So, love our 05 duramax. It’s been outstanding. Towing, driving etc. yesterday I was driving and as I took off from a fresh green light truck “dropped”
Into gear. Kinda like a neutral drop. Then I started noticing what I can only describe as a second gear (or first gear) whine. Not super loud but definitely there and definitely new. When the truck down shifts into 1st or second there’s a whine whether I’m slowing to a stop or feathering gas while truck is still in this gear. Once out of second or maybe it’s first, noise goes away, no problems or sound what so ever. Truck hasn’t jerked into gear again either. I check fluid level, looks good. And clean.

I did a little online research and saw it may be fluid, may be trans requiring service, may be torque converter or may be the differential fluid level.

I looked at the dif and it appears there is a little bit of oil build up on the outside of the pumpkin like maybe the seal is going bad.

So, what do the pros say? What’s my problem? (Besides all the others but in this case specifically). 😁

Thanks.

We can Guess all day.

And come up with all kinna Google search results to support our outstanding guesses.

What you Need is a local mechanic/trans guy, with a good reputation, to diagnose this situation for you.

Maybe @bonesfab knows someone out your direction?

"Clunk"s, "Bang"s and "Kaboom"...much easier to diagnose 🤣

The "whine" could be a mechanical issue, or even a hydraulic pressure. Those have been known to have solenoid issues in the valve body, which would explain the harsh engagement due to line pressure issues. A good scanner may let you know a lot.

Take it to Code 3 automotive in Moorpark, Todd is the duramax/transmission god.

Alright. Just checking to see if anyone is like “yep, know that one it’s commonly known in industry this is it…”
Kinda thing. I’ll take it to a trans guy first. Dave Wilkes in Ventura has a god rep. 👍

My 06 does it all the time, just did full flush and internal/external filters, from what I can tell after talking to multiple allison specialists they all say the first gen 5 speeds are noisy

Line pressure issues such as not enough line pressure or too much?

If the former, some companies make an EPC fooler to keep the line pressure high all the time. Might be applicable to this model year.

Not enough would be sluggish or hanging shifts. Too much and it bangs gears. What I have seen is the shift solenoids getting weak or messed up, so the line pressure may be correct, but the amount or timing of the flow as directed gets thrown off.

How many miles on that Allison 1000? How many miles since fluid and both filters?

That’s too bad. He was so great to talk with and I couldn’t have been happier with any of the work he did for customers back in my diesel days.
He was the best. Had him do two of my Allison’s. Always fun to hang and chat with. Evan from limitless diesel bought Inglewood from Mike before he died and I know he was one of the only guys Mike trusted to recommend outside his own shop.
