Woke up to that and I just had a San Diego buddy fly there maybe 2 days ago.... retired 55 yr old Naval helicopter 60 Cal gunner with two tours in Desert Storm [no not yours ]... last year he spent a month in Vietnam & Thailand and hasn't been the same since. Says he couldn't come back to dating the US chicks in Diego after experiencing the lifestyle and attitudes there.... so put shit in storage, set up his yacht party biz for remote management [MaiTai Charters.com] and bought a one way ticket. He'll live in hotels and dive right back into that tiny brown stuff he adores... think he landed maybe 24 hours before that rocker hit lol.... wondering if his plans have changed lol

Friend of mine did the same, Army Vet, sold all his stuff here and took off for Thailand permanently. I sent him a message this morning by coincidence asking how he likes it before seeing the news on the earthquake lol

I'd be curious to hear how long ago he set out for there and how he likes it so far.... as for the quake not really wrapped up in that. I figure media outlets love pushing death n destruction world wide so likelihood our buds got crushed is long shot.... big place geographically.... 7.7 gets everyones attention locally for sure.

The Alaska quake of 1964 was a 9.2 and lasted 3 minutes. I was in Anchorage for about 6 weeks in 1971. Met many who had experienced that quake. It occurred at 5:36pm. So, many parents were not yet home from work. The young neighborhood kids banded together and were cared for by their older teenage brothers and sisters. Some entire neighborhoods only had a couple of adults at home. Those adults became the coaches, med care providers and councelors for the numerous groups of young children and their teenaged brothers and sisters. It took days for some of the parents to get back to their homes and families. The sound and feelings of an 18 wheeler passing by, still freaked out some, 7 years after the quake. Believe that was the 2nd strongest quake on record. There were 11 after shocks the day after which were 6.0 and larger. 131 was the death toll. Only 9 from the actual quake. The accompanying tsunami caused an additional 122 deaths in Alaska, Oregon and CA. Interesting there were no deaths in the state of Washington.

He left about 6 weeks ago. Single guy, he would go out there every year for a couple weeks and have the time of his life if ya know what I mean. He is an electrical engineer and construction Building Information Modeler so can work remotely. I used to joke with him about he just liked the abundance of ladyboys 😂

That Alaska quake was felt very strongly in Washington even. I was in Tacoma, in a Catholic elementary school at the time, and the nuns chased us outside. We stood next to the church, watching the steeple sway above us, and the street surging like an ocean wave. I’ve been around for several good quakes since then, but nothing quite like that.

You guys who work in downtown LA....take a look at the Elysian Park Fault. It is a blind thrust fault that runs right under downtown.
I had some disaster prep training many moons ago from a LA Fire guy who was very worried about this one. Apparently it was discovered by geologists doing seismograph work for oil compaines off the coast of LA.. The fact that I clearly remember this training and that fault info after 20 years should tell ya...it made impression.

My Dad was 5 yrs old and riding to school in his older brothers milkman truck when the 1933 Long Beach quake hit. They were going down Long Beach Blvd towrds the beach when it started. Dad used to tell that his brother cursed as a crack appeard in the road ahead, and then they saw the old civic building on the beach that the roof was just visible from the street literally dip out of sight...and then come back up. Scared the living daylights out of my Dad.

I lived in a highrise apartment in downtown Vancouver English Bay, My apartment unit was on the 22nd floor. This was a 32 or 34 floor building built around 1963 with one of the best views of English Bay. There is 3 elevators, indoor swimming pool, I used to practice how fast I could run downstairs in the fire escape route if all the elevators failed to work, lol. No way I'd want to live in those tall buildings anymore. Vancouver is a major candidate for a real big earthquake. 60 plus story buildings are built up like crazy with the Chinese infused real estate boom. I've experienced a pretty strong one in around 1975, living in a two level old house. I thought the window frames would pop out. My buddy lived in my tall building I moved in years later and he told me the building was swaying like a MF'r. He had a party at the time about 2:00 AM. They were probably all drunk, so no one freaked out, haha
My building is the tallest flat/skinny one Was a corner unit

My boy just checked in from BangCock.... looks safe... tried to paste his pic with a hot lady way up in a tower restaurant. Man that city looks like downtown Manhattan .... guess that quake was a ways away

Hard to see, but this one looks like there's a crane on top, I'm thinking this one is still under construction.
It was, and I read dozens of workers were in the building when it went down. What's amazing is this structure and others shown in videos are in Bangkok, 600 miles away from the epicenter. That's a big one.

Very sad, glad your family's fine.
She has some family in Thailand, but her close relatives are all still in Laos. Luckily that country is all dirt roads and nothing over 2 stories; not much to get destroyed.

I couldn't imagine how scary that was for some of those people in the videos. Crazy stuff for sure.
