One fact about all the diesels such as Ford, Chevy, Dodge the only one that has been successfully adapted for marine use is the Cummins. The parts are cheap and the reliability is incredible. They have been called the 6 71 Detroits of the modern age. The marine use is like climbing a grade in a truck it's entire time. Our fishing boat has 2 370 HP 5.9s with 2500 Hrs. and not so much a blip. Sure there are more powerfull engines but who wants to have to work on them or improve a engine that was supposed to work.

Interestingly enough, the 6.0 in school buses with out the emissions crap works just fine. I am convinced that just like the muscle car emissions killed the diesel

I have a friend who works on school buses. He said all the 6.0 ones are junk amongst the fleet. Pretty much anything with a 6.0 is going to have issues. I totally agree about emissions killing the diesel

The buses were the VT365 motor. Pretty much the 6.0 without all the emission stuff. They don't have to adhere to the emission levels like the passenger cars.

The VT365 has a much better track record. They aren't tuned as high as the passenger motor either. It's actually a pretty nice international/navistar motor.

Well its done!

Its been "semi" bullet proofed. Washed for the first time in a few months and its ready to drive.
Thank you for the advice, suggestions, stories and generally scaring the crap out of me about my truck. I replaced a lot of other shit while it was in the shop and apart, so I think it should be 'ok' for a while, (At least a week I hope):D

Thanks again for all the posts.:thumbup:

The main items were a new oil cooler,BP egr, Sinister coolant filter all the gaskets, plugs, pickup tubes and other crap that goes along with doing this job. Also a bunch little things he saw that could be a problem soon, IE power steering lines, belts ETC. I have the list but i'm a lazy bastard and ain't going to type it out.

But the numbers on my Edge and Scangauge all look perfect so i'm happy. (as one can be after dropping a couple grand)

It is what it is.:grumble:

I hope it works out well for ya FT. It is a helluva thing to agonize over, I have a number of friends who are going through the same thing. One is dead set on the Cummins swap, but he is trying to figure out the smog deal before he pulls the trigger on it.
I am going to keep my old '97 for as long as I can get parts for it, have started a little stash of stuff already. Since it isn't on the smog list if worse comes to worse I will do a pumped 12 valve conversion, and convert it to a stick at the same time.
I have a pal who has a barn full of 7.3 cores tho, and he would probably donate one and all the machine work to freshen the long block to keep me from "bastardizing" my truck. He hates that stuff. :D

This is why I bought a Chevy! I looked at a lot of really nice Fords but I didn't see them selling for $5K less than comparable Chevy's or Dodge's.

FT, your trucks very nice and I hope it will be trouble free for years to come. Just out of curiosity, what is it lacking that makes you think you will get a new one?

Vehicles, rv,s, toy haulers, dirt bikes or boats are not investments and they always depreciate in value. I would pay the 5k $ well spent in my opinion. You will definitely wish you did it when you break down on the 40 while it's 115 degrees, with a truckload of people. Once you make the upgrades, keep it. It's a great lookin truck.

So here is the deal:

I recently bought a Scangauge after talking with rivrrts429 (thank you sir). I then found to my delight that my truck was showing me all the readings and vitals I didn't want to see. I then took the truck to Domestic Diesel to confirm what I saw, and YUP!! my truck is on the path to take a fat dump. So now I have three choices.

Option A: Drive it till it takes a shit and fix it all then.
Option B: Fix only what needs fixing which will buy me 5,6,7+ additional years but not solve the problem, kinda like a band-aid. A $2,500 band-aid!
Option C: Slap on the full bulletproof kit to the tune of about $5,000. This will eliminate this problem forever.

I don't know if I will keep this truck for the long haul. I may want to sell it in the future.
So here is my question and need for advice.

If I do the full bulletproof kit ($5k) will I be able to get that 5K back out of it when I go to sell it? Or will it be basically a bad investment? ($ wise, not talking about peace of mind) I don't mind spending the money to do it right but I don't want to throw it away if the resale value does not reflect the bulletproof kit upon selling it.

I could just do the 1/2 kit and be done with it. (for the next few years, but its not really fixed)

So what do you "people" think??
I hope all that crap makes sense.

Here is the truck.

Thank you for the advice.

FT

GOod info so far.

Can you tell me more about the scangauge and how it works? What info did you get from it that told you you were headed for issues? Is it easy to use and read? etc etc etc

Hey ROC let me know and I will bring my truck down and you can see how the banks IQ works. It is a scan gauge (code reader) plus it shows what the engine is doing at all times. You can monitor 5 items on the screen and has a bunch of items you can put on the screen. it has warning that are preset or you can modify that keep engine safe.

Thank you. And I bought it on a "wild butt hair" kinda thing. But I only use it once a week (if that) and really have no use for it. I kinda miss my ol SUV gig. I will probably go back to that side one day.
Plus, its hard to sleep in the truck if I drink too much :D
