too crazy but still a good quality workhorse with decent glass. Do Eotechs still suck or did that get worked out? Best place online to shop? Best local retailer you trust in Havasu?
My only advice is don't go and spend 5k on a AR platform when shooting 5.56 or .223. Definitely do get a barrel that is milled for either 5.56 or .223, and not just .223. These are so popular and mainstream now that I believe the majority of issues related to them are far more builder issue than user, meaning home built bench build vs complete out the box. You also need to decide on barrel length depending on the type of shooting you are trying to do. Not a real big deal, just more functional IMO (My intended use is not about being a sniper for 100+yards shots)

I'm familiar with M&P's, FN's, Colts and a few other off brands. With exception to a few different triggers (Feel and Function) you can't really tell the difference. There is s ton of nice "furniture" out there and that might actually be the biggest difference in how they/you think a rifle functions just based on how comfortable it is to shoot.

For Optics we use a simple Aimpoint red dot (non amplified) that "co-sights" with our basic irons. Nothing fancy and they get the job done. You can easily spend more on nice optics than the entire cost of the rifle so that really comes down to what you want to do with it.

I would not spend a bunch of money on an AR platform. I've built 2 they are very easy to assemble but you're not going to save any money on the diy route unless you have time to wait for killer deals to come around.

S&W, Ruger make good quality bare bones AR's that are reliable and accurate. There are other entry level makers too... Off the top of my head and I'm on coffee cup #1.

EoTech are GTG, a lot of people are running the Holosun and save some bucks

I have this one on an M4, cost more than more AR15's but it's really nice. The 4X magnifier is clear as can be and positively flips in and out of view in a fraction of a second.

Not bashing Palmertto but I would go with Aero if you are going to build a kit. The prices are only slightly higher but I feel they make a better product. If you are going to buy a rifle, Daniel Defense is hard to beat.

Either buy something in the 6-900$ range off a shelf or find a lower and build yourself. Imho when you build yourself it really assists in creating the knowledge how to properly clean and repair any issue. I’d rather build an AR “platform” gun than go out shooting myself.

Classic firearms had them for $7.99 on sale a bit ago. Plus shipping of course.

This is the norm!
A lot of good options in the $6-900 range

My Springfield Saint was $1200 but it was a Ca model. A good quality trigger is $250-500 so you need to look at budget and avoid the rabbit HOLE!

It also depends on usage.

If your just out plinking nothing wrong with entry level

My first question would be what is the price range they want to stay within?

I wouldn’t recommend building their first one. If build you mean buying a complete upper and complete lower then that is fine. That is not “building a gun BTW”.

I have had friends and family due a true build, and there is always issues that need to be worked out. For a first time builder they might not know what the issues are or how to fix them. They could expose them selves to some real danger.

I went with an LWRC IC DI. I was between that and Daniel Defense. LWRC is built more like a Porsche, very refined. DD is built like a tank.

What I have learned about buying tools I apply to guns . Don’t cheap out. It about longevity and durability. You want something that will always work but you don’t need to break the bank. IMO below is my piece.

I have an AR-10 I built a long time ago but needs some glass. I heard you can't just mount anything on there as the recoil will ruin them. Or is that just gun shop sales talk?

If you're in California I like the Juggernaut platform and the pins they make.

In my experience it’s true about the glass. I bought a cheap sight for one of my 5.56 rifles and the glass was fine, it was more of the mounting hardware that will be the issue.

For the price I think it will be hard to beat a smith and Wesson m&p sport 2.

They just work and are pretty dang good for the money.

I have a couple that I have built and they work good as well and cost more and are fancier.

I think my favorite is a ar9 I built but it’s a lot more picky on ammo and the way it’s run. Basically I love it but wouldn’t trust my life to it.

The box stock stuff is what I would probably grab if shtf.

Daniel defense,etc

Evo scorpion are pretty fun as well.

My go to LPK is the RRA NM 2 stage LPK, yu don't end up buying a hammer and sear for your parts drawer and the RRA is not the best trigger but it is light-years better than the milspec.

Right, what’s the fun, learn to install those take down pins without screaming 22 times the first time you do them.
I remember building my first one and I had a sense of accomplishment once I was done. It's not hard to do by any means, but kind of a neat feeling.

I love when people buy a complete lower, then buy a different brand complete upper, slap them together and talk about how they “built” their gun…lol
AR's are assembled ... like legos. The spec for barrel nut torque is 30-80Ft/lbs for god's sake. most the parts you just snap together with your fingers.

AK's are built, forged, welded, pressed and beaten into completion with blood, sweat and tears.

If I was only going to have one it would be a SCAR 16s with a Trijicon optic. They work very well suppressed and are a great all around weapon.

That was Eugene Stoner's genius. The gun is very well designed so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to assemble every single part, spring, pin, detent, nut, etc. 👍

I like that type of setup. One that fell in the lake had a “Romeo & Juliet” on it. Although, off the top of my head it’s a 3x not 4x. That one is, I mean was, set up at 100 yards or under.

I’ve built 600$ AR and I have 5k AR that is under 4lbs fully equipped. The 600$ ones shoot just as good as my 5k one. My go to is my first build. Shoots anything and is accurate as hell 100-150 yards.

I’m in the process of building a AR10 (308)

My dads M&P rocks too. Accurate and very very reliable. Shoots anything too. Steel, aluminum, brass, case and loads too. That gun is one I would take into a zombi apocalypse

The Sportsman Warehouse or Cabella’s in Phoenix, usually have 15-25 ”AR” type stuff, to look at. Reasonable.

You can spend 3 hours in each place, and burn up a day shopping for a gun.

I think the background check took about 30-45 minutes. There‘s a bunch of other stuff to look at while you wait.

Phoenix also has a monthly gun shows, and you can quickly educate your self there. They sell just about everything to help customize an AR.

Buy a M&P Sport like mentioned earlier then start buying ammo. Don't spend all the money on a fancy model then have no funds left over for ammo.

I "had" a handful of AR's (AR15, AR10, ARPISTOL, AR9mm, AR12ga, etc)....all of them were bought complete....I have completely disassembled most of them and reassembled them just to better understand how they work...pretty simple once you do it once...

That being said, I agree with has been said multiple times on here...my S&W M&P Sport has run flawless from the start...it was very affordable and it shoots anything you throw at it...it would be the one I grabbed if I was only able to grab one out of my safe...

Someone makes a really bitchin assembly tool for the front pin detent, they have them on Amazon, I have one, it works great. Like $10

I've always found driving the pin through the bolt catch to be the trickiest part of assembly, just because you don't want to scratch the lower

I used to keep spares and would drive that pin inside of a hefty bag…. So when it did go flying I’d be able to find it.

These days I’ve done enough of them I don’t have that problem, the trick is keeping consistent pressure on it.
