Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I called cousin Ken, the boat owner, and he told me to tell you it is a 5 up Briggs & Stratton covered by a plastic bb Chevy look alike! Seriously, the Chevy is a:
? 60 over 454 (468 cubic inch)
? 9.2 -1 compression
? ported oval port heads
? balanced & blueprinted two bolt block
? steel crank
? forged wiesco pistons
? stock hi perf chevy rods
? Milodon windage tray
? melling hi volume oil pump
? and a Lou valentine custom 10 qt oil pan.
? valvetrain is a comp cams hydraulic roller
? lift is somewhere in the 530-540 range
? duration somewhere in the 270 range
? can't remember
? overlap is 113 degrees.
? 7/16 push rods by Manley
? stainless valves .225 intake .188 exhaust
? MSD dist, w/ MSD 6M2 box.
? Intake manifold is an Edelbrock performer
? Holley 650 cfm, 4011 spread bore carb
? HP is probably around 450 with that carb,
? probably giving up 20 or so HP with the little carb
? really sacrificing HP is in the exhaust (logs/not headers)
Pretty close to what I a building motor wise for my 65 Mandella. What gears are in the box and does he know his top mph? Just trying to get a feel for what these little Mandella's can do
Thanks!
The gears are 18's . Prop is 12" x 15" menkens steel 3 blade, no cup. MPH prediction is always gonna be sketchy at best. % of slip is the big issue in the equation. Early Mandella's are stinkin heavy! More slip!! Wide open I run 5000-5200 RPM. Thomas & I GPSd it at 69.2 at 5000, so at 5200 we're some where in the early 70's probably 72-73. It's not bad considering my little 650 spread bore carb. I think I lost a couple hundred RPM with the OT's . They're about 2 7/8" inside diameter as compared to my thru hulls at 3 1/2" even though the OT's are a bit shorter. That's more than you wanted , but there ya go.
NO, that is great info, thanks!!! Anyone know how heavy these old Mandella's are??? I know mine is definetly heavier than my Hondo, but a whole different animal buit for entirely different reasons...
