Hello everyone, I am new to the forums and just thought I would share my boat build with you. I bought this boat in Nevada about four years ago and saw that it needed alot of tlc like intierior, a good buff, carpet and so on, all the things an old boat needs. I bought it knowing that I had some work to do. When I got it home I pulled the carpet out to replace it and I found alot of dryrot in the floor, so i pulled the floor and found dryrot in the bulkheads and a broken stringer... ahhh crap!!! So the fun began and I started to fix and change things. I had the boat regelled and then stopped for a couple of years to save money for a new house. Well now I am starting on my boat again. This is where Im at with the boat, have alot of work to do on the inside and hopefully I'll try to finish it for the summer.

The boat looks GREAT!!

It already had Cav Plates on it from the factory? Or did the previous owner do that? (or do you know?)

I'd give my left nut for that boat exactly as it sits.. No motor, no rigging, no interior etc.. Build it from the ground up with a blank canvas.. :)

Thanks RD, I was very pleased the way to boat came out, as for the cav plates, not sure when they were installed.

Looks awesome! What are you gonna do for power? Post some pics of the cav plates when you get a chance.

Just guessing/hoping that you see all that's wrong in the geometry of the setup in your boat vs. the one with the cav rod moved above the exhaust.

Great boat! (I have the sister boat in the Howard 24' Kruizer).

Keep us posted with pix of your progress.

Yes I noticed the rods toward the outside of the cav plate became amost horizontal with no movement. When I took the boat apart I notice the previous owner actually fixed the pushrod in place so the plates wouldnt move. I will plan on redoing them so the cross bar is higher on the transom. If the terminology is wrong teach me i like to learn. I know this has been brought up before, but with the spectras that have cav plates do they make a difference in the ride?

Not sure that any of them had a 'factory cav plate' as all that I've seen out of that mold didn't have plate recesses (the notch in the bottom that allows the plate to go under/in the bottom and eliminate the hinge mount that yours has)

Just a little history for you, the Spectra 24 bottom mold was also used by Howard and then sold to Sanger. My Howard 24 and Dossanger's Sanger 24 share the same bottom as your XS and the Spectra Cruiser.

Yellow is my Howard, White and red is Dossanger's Sanger.

CampbellCarl I like those two boats, very nice! Interesting the bottom was used on other manuf. hulls. is it just because the bottom was good? Do you notice anything different between the two boats?

Dossangers boat is a Spectra 24 XS low deck.
Spectra sold Sanger both decks.

Im starting mine dont know if I should glass the floor boards from the center
stringer out with a removable center or make them all removable.

Great looking boat! You have done a great job, that 24 is a nice hull. If you are replacing the old turnbuckels and boss's let me know what you want for the old ones?

very nice build :thumbsup What type of motor did you go with?

I noticed you were interested in going with a 540 CI BBC. If so, take a look at the motor I am selling. Would be nice to see the motor go into a boat this nice :thumbsup

As of now I am going to use the engine that came with it, a 454. Bought a house so my piggy bank for the boat went to zero. Ohh well, priorities first right!

Ok so I'll be putting in the engine and v-drive in a couple of weeks. A couple of thoughts have been rolling around in my head. Do you think a tranny would be a good idea with a slightfly modified 454 thats close to 480 hp or stick with the velvet drive?

The other thought is when I have new tanks made should I have them built to sit on the interior floor or sit on the hull floor?

Excellent... progress is always a good sign. I'd love to see the pictures of the rebuild. Was the old prop shaft bent or otherwise in rough shape?

Whatever became of this boat? It's been awhile since we seen an update with new pics. One of the nicest paint schemes we have seen for sure.

Here are some pics of the Spectras progress. Had new rails made, new engine plates with feet, new plate and braces for a casale. Came out great...Have to get the v-drive polished and put that together. Sorry it was a little dusty, but I detailed the boat after I took the pics:D I'm going to start on the floor next then new tanks and bracing for that. I love this stuff but my two little boys are keeping me busy. Enjoy....Matt

Looks good! Glad you've still got it and working on gettin' her going. Is that a Ford bellhousing pattern I see? What do you plan on doing motor-wise?

I notice that on post #17 spectrabrent refered to spectra selling the XS to Sanger including the low deck. I was not aware that they made two decks and wondered if you could provide more info or maybe post some photo's of the 2 decks. I am currentley restoring a 24XS and would like to know what it is deck wise. I've enclosed a few Photo's of my project hope to have ready for the spectra regatta in June. Thanks in advance. spectra 24 005.jpg spectra 24 002.jpg spectra 24 001.jpg

The 24xs is the sporty version of the 24. From what I have seen all of the XS models have the low deck design. The regular 24 has a different steering position and interior arrangement and usually has side windows. You can scroll through the Spectra 24 threads on RDP and see the differences between the two.

You have the XS Deck.

There was also a 3rd deck, that Howard did, which is essentially a retooled version of the Cruiser Deck.
