...I am still in shock... but my close friend of many years John Moon Martin the singer song writer has passed away... He would’ve been the last person I would’ve expected to do an early check out... he never smoked cigarettes he never smoked pot ...didn’t do drugs he had been two credits away from being a pharmacist after attending Oklahoma university...He died of lung cancer which I suppose he had been exposed to so much secondhand smoke from night clubs and the recording studio... As back in the day you could smoke anywhere you wanted... Partially what’s hard to believe he was over at my house about eight weeks ago and he looked great but when I talked to him on the phone a week and a half ago I said John you sound horrible he said I just woke up...well it was three in the afternoon and may be in the old days when we were younger musicians would get up at two or three in the afternoon but ‘m pretty sure he had become an early riser....John had become quite a reclusive Scorpio and I was the only one from the old days who he was still much in contact with...He had been working on his next album for possibly the last seven or eight years... some of it with horns some of it with full orchestration... He picked up my guitar about a year ago and played me two of the songs from the album and they were just superb one of the songs was far better than anything he had ever written...
... The Oklahoma historical society is trying to locate his brother Sonny who I am assuming still lives in Oklahoma as they want to do an interview with he and Dr. Erik Dalton who was the drummer on a lot of Moons early work...So if any of you folks in Oklahoma have a clue as to how I can get a hold of Sonny Martin please let me know...Thanks...

Sorry to hear this, Willie. He was from Altus in SW OK. Here is a Oklahoma report. Sorry for the long read inmates, thought Willie might want to read. Sorry the photos didn't copy.

Instead of observing a moment of silence for Moon Martin, how about turning up the radio as loud as it will go the next time you hear a certain song.

An Oklahoma music artist, Martin wrote the song “Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor).” You know how it goes: Doctor, doctor, give me the news...

Sad news: Martin is no longer with us. He died May 11. Martin would’ve turned 70 next Halloween, an ideal birthday for someone nicknamed Moon.

John David “Moon” Martin was born in Altus and grew up to become a music artist and songwriter. He morphed from John Martin to “Moon” Martin so he wouldn’t be mistaken for British singer-songwriter John Martyn and because he continually dropped moon references in lyrics.

Full moon? Full life.

Martin dated Linda Ronstadt. Maybe he could’ve been an Eagle. He had a music career all his own, recording five albums on the Capitol label. And he penned a song that isn’t going away. It’s probably playing on a classic rock station right now.

Martin wrote and recorded “Bad Case of Loving You” for his “Shots From a Cold Nightmare” album in 1978. One of the album’s tracks, “Cadillac Walk,” was covered by Mink DeVille. A more impactful cover, “Bad Case of Loving You,” was tackled by British music artist Robert Palmer.

According to music lore, Palmer was on the way to a gig when someone played him Martin’s stuff. Bazinga. Palmer immediately added “Bad Case of Loving You” to his set list, and he recorded it for his 1979 album, “Secrets.”

Peaking at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, “Bad Case of Loving You” was Palmer’s biggest hit until the MTV era, when he cracked the top 10 with a couple of Power Station songs and the solo smashes “Addicted to Love,” “I Didn’t Mean to Turn You On” and “Simply Irresistible.”

When you write a song like “Bad Case of Loving You,” checks keep finding their way to your mailbox. Martin cut deals with Dr Pepper and Dr. Scholl’s for the use of the song, according to Tulsa music artist Steve Allen of the band 20/20.

“He never really had to work again after that song,” Allen said.

“That’s back in the days when if you had a hit song internationally, it brought money to you every quarter. It kind of funded the rest of his life, and he could buy all of his gear and do whatever he wanted, really.”

Martin didn’t stop recording or performing after Palmer struck gold with the song. Allen backed Martin during a tour of France in 1992. France? Moreso than the U.S., Europe had a bad case of loving Martin. Information from a 1981 recording of a concert at Rockpalast in Hamburg, Germany, said Martin was once described by author Johnny Rogan as a cross between Buddy Holly, Warren Zevon and John Denver. A recent Facebook post from the Oklahoma Museum of Popular Culture (OKPOP) referred to Martin as one of the most critically acclaimed power pop artists of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.

If you want to hear Martin’s story straight from the source, there’s a 33-minute Rayman TV interview of him that can be accessed on YouTube. Martin talks about growing up near the Red River and how he got hooked on music. He talks about his first band, The Disciples (formed in Norman when he was at the University of Oklahoma), and watching Jimi Hendrix perform live at a festival in California. The Disciples became the country-rock band Southwind.

In the YouTube interview, Martin tells a story about performing with Ronstadt and playing with Don Henley and Glenn Frey before they formed the Eagles. Martin played with them because another future Eagle, Bernie Leadon, had a gig somewhere else. Martin, asked if he was interested in joining their group, said no because he wanted to be true to his “boys from Oklahoma.” Southwind split up shortly afterward.

“I wouldn’t have been right for that band anyway,” Martin said in the video. “Bernie was a much better player than I was.”

With Southwind or when fronting his own band, Martin shared stages with acts like the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Cheap Trick and Joe Jackson. In the video, he told a story about being splattered with an orange (he said it looked like he had a starfish on his head) when his band’s material wasn’t to the liking of fans waiting to see Pat Travers.

More importantly, Palmer liked Martin so much that he asked to meet him after embracing “Bad Case of Loving You.” Palmer included other Martin songs on his set lists and produced Martin’s 1982 album, “Mystery Ticket.”

Asked about Palmer’s cover of “Bad Case of Loving You” during a 2000 interview with Ron Balliet, Martin said, “At that time, it was very difficult for a rock record to do well. Even Pat Benatar was having trouble cracking the Top 20. Some people were saying that ‘Bad Case Of Loving You’ is the song that brought rock back to the charts. Because, at that time, you had Fleetwood Mac, which I really like, but it’s not rock. And you had Rupert Holmes with Pina Colada, things like that.”

Martin’s version of “Bad Case of Loving You” (“I thought it was really great,” Allen said.) was not released as a single in the U.S. by his record label. Martin endorsed the decision. He charted two songs (“Rolene,” “No Chance”) in 1979 and became a New Wave darling.

Allen first met Martin around 1980. Allen said Martin was a lifelong music lover who followed his passion and followed his dream and just never stopped doing it.

“He was just a fascinating, unique guy,” Allen said. “He lived life in his own way is how I looked at it. You would not hear from him and then you would hear from him. He was just kind of reclusive that way.”

Let’s close with one more statement from Allen, who said this: “I just was honored to have worked with him and I think he was an exceptional songwriter. He was just a great human being

I remember the area. I believe that Johnny, Susan and I drove down to Carlsbad Ca and spent the day watching a US Grand Prix motorcycle race. Sorry I don’t remember meeting you however I do remember that after the race we stopped at a restaurant and had a bucket of large neck steamed clams. I took a lot of trips and of course Susan attended the funeral of my father in 1978. Johnny and I spent a lot of time in the 80’s fishing in Yellowstone during the summers. Good times good memories.

...It was just a brief introduction to you from John ...I think I had walked across the alley and you and your family were just walkicing into his house???...You would probably remember my dog more than me .:.the Large brown half St. Bernard half Newfoundland...lol...
...I think the last time I talked to Susan would’ve been the mid 90s she had just happened to call John at his Sherman Oaks house while I was there...

After I moved to Long Beach, I never saw Susan again and the last I heard she was no longer in the publishing business. Brother John and I had some adventures during the 80’s and 90’s and then during the early 2000 years he got busy and so did I but we had a lot in common and talked every day. Going to miss him.

...Yeah I’m going to really miss him too...

...I am going to make an assumption here that you have hooked up with the good Doctor Erik Dalton???...
...As I was trying to get a location on you for Dalton...It ocured to me that the last person that I knew that had been in contact with you was Cecilia Price(her brother Jim played with The Rolling Stones for 5 years)....this was when she was with Kinross Holt...if I remember correctly you had been working on some architectural renderings to add a house to the side of her barn where the show horses were kept???...
...Well in speaking with her husband apparently Cecilia passed away 3 1/2 years ago... Not sure if you were aware of this???...another really good person Is gone...

Hey Sonny! I’m alive and well, living in Austin. I had asked Joanne if she had contact info for you when Johnny passed, but not sure she did at the time. Hope you’re doing well. I still miss him so very much.

Unfortunately he hasn't been on here since he made that post so I don't know if he will see this and I don't think either of you are able to PM. Maybe @Willie B has a contact number.

Hey Willie B! No idea how I ended up on this forum…I was searching for a thread I’d seen before where friends of Johnny’s were posting memories. Somehow your name popped up on this place and I was so happy to find you. Would love to talk. And I was trying to remember your dog‘s name this morning,,,,it was Danny, right? I loved how you used to leave the giant big of kibble open so he could stick his head in and eat when he wanted. The perfect low maintenance dog.

Haha! Well done…I WAS Mokie! Good memory! Are you in touch with Joanne these days? She has my number if you want to talk. I have so many questions about Johnny’s last couple of years. We were in touch until he found out about his tumor and I think he just didn’t want anyone to know. I‘d love to talk! How many years ago did we have Danny and Mokie!? Hmmm…maybe better not to add it up 🙂

My goodness, I was doing the SAME THING! I still talk to him. I asked him once if he was really listening, then send me a sign….like a blue bird of some kind. I hadn’t seen any bluejays around my house for at least two years or more …and sure enough a couple days later I hear a VERY loud bluejay squawking high up in a tree. I guess that bird wanted to let me know he was there in case I didn’t look up. I feel very strongly that he’s keeping tabs on us! Great forum so far,..and yes, thanks to 4 Waters for the guidance. Now if someone can just tell me which keno numbers to pick when I get to Vegas…. 🙂

… Susan, this is all bringing tears to my eyes… I guess I’m just a wuss after all🤷🏽‍♀️… some people think that Bluejay stuff is hocus-pocus… I have seen firsthand where it is not… Quite a few years ago neighbor girl, Krystal✨‘s boyfriend at the time… passed away… That was eight or nine years ago… Krystal✨ is the daughter I never had… I am 78 and she is 29… We have been best friends… Thick as thieves for 20 years… anyway when her boyfriend passed away, all of a sudden a Bluejay started appearing pretty close to her bedroom … That went on for quite some time… We would monitor the birds activity daily…Occasionally, it would go out and sit on some wires on a telephone pole out by the street… She was devastated and did quite a bit of research on the Bluejay thing and… Yes, indeed it is the real deal…

… And by the way, I just sent a fairly lengthy text to Joanie asking her for your phone number… so we will see how that goes… the last communication I had had with her looks like it was sometime last January???…
… Keep posting… young lady… This is good… And trust me, the forum members are enjoying it👍

The bluejay thing IS real. I’ve heard sooo many stories of birds coming around doing strange things after someone passes. I just texted Joanie as well, so hopefully we’ll talk soon. And thank all of you for having this forum so that people can connect and pass along useful information. More connection can only be a good thing these days. 👍🏻

My Father fished across the street from the dealership all the time. After he passed an Eagle kept coming and landing in the Pine Tree across the river from where he fished. I told my wife it was him coming back to check on us. We are a small town, but the Eagles continue to land in that tree right downtown. It flew right down the middle of the road last week. I never manage to get a good picture. It is a pretty crazy site to see that 6ft wingspan in front of the showroom windows.
I love that! I do believe our loved ones are watching over us from the other side. 100 percent.

… Her reply… unless you started before the party???…lol… oh yes, the good old days👍

…Now is the time of night… 8 PM here where I go out in my driveway and go into my 26 foot long, travel trailer and lay around pretending I’m on vacation…
… The real truth of the matter is… I don’t know if you ever met… But for sure you would’ve had to of heard stories about Michael Ziebarth… Sometimes known as Dr. Bizzare… Sometimes known as XY Ziebarth… He and Ed Nett were the Roadies of Johnny’s band Southwind… anyway he hooked up with his high school sweetheart, which lasted a few years… But she was my really good friend and developed a major health scare several years ago… So I would go out to my trailer every night and send her a message and a prayer… I know nothing about sending a prayer… But I tried …
… Some months later, I actually got a reply from her that she was OK and had survived the health scare deal…
… For some reason I still go out to the trailer every night for a couple of hours???… maybe because I can???…

… Moving on… What is too late to call you in Austin???…

wrote the songs "Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor)", made famous by the Englishsinger Robert Palmer, and "Cadillac Walk", made famous by the American singer Willy

I see Cadillac Walk as one of his songs. I’ve listened to Cub Coda sing that song several times. Is it the same song?
… The first version of Cadillac Walk, by an artist, other than John Moon Martin would have been Willy Deville of Mink Deville… a very outrageous version… Willy was simply a bad ass …Moon shared many a story about Willy and his girlfriend Toots… what a pair😳

… I had never heard the version of Cadillac Walk by Cub Coda… here it is

…Here is a John Moon Martin version of Cadillac Walk…

… I had forgotten about this one by the Canned Heat… I knew it was out there I just simply forgot🤷🏽‍♀️

oh yes…I’ve heard MANY amusing/whacky stories of both Michael Ziebarth and Ed Nett! When we weren’t on the road or in the studio we spent a great deal of time fishing or driving to and from fishing so there was loads of time for old Southwind stories (and oh how I miss all that time in the boat!) I love that you have a 26 foot travel trailer! A couple of years after we broke up, and while waiting for my apartment to be ready I stayed in Johnny’s camper in his driveway in Sherman Oaks. It was just awesome! He had taken it off of his truck and we hooked up water and electricity from the house. I slept like a baby in that thing and ended up being there about 2 months. I loved that camper! It was a place of solace, so I get why you love yours so much. And a perfect place to send healing prayers from. Maybe there’s no right or wrong way to send a prayer? Maybe it’s just the kind hearted intention that counts. (I know who to come to now if I have a health scare 🙂) I’m an early riser these days, so my phone is usually off by 9:30 at night. Looking forward to talking.

Yes, we spent some time with Willie and Toots. what a pair indeed! Toots was the only woman I’ve ever met who had tattooed her lips red. No need for lipstick. Somewhere in there I can see the logic.
