Freedom is never free! The Pearl Harbor Memorial is very sobering and a must see if in Hawaii. Thank you to all the servicemen who gave all to protect our freedoms we enjoy today.
I watched the Midway remake last night, which of course starts with Pearl Harbor, and didn’t even give the date a thought. We owe a great deal to the brave men of The Greatest Generation.
My father was a Staff Sergeant with the Corps of Engineers in Italy and Africa, building airfields, hangars, etc. He received the Legion of Merit Medal for his leadership related to the nine-day construction of a base that was used to launch attacks destroying a major German fuel source in Africa, which contributed to stopping their advance.
He died in 1992, and I only learned this about two months ago, as he wouldn’t discuss his activities in the war. When I was a kid and asked him about it, all he said was “I was just a Staff Sergeant”.
EDIT: Well, his discharge document says he received the Legion of Merit, but i just found an online listing for what is claimed to be a listing of all recipients, and he’s not on it. I’m not sure about it now, but that doesnt change anything about him as far as I care.
