A different experience for sure. Wanted to stay away from rowdy crowds but still wanted to go do “something”. We decided to go check out a celebration in a small town not far from us. First surprise was the “shuttle buses” that took us from the off site parking to the event. Nice setup.

We got to the event, they weren’t checking coolers for contraband, seemed weird but I certainly felt safe there. People are super polite out here. Enjoyed some BBQ and waited for the fireworks while listening to the live band. Everyone was well behaved, no pot smoke to deal with. I have no issues with weed, I just don’t want to smell it everywhere I go. There was a prayer before the National Anthem, folks were respectful, teenagers even took their hats off. The fireworks show was unbelievable. It was on par with the display you’d see at the President’s day deal in Havasu, maybe better. Afterwards, we headed back to the bus pickup area which was well organized and orderly. Did I mention folks around here are polite? Maybe it’s sad that that’s what really stands out to me about this place. Traffic leaving was pretty nice too, I didn’t see any road raging or anything like it

The respect thing was a big shock when we moved out here. When looking for houses, a cowboy kid held the door for my wife on the way into the store, and a shaved head, ear pierced kid held it on the way out. Them and a bunch of others piled into a pickup at the gas pumps and headed out. Odd mix visually, but as a whole, people are just nicer in less populated areas. Less stress maybe? Not as many wound up from hours in traffic?

This reminds me of the time I went to Prescott, AZ for their town Christmas treee lighting ceremony. There were thousands of people in the streets, no one needed the police to be around in order for them to be civil and there weren't any inconsiderate people spoiling anything for anyone. I think the only time I saw the police was when someone needed an ambulance and they walked in front of the ambulance when it was moving through the crowdd. That was at least 10 years ago, I wonder if it's all gone to hell by now.

I couldn't agree more Monkeys - The wife and I comment all the time we should have moved to Texas years ago. I know it is changing fast and half due to the knuckle heads from other states coming in and bringing the bad habits with them but still amazing. We have been here going on 5 years and it still blows my mind on how nice, respectful and family oriented everyone is.

It’s still the same. We were there in November visiting friends for Thanksgiving. They had a parade around the City Square. There was a nice small town feel to everything.

Been here 12. It's gotten a bit busier, and covid really cranked up the stupidity, but still good. The past 2 years it seems people that were more "lib" types have started to come back around. It's like they still had the stress energy from wherever they came from. The police, fire and veterans are still respected here, even if the first 2 don't make much. People still wave or nod to others they don't know on the side roads. I'm happy we moved here when we did.

@Kachina26 and @toto if you don't mind me asking what parts of Texas are you guys in?
My wife and I have been pondering the idea of moving out of AZ. Not sure if it's just a dream or maybe something we may pursue. We have zero knowledge on good or bad places. We definitely need to have a lake to boat as that is our main family hobby. Feel free to PM. I appreciate any and all info! The event looks like a good time. Nice to see that still happening in places without needing to set up the doctagon every time you turn around.

Hey CSmith - I am in North Texas Mckinney/ Melissa area and I was searching for the same thing you mentioned. We have no children and boating has always been a big part of our life as well. I had several areas to choose from in Texas when moving and we picked North Texas for weather and all the lakes from 15 Min to 6 hours from us which include Oklahoma, Arkansas Missouri and opened up a hole new experience.

It can be a sort of culture shock when you are exposed to the real world after being subjected to the CA conditioning.
The sad thing is, and I dwelled on it for a bit later that night, I actually thought/think something as basic as common courtesy is a remarkable character trait.

We're in North Texas in the Fort Worth area. I chose an area northwest of Fort Worth. Mostly because I was in a rural area of California and like not having neighbors right on top of me. We landed in a town called Azle.

I have lived in the country(oregon) the majority of my life. When we moved to the city in '98 it was crazy to me. We are now back in the country where everyone waves, says hello and opens doors for others, its ma'am and sir if you dont know their name. Heck the little market down the street, one of the workers text me this afternoon and said she had something for me, ran down there and recieved a plate of her magic bars(free), butterscotch, chocolate, coconut and nuts. When I stop at papa murphys on Tuesdays to get a pizza($12.99 any large) I grab an extra a drop it off for them. Everytime we stop they bring the dog out treats.

Chivalry still exists in certain places!!

Believe me, I get it.
I travel all around this country. Most of the places I work at are obviously oil producing regions, and all that that implies.
Salt of the earth, ranch and farm areas, hard working blue collar areas. Many people associate that with lower classes…it is not.
It’s respectful, it’s chivalrous, and any other way is a foreign concept.
When you walk into a cafe in say Watford City ND for breakfast and every other person has a sidearm and a John Deere hat on (and it’s not a statement, it’s just how they do) you fell pretty fucking safe and it’s a pretty damned polite scenario. Then Alice herself walks up and says “‘mornin sweety…coffee this mornin’?”
It’s a long long way from Sacramento…and all that that implies.
I am sincerely happy for you guys.
Many never get to see it, and they think the southwest bubble is the end all.
I live in AZ now, but I have never forgotten what this nation really is coast to coast.
Again, congrats.

I'm down in Mesa. It's pretty much eastern California now. I recon it's my fault. Don't worry Texans, I see what I and my co-Golden Staters did to AZ, I'll leave you guys alone and stay here.
