There is a Dutch kid that lives in Australia, he flew over to America bought a 500 KTM in San Diego. He got on the Bike road it all the way to La Paz with the intention of entering the Baja 1000. He needed a fuel brake (I don’t even know what that is?). A gps tracker and they said he needed new tires.. scrounged it all up and entered and ran a large portion of the race in 2nd place!!

He stopped at some random pit and they gave him some water and tacos and he was off again. Stopped at another random pit with a bent rim and they zip tied the front tire to the rim and he’s about 50 miles out from finishing right now.. I’m not sure what place he is in but I think it’s still top ten.

To iron man this race is crazy.. even finishing is an accomplishment. This kid is doing pretty well with zero pre running, zero support, just him a backpack (which I’m presuming has his clothes and his passport in it?) and a ktm 500.

He’s about 45 miles our right now..

My wife who doesn’t randomly care about Offroad racing has been watching the tracker all night and updates.. crazy inspirational story.

It doesn’t matter which baja1000 feed you click on everybody is talking about this guy and rooting for him.

It’s absolutely incredible. Just scrolling one of the feeds and every post is about him.

That's called having the Baja Spirit. This kid is going to be the main character in Dust to Glory 3. Lynden Jones did it a few years ago, I would bet money that that's where this kid got his motivation.

I would be very surprised if he doesn’t get a few factory offers after this.. he has done more for ktm, the Baja 1000, and score then just about anyone..

When you have housewives that normally don’t care at all about Offroad racing staying up late and following his progression that is saying something.

This kid needs to be made famous! I hope he gets endorsement deals and a lot more free tacos. Simply unreal. 20 years ago I'd heard of Europeans and some Japanese guys, big money and new bikes, come and try. Most didn't make it 100 miles.

WELL THE DUTCHIE HAS PASSED TIMING. HE HAS FINISHED. COMING IN TO THE STAGE SOON. THAT IS AWESOME
If he really pulled this off, and the whole story checks out, that's probably the greatest Baja story ever. This is the stuff that Legends are made of.

I wonder if he knows what he really just accomplished?

For a motorcycle rider in a Baja race, any pit is your pit. If you are in need and pull into a pit, and they deny you, that's pretty much the end of their tenure or credibility.

The same goes for pretty much every other class. Baja is a different world, we take care of our own down there.

What an awesome read! Left a big smile on my face as I'm sitting here at 4:15 am scouring the internet looking for more info.

I have raced desert several times and lets just say I sucked pretty bad compared to this guy.

I don’t follow the racing either but was good seeing this guy do what most would say can’t be done.

This guy needs a good relaxin after this doing it solo like he did.

Can you imagine the scene when he went to buy the bike?
“ I want to buy a KTM”
What are you looking for? What kind of riding are you doing?
“ I’m racing the Baja next Monday “
Ummm….. kay…

From the time I heard about him I was following what a great story..
The other rider I couldn’t believe but kept checking on was the paraplegic on a bike and I saw he finished it as well also.

Very interesting story but one poster said he had the bike in the back of his truck and everyone else says he rode it down there? Still quite the accomplishment.

That's how stories go. People imagine how they want the story to be.

Iron Man is a huge accomplishment regardless if it was a new bike from a dealer.

Cool story. I'm guessing there is a ton more to it. Either way, he should roll outta this with a least a new bike from KTM and a promo deal with the Baja Race Coordinators.

When I hear shit like this I wish I was young with zero responsibility again.😀

Legends are usually spun from a truth. The telling makes the legend bigger. Like Mel Gibson in Braveheart, "Aye, they say I have lightning from my eyes, and fireball out my arse..."

Sometimes the hero of the story isn't a giant, and the legend not entirely true. At times though, we could use a feel-good story and this one surely is. From the rider himself, to every pit that helped him along the way, all heros of the sport.

I hope this is legit. It‘s one of the best feel good stories I have read for sometime.

This is exactly what sports should be, an escape from politics and social pressures. Just cheering on the underdog or your favorite entity.
I abhor what our culture has done to sports, art, and entertainment in general.

This young man will sell more KTM‘s than Malcom Smith sold Husky’s after On Any Sunday! It’s a victory just to finish any Baja race with hours of pre running and preparation not to mention pit stop coordination. Incredible story, much respect from me!

If u read the story about a guy buying a new bike in back of truck above,

That was from 2015.
OMG you mean (gasp) misinformation on RDP?
Regardless if the first report is legit about buying the bike and riding it down there (which by looking at the worn out tires in one of the pics) it is simply an amazing accomplishment. True Ironman in every sense there.
After reading the post about 2015 again, maybe I misunderstood the context?

Lynden Jones had a similar story and was featured in the movie Dust 2 Glory, which is what I posted about previously. He finished a Baja race with no support, no pit crew, and no pre running. His nickname was wingtip, due to the shoes he was wearing when he showed up for Tech inspection.

This Dutch kid is a fucking legend, he just unlocked whatever door he wants to walk through in the world of off-road.

Amazing, how do you “lone it” with no crew or pit? How do you fuel or get a tire?

View attachment 1304189
An Ironman privateer bike should be able to get support at any pit, no questions asked. Somebody would have to be a real dick head to turn him down.

For tires, I'm sure any Baja pits or factory race pit would hook him up.

That sucks to hear he bought a new bike and drove it down in his truck. Still a good story and great accomplishment to finish baja with no support team.

You could not make this up!!!!!!!!! What genuine dude. Looks pretty fresh for what he just went through.

Wonder how many times he went down, the silt by the farmland miles 313.

KTM needs him as their poster boy for sure.

Most of us couldn't make to pavement ride down to La Paz. LOL

What an awesome story!

While they were interviewing him, he probably no longer remembered his moms first name. He probably hadn’t had an original thought for the last 100 miles. Even simple arithmetic would have been difficult. He had to have been beyond exhausted! But he is The Man! Unbelievable!

I am so impressed with this guys accomplishment, that I don’t even know where to start……..
