So sorry, no respect for seniority anymore. My mom was laid off the same exact way after being with the same company for 28 years. Do you think it has to do with this damn WGA strike?

I always wonder when these people in charge of handing these Letters out think about when it could be their turn down the road. "Loyalty", "Honor"? Right!!

I got a good few months. Won’t say a year covered
Hobbies. 🤷. I’ve been doing what I do for almost 40 years. I guess now I’ll have time to figure what I truly enjoy. Just need a few good years and then the retirement deal.

Just numb. At how fast it happened
Twenty Five years those people damn glad you came in everyday. Only the best last 25 years at same company. You will be welcomed within 1 week at your new company. 👍

Go in on Monday and reapply, tell 'em you now identify as non-binary and your pronouns are Ze, Zim, and Zhir. You'll be rehired with an increase in pay.

Just kidding. I hope you'll be onto a new path soon.

@Mr. C Sorry to hear that you were laid off. I've been laid off more times than I can count being in the aerospace industry. Something always comes up.

I had a shitbag employee and it took months to get rid of him “so he doesn’t sue us”.

But when they eliminate positions, good employees are let go instantly.

That shit ain’t right

I'm still about 8-9 years out on when I WANT to retire... Could go in 2 1/2 if I really wanted to, but that would definitely require a second career with decent pay to remain in SoCal.

May sound a bit silly at first, but have you considered a Physical Therapy Spa where you offer Cryo Treatments, Ice Bath Treatments, or Sauna time/rental? Believe it or not, these businesses are getting popular. Kind of like how all the smaller brick and mortar gyms started popping up all over industrial parks about 5 - 6 years ago.

The other things I've been considering if I were in your shoes...
*Rubbish or Demo removal with truck and trailer
*Airplane or Helicopter Pilot (no bullshit) small time commercial or private
*Boat Captains license and work at one of the local harbors for tours and such (yes, I am actually pretty good at talking to people in real life 😁)
*Class A license then work Transfer Truck type deal out of local company my buddy has been part of for over 20 years (always hiring)
*Of course private security details are an option but not really my interest (there is a ton of money in that industry by the way)
*Real Estate either residential sales or finance side (this would be dependent on when I retire and or if I stay local).

I come up with shit all day long wondering about the what if's with my current career.

We were eating on a patio at Downtown Disney. I noticed the guy hanging around and looking at people. At first I thought he was up to something, then I noticed the ear piece in his ear, and he went and talked to another lady who was standing around as well. Looks like they have a pretty serious security detail down there. The people watching alone would probably make the job worth it.

I got laid off from my Hi-Tech Director job in December at 60 years old. Actually my boss told me one was coming up and I volunteered, got a good amount of severance but had to sign away my rights to sue them. Not that I was going to anyway. Anyways had nothing planned but wanted to take a year off to goof around and figure it out.

Not sure what I want to do next except I'm sure I don't want spend everyday in a cubicle and be on calls every night til 10 o'clock like I was before. That's over for me. I've had some opportunities. There are jobs out there for us older folks with experience and a good work ethic.

To me it's a new adventure, it's been fun being off but I'll be ready to go back to something I want to do for the next 5 yrs or so. Maybe start my own business.

I'm sure you'll find something, it's hard to rationalize after that initial shock but keeping a positive can-do outlook will go a long way!!

Good luck to you!!!

@Mr. C Sorry to hear that.. What are you good at? There's a lot of money to be made online, and guys like me are always chomping at the bit to work JV deals with industry insiders who know the right people but need help setting up the online part of things like websites/lead gen/call centers/closers. If there's something that can be sold online I can do it, but the hard part for us is finding who to work with that will pay us and honor the agreements.

I’ve thought of many things while in my office. Some just seemed to be fantasy or what ifs
I’m taking the next week or so. Just to get my head straight. I never really thought seriously about what I want to do. I just went to work and supported the family.
Now. Without doing something on an impulse action. I can truly think about what I want to do and enjoy. At the same still provide a good lifestyle for the little woman. Really I only a need a few good years. But if I found “that” job. I’d keep working probably.

All those things you mentioned for the most have run across my mind. 👍

That captains license gig is something I've seen work for a young gal friend of mine couple years back. Actually thats her sexy self in my signature pic.... I watched her study and pass test and then she got a gig piloting these larger tour boats in newport harbor. Worked for her a while.

Sorry to hear the way you got ambushed .... not seeing it coming must be the toughest part initially.
My advise is to take at least 30 days before jumping on the "Whats next" thing. After being on that Hmaster wheel gring for 25 straight years you need to de tune a bit. Get out of your head and away from thoughts of next thing just yet.
first thing to do is contact EDD and apply for Unemployment. If you were a Disney guy you're in Ca and its easy.
As advised in an earlier post, Do work your network hard but just wait 30 days so you can process the shock & numbing effect you're in today. You'll see yourself settle soon.... just breath deep breaths and stop thinking about 'Next.' For now... I've seen far too many of my friends do the knee jerk move and get re hired before processing and clearing their heads. You'll have some resentment and will need to clear and deal with that prior to being best self going forward.

Just keeping the feelers out there for sure.

Friend of mine just called. During the Covid shutdown, he moved out of state, with his company's permission. After close to 3 years, they start pressuring him to move back to California. Mind you, both he and another salesman who did the same thing are exceeding all the sales quotas and are the top producers in California. He's one of the very few sales reps that once you buy, he is the go to person for everything. Once you sign up, any issue, service, repair, billing call him, its resolved. Imagine that with ATT, Comcast, etc. Pressure continues to escalate until he threw in the resignation towel. He's at that point in his life where he's working for the health insurance. So, they lost someone with spent 30 years working at a company, over producing, commission based, for what?

I look at Costco and people pay for the privilege to shop there...to the tune of $10,000,000,000 per year, somebody knows what customer service is worth.

I'm not sure whether it's corporate America or the Government that scares me more.

40 years same studio?? Same dept.? Union? What's the severance package?? 60 or older? Second highest seniority and keeping younger employees? You should really speak with your union if you are a member of a union.

I have 38 yrs and over 100k hours. Which should let me keep my health insurance either way until I retire.

If that happened to me, I'm ready, but the scary part is the total change. I've been doing my thing forever, and to just stop and not have that, it's going to feel really strange for a while. No doubt I'll find something to do, but for that initial period, I bet it will feel strange as hell.

Today is very strange. It’s not like any Friday I took off. Woke up to no alarm but time specific to get to work on time. Took a second then kicked back in. Oh ya. I don’t have a fucking job. Layed back down and was able to snooze for another hour

Not sure if I’m still in the shock/ coping time frame. But I truly do feel some sort of peace

That said I also have a huge fear of what’s ahead. But. We ( my wife and I ) got this. She’s my rock

You’re doing all good things; you’re sharing, you’re staying busy and productive, you’re planning, you’re doing things being tied to a schedule prevented you from doing before.

Hang in there, take it one day at a time. Something will your way.

Maybe start a tik-tok on Vodka brands, 60 is a tough number, 40 & 50 you think of how exactly your going to do stuff when you get 60, never been more confused about it.

Haha. I could start out all sober and understandable. Then get to bottle/shot. 52
And be pulling the good old Richie Cunningham from happy days.

Got a lot of things I’m thinking about.

Join the club, may 8 , at 8 am, I got a meeting maker at work for 9am call that day. 30 seconds into the call, the guy says” if you are on this call, your last day is may 12”..Fucking surprise, layed off just like that. And like you, where does a 60 y/o guy find a new job. Doing what I do for 30 years, hard to start a new career.

There are lots of job opportunities and the best place to look is on LinkedIn - it has all kinds of tools you can use to find, apply, track and follow them. You likely can find some jobs you'll be interested in. You will need to create/refresh your resume. Other job sites include Indeed. ZipRecruiter sucks IMO but there are many you can try depending on what you're interested in. Good luck!

Resist all urges to act on anything related to business.... this will be a process with many stages over 30 days.
Anything available to you today will be there in a month buddy.
Know this.... after 25 years at one company you are a valued asset and full on stud.

Also... not reading all your comments. Have they offered severance? Thats the leverage to counter lawsuits.
