Idiots.

Of course kids at Princeton would be happy making $75K, when they make $0 now with everything paid for while going to school :)

I would actuall agree. California and 95K is about right. I would be happy with a single income of 95K if benifits were on top.

I’m under 95k plus benefits. Wife don’t work. Nice truck paid for decent car paid for. Small mortgage compared to most.
We easily afford to go 2 1week vacations a year and I go on a 1 week hunting trip each year.

And we still manage to put money in our and our 3 kids savings account.

My 8yr old has more money than most adults lol.

The Mortgage is the kicker. You can't buy a house within 10-20 miles of the coast in a half decent area for less than $600K...which is $3000/month if you come in with a healthy deposit. That doesn't leave much for gas/food/beer/anything else if you have a family of 3 and a wife that doesn't work. If you bought a while ago and have a reasonable mortgage payment...95K is enough. But not if you're looking to buy a house now.

It all depends on if you need to keep up with the Jones's. If so that number grows significantly. On the other hand that includes most (but not all) of California.

That’s easy to fix, don’t buy a house near the coast lol.

It’s not what you make that matters. It’s what you spend...

I laugh at the kids at work. They bitch about wanting to make more money. But yet they go to farmer boys for lunch everyday and spend $10.
They look at me funny when I told them to knock it off and it would be like getting a $1hr raise lol.

$300K in CA is not poor. You can live very well in So Cal for $300K, just not on the water.

My wife and I make about half of that combined and live pretty dang good.....

I know people that make triple what we do and live for shit and have nothing in the bank. Depends on the people and the choices they make with the $$$.

IMO, that defeats the whole purpose of living in CA.

What do you define as being close to the beach...lol??

I don't surf and prefer the lake/river to over crowded no parking hazy marine layer days down at the beach.

Tons of nice places to live in California not on the coast....15 miles inland isn't the coast

Im under that too but when wife was working we bought the boat and other things which are now paid off.I do get OT often and side job here and there which pays for the playing. Also decided to buy our house in fullerton in 2000 when they were only 190k.No way i could afford to buy a new house or the things we have now.Back then our friends were more worried about going out every weekend spending money and driving nice new cars but now bitch about the price of a home.

It all depends on the person,

Do they have to do Starbucks, lunch out every day? Some people always want more and work for it, that’s good but then some people want more because other people have it and don’t want to work more and that’s bad.

More work = good
Less work = bad

95k a year isn't enough money today, to start off in California. Unless you can stay home with the parents for a few years rent free and save for a down payment.

I don't even think a decent house under 500k can be had right now in Cali. That's 100k down, with 2600 a month or so mortgage payment. After taxes, you are probably taking home 6-7k? That's a stretch. Half of that to your mortgage or rent, health care, cars, food. Maybe a netflix monthly subscription and cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

That's what I was thinking. Well at least to live in a decent area. I heard Adelanto or San Bernadino was nice this time of the year. :D

My buddy is trying to buy right now, 1st time buyer and the down payment assistance he makes like $78,000 next bump will put him over the limit to quality for the program. He is looking $420-$450,000.00

No offense to your friend but how will he buy a home in the mid 400s making under 80k? Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. 6500 a month= take home of what 5100 or less? Mortage not including taxes and fees on a 425k home is about 2k right? So figure just the home with taxes, utilities, insurance etc will cost close or at 3000. He has 2k left for vehicle, gas, food and everything else. How about if that house needs a new AC unit or stucco on month. He would be in the hole. Ugh.

What area can you get something decent in Cali for the mid 400s?

Maybe I live too high on the hog, but 2k to pay all my bills and still have a high quality of life would be a stretch. Definitely one of the reasons I left California. I don't understand the need to stick out that rat race with millions and millions of other folks.

$95,000/year for "happiness" - sure if you're a 2 income household and you're both making $95K.

Median home price in OC is $715,000. 20% of that for down payment is $143,000 - how long will it take someone making $95,000 to save $143,000?!

Moving inland is one answer to staying in OC. The median home value in San Bernardino County is $336,300 so your 20% downpayment would be "only" $67,000

You guys crack me up.

Guess I can make it because my mortgage is only $1200 month.

2179sq ft built in 2005 1/4 acre

I don’t live in some high class laguana hills type area but.

I choose to live within my means by a large margin.

I’m Savin now and when the market crashes maybe I can buy up a social class or 2 lol

You can buy out here in the dirt (Winchester) for around that price but you aren't going to have a yard and be right on top of your neighbors!

I honestly believe both sides of this argument. 95K is more than enough to be happy to someone who lives in a 400K house, drives a 5 year old paid off car, and is frugal. 95K is not even close to enough for someone who needs/wants more to be happy. I have survived on way less than 95K during the market down turn and have over doubled it. I was happy both years. I love ribeye and love pasta too but for me it is more important who I eat with than what I eat.

Well said.

Before I met my wife she bought an average car, a small 3bed 2bath and remodeled it. While raising her daughter with no help from the Dad on $13hr.
It can be done just decide what’s most important.
The look at me possessions or providing for and spending time with those you care about.

15 miles inland is more "the coast" than Corona or Riverside. I'm 6 miles from the launch ramp at Marine Stadium....and as of tomorrow, I'll own a house with a bigass lot and a huge backyard (by city slicker standards)...so I'll take it. There is absolutely NFW I could have pulled this off had I not scooped into the market back in 2008 right after the crash. Otherwise I'd be in a different state

We're getting off topic.

95K is plenty if you want to own a home and were able to get into the real estate market back before things went completely stupid. 95K is nowhere near enough if you're attempting to buy your first home in SoCal in a reasonable area right now. It's all relative. The guy I just bought my new (to me) house from said his last payment was $151/month....and he wrote the last check 20 years ago. He pays property taxes on an assessed value of $84K. He could live comfortably on $30K/year. Most of the rest of us can't.

5-7 years ago when I was financially supporting my mom and three cousins, $95,000 was not enough in Sacramento. Yes I was living in a decent area but it still was still not that great. The grocery bill alone was nuts

I went to a seminar one time that said the breakover point of happiness was 75k (national avg). They also talked about statistically, people are happier with hs diplomas. Then happier yet again with a bachelors in a useful field. But at the masters level, happiness declines.

It was an interesting talk, especially because it was at a National Lab with an auditorium full of phd’s making twice of 75k.

you all are looking at this through filters. The price of homes you are kicking around is down in the heart of so-cal. There is a lot of California remaining. Stay out of the bay area and specific high end neighborhoods and you can still do reasonably well in the 2's and 3's. We all make our choices in life. You have to remember that a huge swath of people still live in apartments and such. You don't actually have to live in a stand alone house to be happy and comfortable. I spent last week in a rented unit four blocks east of the gas lamp district in San Diego on vacation with family. There were many happy people around (a lot of homeless and piss smell, but you get the point.) it was not for me long term but good for them. Many of these people survived happily without boats, toys and in many cases vehicles but that is their choice.

This is truth, like gold. If I ever have kids, I will of course let Charlie and the Chocolate factory show them that rotten and being poor is about what’s within not by your actual monetary worth but then show them also how credit works somehow and the system of educational debt before they hit middle school, for sure.

This kind of seems like a new thread topic: how do you guys teach your kids about money???
