So, the MSM is reporting Trump wants to add Greenland to the US, as well as potentially Canada, and even the Panama Canal.

Is this a good idea? Isn't Canada full of democrat leaning liberals? If Greenland is important for resources, why not just a treaty or some sort of business deal between the US and Greenland?

Who pays for keeping the Panama Canal running, or maintaining it? Can't just be what it costs to transit the canal, do we have the money? Would we start blocking commerce just to fuck with people?

I'm not a fan of adding any of these to the US, there must be a better way of going about whatever Trump is after.

Thoughts?

Carter never should have relinquished control of the Canal. The Panama Canal would not exist without the United States, and we should have kept control after we finished building it.
I could see Panama, I just saw a report about the financial trouble they are in, apparently the canal needs some major infrastructure upgrades

Interestingly, the US negotiated the turnover of the Panama Canal back to Panama as Congress and the American people were tired of maintaining and protecting it coupled with it was due for a multi billion dollar upgrade.

Americans were tired of paying for it.

How things come around.

You have to think big picture. Why would we want a place like Greenland? The shipping lanes through the arctic are key. Especially the ones that may open up in the future. If Russia controls them we are royally screwed. The same goes with the Panama Canal. It’s a long term plan. And no, they wouldn’t become states. They would be territories. Additionally, Greenland is not a sovereign nation in being a territory of Denmark. Funniest part is Canada. Those Gypsy’s still fall under the English monarchy.

x10 on the US should never have relinquished control of the canal, but I’m concerned that to preserve access for our Navy, we make needed repairs and upgrades then some leftist President give it away again. Tough call for Trump unless we can permanently rescind the relinquishment.

Trump is just talking shit to get some leverage for something. He’s positioning himself. Just like he does with Tariffs. Bargaining chips.
He’s a businessman

I’ll try to remember everything Trump said in his speech and in response to reporters’ questions today;
Buy Greenland, because it is strategically important to the world, not just the U.S.
Tariffs on Canada
Tariffs on Mexico
Rename the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America
Repossess the Panama Canal. China is running it. Panama has violated the agreement under which it was transferred.
Return hostages by Jan. 20th, or all hell will break loose in the M.E., and Hamas will regret it
We’re gonna drill
Fuck wind power (ok, he didn’t say it like that)
Demand more from NATO. We’re protected by oceans and they’re not, so why should we pay for their protection?

It was great. Without a doubt, much of it is just establishing a negotiation stance, but if I was one of the guys on the other side, I wouldn’t want to write off anything he said. Did I miss anything?

Monroe Doctrine

Monroe did it

Teddy did it

Kennedy did it

Trump should do it!

The way the world is going I say do it…

Take Panama by force…fuck em…boot to throat.

Yes, take Greenland.

Canada, do as we say or you get nothing…once it starts to fall apart we take that too.

Make them territories so they don’t get a vote.

Shouldn’t have stopped at the west coast and just took the entire western hemisphere.

China and Russia would have done it a 100 years ago if they had the chance.

Maybe Trump wants to restart the Project Iceworm in Greenland the US started way back during the Cold War in the 50's.
Both China and Russia is also keen putting their finger on that strategic Island. The Danes wanted to expand into Canadian territories in the past. Last I've heard Chineese are running the Panama Canal, what could be more wrong about that?
The Whisky War, also known as the Liquor Wars, was a bloodless war and border dispute between the Kingdom of Denmark and Canada over Hans Island. Between 1973 and 2022, the island was under dispute between the two nations, although never amounting to direct conflict or violence. You can't make this shit up. LOL
Such a small country like Denmark sure have guts, having a female prime minister. She may have bigger balls than Trudeau, telling Trump, Greenland is not for sale. 🤣

A reporter yesterday on the radio said they published a list of 100 Trump campaign promises that he made during the race.
Hopefully they do progress reports every 12 months!

I'd love to see the media implode if Trump trolled them and said we're going occupy the Sudetenland.

There are 30 million US citizens without health insurance and a whole bunch more that cannot afford their co-insurance and deductibles.

Free healthcare in Canada would certainly be a selling point to many Americans to take it on as a 51st state.

I’d bet many US voters would consider moving to the new 51st state where healthcare is free. 🤷‍♂️

Trump doing what he does.
Saying stuff that is making people look one direction, while he uses some leverage to get what he wants.
Nothing is getting renamed, we are not expanding into Canada and Greenland, BUT we will end up with better trade agreements with Mexico, Canada and Greenland

The healthcare is not free in Canada. They are taxed directly and indirectly to fund it. Also the availability of the care is far from good. 14weeks to see a specialist.

It’s not any better than our shit show.

I know a guy who's been waiting 2 years for surgery....he's skeptical that it will ever happen. At least they have assisted suicide for when you get tired of waiting.

I love Trump. But . . . his rhetoric is already getting out of hand, just like last term.
He needs to talk less and think his communications thru before putting shit out there.
Are you really gonna come out before your even in office and just say your renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America? Lol
And I don't think any of us want to be closer to Canadians 😂

Yeah, but the Canadians who are being taxed to pay those healthcare costs for everyone else, and making their giant house payments, would realize they could move to one of the other 50 states and get a nice financial bump. No free healthcare anymore.

Yes, the complexities of these ruminations are somewhat challenging.

I have no doubt that, with regard to these issues, Trump has given some thought to his approach and is saying exactly what he believes he needs to say. In other words, he isn’t just spewing. Rename the gulf? Certainly unlikely, but he’s either making a point with regard to his negotiations with Mexico, or mis-directing for good reason.

I’m not saying he’s right about everything, but I respect his efforts to destroy the status quo when he believes it’s the wrong path.

Kind of off topic but somebody mentioned wind power. Had to laugh after coming back through whitewater and the wind machines up there. California thought they had a bunch and Texas said “hold my beer” by Amarillo.

My wife and son both, had to wait over 52 weeks for surgery for their ongoing sinus /polip issues by a competent specialist in Burnaby. Sometime , it takes even two years to see Dr Menari, the only surgeon with an excellent reputation in Vancouver. Our problem here in BC is, the shortage of doctors. We have moved to the Okanagan in 2016, waited almost 6 yrs to find a doctor who could take us.
There was an exodus of nurses from BC a while ago, moving to the US, getting better paid. Population in Canada grown to 40 million, while many doctors retired in the last decade, not enough replacement to fill the void. Nurses were replaced mostly by immigrant asians that I've seen everywhere. Without those, we'd be fucked. Friend of mine died at 43 about 27 yrs ago, waiting for heart transplant, was on the waitng list. He was two weeks from getting it.

I talk to Canadians all the time with similar stories. Most are looking to go to other countries (mostly the USA) to get care.

Since we are on the subject of healthcare, I need an ankle replacement surgery. It’s about $150,000 in the US. I can get that same surgery with a higher level of care for about $15,000 in Thailand.

Canadians also looking for dental service in Mexico/south America. No dental health coverage in Canada. Friend had a major issue with his teeth. You have to pay out of your pocket for dental here, unless still working for a good company with benefits. He immigrated fron Venezuela 30 some yrs ago. He was quoted $50k for total implants, this was about 16 yrs ago. He went to visit his sister in Venzuela and had the implants done for $15k there.

haven't been back in Hungary since 1989, many of my Hungarian friends travel there for dental work, same deal.
They tell me that the dental services they went to, have state of the art equipment and facility. I'm kinda disappointed the way Canada changed since the time I've come here. Our liberal politicians don't help either. I hope, after that turd Trudeau is gone, immigration will slow down a bit and start fixing the country.
Dave, wife broke her ankle in 3 pieces 8 yrs ago. It required 3 titanium rods to put in. So far she's good no problems. I remember your scenario some doctors fucked you up. You really have to know who to go to. Sorry you have to go trough it again.
