I have an opportunity to get my hands on a 99 Cougar MTR. It’s set up for an outboard, but needs a motor (which I also have access to) and some serious gel TLC. It’s been verified as Canadian built.

I’m new to the high performance word. My hang up is I’ve never been in one and have no first hand experience how they handle. How do they stack up against other 21’ boats? How are their manners? Any handling insight I can would be much appreciated.

‘War Canoe’ over at ‘The Outboard Church’ on this site is the 21’ MTR guru. Post this over there, I’m sure he’ll respond. I’ll tell ya what I know tomorrow.

It will handle fine if the set up is right. Check the transom, What engine are you planning ?

Family friends had an MTR built in Canada. Nice boat, but I only rode in it and that was 25 years ago.

I'm the dad. She's my daughter. I own the boat and motor. Father/ Daughter project. Anyone have advice on the 250 Pro XS motor. She's got a hydrostream Vegas XT but I worry about the hull design. Those things can go sideways real fast. Great hull but shit can go wrong real fast. I like the the cat design for safety and know the Cougars are rock solid.

Wow. I’m super jealous. Looks like a great day out. You obviously get lots of seat time.

Seems like the Hot Boat issues indicated these came stock with a hydraulic jack plate. Does yours have one? Either way, is that something I should invest in?

I’m planning on a Merc 250 Pro XS.
It well handle fine with that, when you set it up Keep the motor a little low, Nose cone 3 inches under the transom bottom, It will run slower and not be able to air out as
much giving you seat time and can even make some mistakes driving and still have control. The less setback also gives you a more stable boat. More speed 12 inch
setback Nose cone level with boat bottom [raised] .....
