They were a great ride until you held that piece of coke can (custom kill switch) down across the spark plug to shut it off and forgot you weren't wearing gloves.

I remember the day I got mine, my parents had to pry me off it. Those damn things would shake the fillings out of your teeth, the good ol' days.

Oh hell yes.
As a matter of fact I did a search the other day for "Taco Mini Bikes" and was sent on a trip through memory lane.
Apparently you can still buy them.
I am trying to figure out how to approach the wife on why a 52 year old guy wants either a mini bike or a Honda mini Trail.

Just buy and bring it home, and say "hey look what I did"
Always easier to ask forgiveness than permission.

As for the mini bike, I got one for my 5th B-day, less engine.
My older brother had done a good job of about killing every neighborhood kid with his.
To get me to quit whining for one, and giving in to my mom, my dad bought the neighbors old frame with wheels. I rode it like a scooter, and still thought I was Evil Knievel!

Riding one of those[at agout 10yrs old] resulted in the first of many visits to my house by local law enforcement to talk to my parents about my actions:D

I got my first motorcycle at 8 years old. It was a 1974 YZ 80. My dad bought it from Mickey Dymond's dad. We put a get-kit on it from Fairway Yamaha and it was stupid fast for an 8 year old!!! We should have put that motor on a Thai hydro long boat!!!!

My kids started riding dirt bikes at about 5. Currently, my 7 year old rides an XR 50 and my 9 year old rides an XR 70.

I grew up on east 46th st. in north L.B.
I had a junkyard-resto'd who-knows-what-frame with a 3.5 hp tecumseh engine I got from a gardner that worked the neighborhood, I had to scrounge a carb off a Briggs 5 Hp to get it to run, but it hauled ass.
My bestest buddy Carl had a fresh Taco 22, right from Grants, with a 3 Hp Briggs.
We terrorized every alley, street and schoolground there was with those things, only got chased by LBPD once, when they had the audacity to pull through the Jack in the box drive through while we were parked there eating a burger.
perhaps it was our audacity to get on them and fire them up and take off down Orange Avenue that caused them to chase us.
We were, about 11-12, I think. and no they never caught us, we laid low and got out the Sting Rays for awhile til the heat was off.
Man what memories.
Wish I knew where Carl was...

I stopped to get gas not to long ago and two kids came blasting out of the alley, pulled up to the pump, topped off with a 1/2gal each and took off.

I'm sure they were wondering about the old fuk staring at them with a shit eating grin on his face.:D

Yup, I had one also. I traded my BMX for it. Did my paper route
on it too, lol! The Ventura County Sheriff's Deputy didn't like that.
At least I had a job to pay the fine. What a blast!!

I was not allowed to ride any sort of moto bike until I was 18. My mom thought it was one of those " you will shoot your eye out kid" type things.. :thumbsdown

I vowed not to same that same mistake with my kids. :skull :thumbsup

That was what I learned how to shift on! (yeah really hard I know) I dont remember how old, I was still in elementary, and all my buddies were on YZ and RM 80s, and I had that 50 and we were out at El Mirage. They went tearing across the desert, and left me in their dust. Not being there before, I headed back to camp before I got too lost, and screwed around on the little motocross track we had set up.
My buddies step dad didnt ride much, even though he had a bike. So he put me on his bike, and taught me how to use the clutch to get going, and shift and down shift. After a few minutes of that, he told me to go out and ride on the lake bed with my buddies. I can still remember the look on their faces, them thinking they dusted me on that little 50, and then I'm out there on a YZ 465! Good times!

There was a dump down the street from my house. Im ridin around in it, and a siren goes off behind me!!!

I look over my sholder, and there is a cop on a harley following me! So being the good boy i was, i headed for a trail i knew he wouldnt fit down. Its a down hill trail, gets narrower the furtherer you go. I remember looking behind me, and seeing the cop falling off his harley sideways, cause he couldnt fit where i was going.

(can you imagine how he was gonna explain him needing help to get his harley back up that trail to the watch comander???) Man that musta sucked!!!

It was at least a month before i went back to ride at the dump. :D

My lust-after bike, which hit after the mini's and right before hot rods set their lifelong hook was an SL 70 honda.
Now, if I find one of those in restoreable condition...
