So I've seen this boat sitting in front of my house for 26 years now. We moved into the house when I was 2 weeks old and back in the day (about 20 years ago) this thing was actually water worthy, but has since been neglected by my dad due to family matters and what not. Now that he has moved on to another house, he has allowed me to rent his old house, where his boat is being stored. It's a custom 1966 Schiada Flat bottom, 19' V-drive, powered by a Chrysler 392ci Iron head, Iron Block HEMI. Seeing as how he is approaching the 60 yr. mark and can't really turn wrenches like he used to, I figured I would take a break from my passion of building crawlers, and see what I can do with this thing to bring it back to life. This way he can enjoy it during his retirement, just like he did when he was about my age. This will be my first vessel that I've worked on, so hopefully I can get some pointers from the experienced captains on the board. Here it goes....

a couple things that stuck in my head from when he would talk about fixing it up are..

Anodized Aluminum channeling on the stringers? I've seen a lot of Carbon fiber these days so idk.

It has a Halibrand V-drive, not a Casale like I see EVERYWHERE. Not sure if this is good or bad.

The gel coat is obviously in need of repair, and the hull needs to be checked out. ?? I'm taking it to a shop for this. I do NOT want to take this portion on......or should I? lol

Motor has been bored 0.40 over and has 350 carbs. Motor was originally built by Keith Black????? Has been rebuilt at least 5 times from my dad putting the boat underwater in the younger years.

I definitely can not get my ass into this thing, and I don't think he will be able to maneuver into it either. So at least the captains chair will be enlarged, and or re-positioned.

I'll start with pulling the motor, and removing the vessel from the trailer, so that it can be sent out for paint.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, and I hope to be out on the water with my pops here soon. Parker here we come!!!!

Purely random thoughts here.....

Throw a tape measure from nose to stern (not including the cav plates) probably a 17'6"r not 19'

Halibrand box is probably a parallel box (not v-drive but the input and output shafts are parallel to each other) usable but noisy as hell

Seat size....do you plan to replace interior? If so, maybe make the front seat a 50/50 instead of the 40/60 thats in it now.

Ryan Partridge (aka Tor) on these boards is the un-official Leonard Schiada era keeper of the old Schiada flatty records. He'll be along soon and ask for the original hull number (should be A xxx), you may want to look for the title and have that number handy when he asks....

Post photos as you go and ask as many questions as you want many opposing answers to.......this is a good group...

back around then, Ted Halibrand was in Gardena, and Ernie Casale was across town, so it was probably 'time VS money' on that point . At least it has nice cavitation hardware . If you become disillusioned at all the possible 'repair bills' and work involved, give me a PM, I'll make you an offer .

Very cool boat! 1966/1967 was a transition year for the Schiada flatbottom, the mold was re-tooled and the boats got a sharper chine and some other updates which improved handling.

I'm curious what the ID badge says that's riveted to the back of the hull. Any chance you could snap a photo of that?
