Comms, no. Portable radio will work.

26 eliminator has run out with us to Catalina before ask @CanyonLakeDave he ran a 26 eliminator in the ocean a few times. Run over and back in the mornings and you’ll be fine.

Just went to Catalina last weekend in the flyer and now want to bring the 24 stealth over. Only thing stopping me is the open bow. Has anyone ever seen a snap on canvas cover for the bow. Basically covert to closed bow. Not expecting to keep white water off but the spray at least.

I WILL own another boat to do this in! I always intended to run the Spectre out there, but sold it before I made it happen.

I got under the Golden Gate with my own junk, that was a bucket list deal as well. Catalina is on the list too!

Was over there a couple of months aga and a Malibu ski boat was moored next to us he left a 6am and a Yahama roll bar boat took his mooring, WTF little crazy but early morning is usually easy going.

This looks like a great time!
I dropped my 25' Elminator Eagle in 1 time at the Channel Islands Marina after having several mimosas at brunch. A buddy of mine and I decided to go boating and went all the way out to the Channel Islands, and oil rigs. We had a great time until we had to come back, the weather changed drastically- it went from a clear sunny day with fairly smooth water to big swells with deep fog withing a matter of minutes. We were idiots, it was a total spur of the moment decision- no GPS, no radio, nothing other than a cooler of beer!! It was pretty sketchy coming back but was fun and something we still talk about.

The salt water ate the shit out of my trailer even after rinsing it really well. I would consider going out in the ocean again with a group of boats and a lift to drop my boat into the water but unfortuntly their isnt that option here in Ventura County.

Can’t tell you how many times we did that when I had the 24’ baja. No radio, no heading, no cell phones back then…just point and go. What could go wrong? 😂😂 plenty of time near ise long back in socked in fog following the swell to find the coast and make it to the harbor. 🤦‍♂️😁

It's easier to find the island going than what ever launch ramp you launched from coming back.

Well there sort of is. Biggest deal will your trailer let it be hoisted.
Channel Islands has a storage facility with a hoist. If you store your boat there you get x amounts of hoists a month. You can figure it out from there.

We over shot Santa Cruz once in heavy fog. Went right between Santa Cruz and San Miguel. Following swell back to the shore and then flowing coast to marina is way easier.

Man that sounds WAY too familiar. Don't ya miss those pucker up moments and boating, not.
I'll never forget being maybe 3 miles off Laguna and going down below with a Pleasure Unit to attend to matters... we came up for air 30 minutes later to total fog out! It came from nowhere real fast.... had to softly idle with swell until I got visability of PCH and gained my bearings, ha. Guess I needed to work faster down below but yaknow how that is.

This looks like such a great event, and it seems like it's growing every years. Nice job by the organizers to fill the gap for a socal ocean event now that scope is no more. I'd like to get out and do the run one of these years.

Disclaimer: This post is in no way directed at you necessarily but more the RDP community. No idea whats holding anyone back but from what I've read on here if you are based in AZ could be the salt vs fresh issue. Guys like Tank & Dan keep their boats gorgeous as can be and they ride salt & fresh.... looks like it can be done. We just saw Tanks Cig pics on his last ride and that thing looked bristol in & out. I won't spend too much time on this issue but only to say that taking a boat in the ocean has been maybe the single most exhilerating experience in my life in last 20 years. [Children before that era ha] The sensations you feel can't be compared to fresh water running albeit the top end speed fresh guys experience on flat glass fresh. If you've ever riden a warm blooded quarter horse or a dirt bike its kinda like that where all your senses are in full engagement. Then you get dolphins that actually want to ride at your helm and everyone on board gets to see them from 5 feet away as they literarily seem to want to play with you calling you into their pool. Countless times folks have jumped off my bow at 5-10 knots as I kill engines so they can witness one of natures greatest creatures up close as they click and sonar circling them from 10 feet. And don't even get me started on the whale experiences in fall and winter months. The first time I encountered a 80' blue whale in a 30' boat was a life changing event.

So fuck the trailer that gets a bit rusted and use our boats to the fullest extent of their capabilities I say.... I mean what are we keeping them so spotlessly clean for anyway?

I post this comment just cause I've truly enjoyed and benefitted from all you guys on RDP for several years now and I want each of you with boats to experience the joy as I have in the magnificent Pacific.

So come on out... the waters fine.

Greg probably has more ocean boat time than the vast majority of the people on this site. He was on the board of directors for SCOPE (So Cal Offshore Powerboat Elite) for many years at the height of the clubs run, meaning they were running a few times a month offshore for small events, lunch runs, harbor to harbor runs or fun runs to Catalina. I'm guessing he still has a fair amount of rust on that steel trailer under his Shockwave. LOL

I think his hold up with this event (like mine) is logistics and scheduling.

But I agree with your sentiment whole heartedly. Ocean running is a different animal. Completely different type of boating. I'd say it's more "true" boating, where you're out there really to boat. And you get out to Catalina or any of the other Channel Islands, it's like you're in a different world. Catalina (Avalon) always feels like I'm in the french or Italian riviera and the less populated Channel Islands I always feel really connected to nature and in awe that most have never seen such beautiful and majestic basically untouched islands. Almost surreal when you're out there. But I agree. If you have a boat that is even remotely seaworthy, people should take the plunge (no pun intended).

I've probably ocean boated over a hundred times and posted about it even more. 🤣

Definitely the most fun activity I've ever participated in. It is one of those things that can not be explained but has to be experienced.

That said, I'm afraid my ocean boating days are over. I sold my Formula this spring because I realized making the long tow from northern NV to SoCal harbors was just too much. I think SCOPE died because a lot of members moved away as well. Tom Whitham, Chris Greyson and I did a lot of runs out of Dana but eventually Tom sold "Hot For Teacher" and I sold my Baja and didn't get another boat for a while. I don't know if Chris still runs his or not.

So I think for many, it is a logistical issue. For others it may be lack of experience and not being familiar with the whole experience. I think some are afraid of salt as well. I have converted a few salt virgins over the years though.

I think the early 2000's was the hay day of it all though. I had some amazing times and a lot of photos to remember it. So even though it might be over for me, I'll always have great memories of the boating and the friends and good times.

I grew up ocean boating with my dad so that is what I knew before I really started going to the river. Definitely a more exciting boating experience but there is a lot more cleanup at the end of the day. An aluminum trailer makes it much better. The early 2000's when we had our Cigarette were great times. We sold the Top Gun in 2005 and downsized to a 28 Skater because we were mostly going to Havasu by then and the Gun was too big IMO. I picked the Skater up from Scott Conrad's dealership in Huntington Beach during his grand opening and there were a lot of SCOPE guys there. It seemed that a lot of them at that time were moving on from boats and getting more into cars. I miss our Gun and the runs we did up and down the coast and out to Catalina, but having a house in Havasu makes boating out there much easier than going out in the big blue.

I really miss running my boat in the ocean. It's just a different experience vs running in the lake. To me, lake boating is more social, where the boat is used to get to the destination. Ocean boating is more technical and really being on top of running the boat. Both types of boating are a lot of fun, just different.

The last time I ran my boat inthe ocean was pulling a skier in the Catalina ski race about 10 years ago. The skier I had pulled a few times retired after that race, I got busy with work and kids, and just haven't made it back out. I don't enjoy towing my boat long distances, and certainly don't enjoy towing through socal traffic for a long weekend of boating. I'll get back out there eventually.

How many boats showed up? Looks like a good group.
I don't know if you are on Facebook or Instagram, but there are some great pics and videos posted. It looked like a good turnout to me, and a lot of fun.
