… Thats the road I remember… Had to traverse it pretty slowly anyway… As we were in my old 23 foot Boise Cascade Lifetime motorhome…
… Remember dropping down into Rosarita beach and I don’t know exactly what year it would’ve been, but the main street was dirt… I don’t remember seeing any pavement anywhere???…
Thats what it was on my discovery trip in 1980... Rosarito main street was indeed a hard packed dirt road. I had a SDSU gal take me down there for the day and we got pulled over just driving down main in my crazy looking 75 Chevy van. She told me to let her handle this and popped out and went to sit next to Federalde in his car. She grew up in SD so knew the deal... I had my side mirror on her wondering what she was gonna do.... from what I remember she gave him what money we had [sorry no blowjob ha] and maybe some shitty jewelry and jumped back in van and I said ok thats enough we're going back into San Diego. I had a motorcycle so only time I ever went back was on that when I felt a little less vulnerable to those pull overs.

… It was probably 80 and 81 when I was hanging out with my Newport Beach girlfriend …and Ensenada was our usual???… never got pulled over???…
… Parked the motorhome next to the military compound in Ensenada one time… And a soldier told us in Spanish that we couldn’t park there… I don’t remember what dialogue I laid on him, but as soon as he saw my girlfriend he gave up❤️… we spent the night… It was a fairly short walk to the bar…

Kinda feel like I've asked him enough for a few days.... picking it up fri or sat and will chat more.

Look at the axle code listed on the tag inside the driver's door jamb.
Likely a C5 axle code, 4.10:1 ratio.
At least that's the most common one.
If it's 4.10's, 5th gear at 60 is just under 2000 rpm.

Good tip.... not that I can do much about it.... hmmmmm; 2K is 60 mph..... I guess thats about as fast as I'd wanna go on my toll rd but most do 70. Thinking for a 36 yr old truck appx 3K rpms at 70 might be a bit much to ask.
Errands I run on a different road and 60 would be fine while 2K rpm aint working hard at all I guess.

Roughly 2300 at 70
And 3300 at 100, if you dare.

PSD 5 speed? I believe the OD gear in the gas 5 speed offered a bit lower cruising RPM. It's been awhile but a wanna say 70 mph in the 460 5 speed truck I drove was smooth and felt normal. 70 mph in the diesel 5 speed it was roaring and felt like the wrong cruising rpm for that 7.3. Both trucks are 4.10s.

Saweet! "Smoooth" in this old thang would be nice .... I have a very low bar on it from a ride quality perspective ... If I can get Smooth anything I'd be over the moon.

Being 2wd the coils will absorb a lot. Another big help is running lower psi in the tires. I think I ran 50 front and 60 rear in that truck. Regular cab trucks do ride a little rougher and are louder but not bad to were it will make boobies sag.

Um, yes.
The ZF5 has a 0.77:1 over drive, gas or diesel.
With the 4.10's and about a 32" tire (235/85 R16LT), is where I calculated the rpm vs speed.
Smaller tires would increase rpm.

Not sure if this helps with the tire size you guys are discussing

I researched it a little more. There are close and wide ration ZF5's. Some sites say one has a 0.77:1 OD and other 0.76:1 OD. Some say both have 0.77:1.

All those stickers add horsepower. Might be a little too much power for most people. Any decent truck is going for decent coin nowdays. His issue is going to be smogging it.
@bonesfab Just learned its recently smogged.... but I'd love to hear what you mean by saying "Might be too much power for most people" He did state two potential buyers test drove it and said too much juice ... and they were young guys, lol. I drive it for first time Friday/ Sat.

I guess this truck is taking me back to my redneck highschool days in VA....so when somebody says "Too much power" I always wonder what that means... all we did in HS was drop every paycheck into our shit cars to get more power. Small block Novas and Camaros were about it.

I still spend most of my money on cars. Just learn the throttle and you should be fine. Just because it has it doesn’t mean you need to use it all the time. Most of my cars hardly see over half throttle. its always better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

My thinking exactly.... driving in my area down there just re entering the toll as well as the service road can get real aggressive... folks fly and don't seem to brake much for entries.... I'll be shooting a lot of gravel with a light rear end I bet so gotta watch for the broken windshields etc....

Bump... hey guys just wanted to thank you all for great comments and knowledge share. That was lots of good banter over a week. I'll be grabbing the truck in Palm Springs in early am before Hillary arrives and heading to shore where I'll drop a stereo system in ..... please feel free to offer system recommendations but remember this its a small cab and it'll need to be a system that doesn't draw visual attention as criminals walk by with tire irons looking to smash & grab. I totally understand you guys like BLING out there however this is a different enviorment .... subtle visually but crisp High sound and big low end desired [For my 70s Funk] .Everything will be Spotified. @RiverDave

I hope all went well with the truck. I have one of these speakers that I use at the beach, around the house, and on the boat sometimes. The battery lasts forever and it puts out pretty good bass for a portable speaker.

Thanks... she broke down on the 10 coming home from Palm Springs yesterday .... turns out when you activate the cruise control the linkage to the carb comes off after maybe 5 minutes. I was cruising at around 70 amazed that cruise control even worked on a 36 year old truck and all the sudden the gas pedal gave me zero throttle. I got lucky in that I made it over to the shoulder from middle lane with too many big rigs all over the place. 🙌 I know nothing about engines so called the seller and he walked me through re attaching the cable. I was under the hood while big rigs are doing 70 about 15 feet from me. Fun. Got underway in maybe 10 minutes and I guess I'll need to get that fixed.
Great riding F250 overall... exceeded my expectations for sure.... she doesn't like to stay under 70 and rides super smooth and remains in center of lane easily. That engine is so fun.... I haven't had a clutch car since 1980 ha... but funny how fast that came back to me. I lit tires unexpectedly in that super low 1st gear down by my place and shocked all the beach walkers. thing gets lots of attention cause she looks like such a beater but engine sound is so misleadiing. Crazy fun.

Also... I ordered that boom box mentioned earlier in thread from Best Buy... should check lotsa boxes for my needs. Picking it up if rains settle.

After driving it on freeways a bit these first couple days it seems to be running really well. There's no tach yet but engine rpms sound/ feel pretty low up around 70-75mph even in 4th gear.... I have to remember there's a 5th Overdrive cause I haven't driven a clutch in forever. Spoke with seller today and he said he would "drag" some guys and be doing around 115mph and felt that if he put a 750 carb on it he'd get more top end. [He has a 650 on it] The engine tuners did recommend a 750 over the 650 but is what it is and frankly I ain't doing over 85 in it regardless lol. Hell the original dash mph gauge tops out at 85. Happy camper... goes to Mexico 9/2

Bump... So last stage of this thread is getting Cali smog certification solved. This is a Ca registered vehicle and has a tuned engine with zero modern era emission systems, Hooker Headers and long tube exhaust with Magnaflow mufflers. Its not in the Cali DMV system so I'll be locating a smog guy and pay him "fee" before driving it to Baja where she'll exist. Eventually I'll get her registered and licensed in Baja cause I want local tags for less attention from Federalez.

Why even bother with the CA smog gymnastics?

Do you need it in your name here before transferring registration to Baja?

If yes, just non op it here in CA, get your title, and drive it over the border so you don’t have to deal with smog.

Dude, register it in AZ. Don’t even bother with CA. I’m sure you could find an address.

Good comments and questions fellas... not my norm on here to speak too much about my personal life just avoiding judgements but lately I sense a cool fellowship [Appreciate you bitchez] ..... so only fair after some of my recent post to divulge.... I've lived in same apartment in a building I've owned for 23 years and now the local rentals have gone sky high and my place could be pulling money if I wasn't in it... it needs to be upgraded and I began thinking recently what the hell.... I'm at the stage of my life to make a change... I did this in 1990 when I came west knowing no one and thrived... now my neighborhood has changed and evolved and I'm older and I have different needs so I looked elsewhere. I found through friends a spot that I felt gave me simiar climate & ocean life and discovered a vibe I like. So I'm diving in with both feat in Rosarito, MX.

Fair question for sure.... don't have that answer yet but I will.... Ultimately I will do what is necessary to get the Baja Beast into them Mexi tags ... key is less attention... Cali plates bring em out at night. We mostly use taxis in evenings which takes the shaninegans of local law enforcement away. Just how its done.

I got an email from seller from the engine build shop speaking to what they did to his motor based on goals he wanted.... I'm struggling copying and pasting it on my beater laptop... think you motor guys might enjoy that data so I'll try again ... meantime I was detailing the interior today and grabbed a pic of door jam you mentioned.... does this tell you anything? Sorry about the sideways pic? I didn't see any other driver door jam info

.., I definitely wish you the very best in Rosarita… wish I could do something like that… But I am trapped in an old neighborhood in North Hollywood and am pretty much used up…🤷🏽‍♀️

Heres an alternate way to share the engine build data.... I share this cause like boats our trucks are emotional to us guys [I make no secret that I am a redneck happily stuck in the west] .. opinions always well received ... well, mostly.... you guys are motor dudes so jump the fuck in! Did my best loading this info but its not in order so I apologize fellas. Hopefully it makes sense.

Axle code 39 appears to be 3.55:1 gears.
With that 5 speed, a freeway flyer.

Dan'l
… Is a five speed ,,,one to one …in fifth gear???… if it is overdriven perfect for freeway cruzin… if it is not overdriven 3.55 are still quite good for city streets and freeway driving😎…plus you’ve got tall tiresj …which might add a bit more tall to the gearing… depending on what the tire size was from the factory???

Odds are, in a truck that old, none of that info on the door jamb sticker applies anymore.

Also, from your build info, you need to run premium fuel (91) all of the time.

It's nice it has a Petronix. 👍🏼

The 5 speed is an overdrive box, (ZF5) with a 0.77:1 likely 5th gear.
Final drive ratio would be 2.73:1 in fifth.
