"We're going to try to slow down on the camera motion" ---- LOL, I've never got sea sick, but I'm about to lose my breakfast

NoFuckingShit!!!

That seriously had to have been one of the worst Live Feeds I've ever watched. And how convenient was it that they lost "connection" right before the big boat start. Then after everyone has gone by they the feed is miraculously regained, and they try to say that it's because of the boat they're on.

Ah, sure... Maybe if they were somewhere between Long Beach & Avalon, I'd buy that. But they're essentially in downtown LB (with 4g-LTE coverage), so the only reason they should have lost was because they battery died.

If any one from the CSR reads this, here are some thoughts for next year:
A) Invest in a gyro-mount for the camera.
B) We could hear you fine w/o the microphone. When you used the mic, it made everything distorted.
C) Don't have the live feed playing the back ground, it old added to this distortion.

Big boats around the turn.

Avila.

A flame boat.

Nordic.

After the turn Nordic put the sticks down and was pulling everyone in.

(This was reported to me by a boat at the turn)

E) And remove that bitch with the mouth at the turn cam/ boat. Omg that was painful. I pity the poor soul that married that

Lost the feed here moments before the finish when first place boats were less than a rope apart approaching the finish line. Lots of improvements need to be made on the feed. Avalon feed seemed more reliable than the LB. That seemed odd. Congrats to Novice, Kenny Springs, and his team. His first run. An accomplishment just to finish. Very sorry to hear the 80 yr old was unable to finish.

What’s wrong with this picture? [emoji849]

Lost the port motor running from the start to the finish line to anchor up. Bailed out of the madness and made it in to Alamitos Bay on one. Had a plugged fuel filter and now having an issue with one of the injectors that doesn’t want to let the 4th cylinder fire. Oh joy. Back to Newport on one in the morning...

Sucks I missed the good part

Woke up late and started watching it on the live feed until that took a shit.

Ended up taking my dog down there and walking around right as they were crossing the finish line. Was hanging out by the the launch ramp and checked out some of the rigs.

What’s the power in the boat that pulled Ben Gulley?

Hmmmmmmm, I wonder if the cams/feed are volunteer provided and they are doing the best they can with what they have.

Weather was bitchin.
Boate count was down only 48 I think.
Not a lot of Spectators on the QM.
Not sure about the times but they seem slow, think I heard the water was rough.
Rachel Stapleton pulled a 3-peat.
Seems like a lot of dnf also.

Wow what a CRAZY day!!! Congrats to all the teams that competed today Unfortunately Ken was not able to complete the race-we made it to the turn at Avalon and during our trip back to Long Beach Ken went down in the nastiest slop of waves/swells, after 3 attempts to get back up - he was ABSOLUTELY exhausted. We opted for a DNF instead of risking injury. We are SO VERY PROUD of Ken and his competitive nature. He still holds The Oldest Skier record at 77 years old (* he just wanted to raise the bar LOL!!) THANK YOU ALL for your encouragement and be SAFE out there

What a great day at CSR 2018!!. The weather was awesome and the finish was insane. I saw a picture of the finish and there was less than 5' between 1st & 2nd. Hung out with team Nordic at the Maya after the race and the party was going strong for hours. Can't wait for next year!

Did anyone else see the Asshat in the cruise ship fuel barge cross the race course right in front of three race boats? It was one of the stupidest things I have ever witnessed at a race.

Right before I lost my port motor while headed to the finish line this guy called the coast guard on vhf channel 16. They told him to keep the area clear until 12 noon. Crazy that he ignored them and crossed...

Very Frustrating Live Feed!!! (great idea Bad execution)
That did NOT have to go wireless from the boat at the start.
Rehearsals always work well wireless....THEN everyone, the crowd, shows up with their wireless devices and signal corruption occurs!
It could have been onshore wired on a tower or man-lift. That would have helped immensely.
And it would have helped the finish too!
Ideally a helicopter....like a news copter could follow the leaders and transmit back.
The Avalon turn boat also had a lot of noise.....I'm surprised no racers ran into it!!:)

Ben Gully's Boat was listed as a 38' GAC. Huh?

Great American Concept the guy that built them, I can't remember his name but I think it was Eddie something, had a lot to do with the 27, 29, and 32 Lavey bottom. He was hired by Gary Collegewood to build a big enclosed v bottom and killed himself during the build. Got to know him when we raced POPRA, good guy who wasn't scared to experiment with hull design, some of his ideas are standard v bottom designs now.

We took the sled out and anchored up very close to the checkered buoy with 3 other boats. Good times and a great finish!!

The Great American Concept guy was Eddie Morenz. His shop was down on Hazard Street in Westminster. Definitely involved with LaveyCraft designs at one time. Also collaborated with Larry Smith of Scarab fame. Was also close to Michael Reagan when he was doing those marathon/endurance offshore run records around the country.

Certainly a fast hull since he was able to hold off Randy down the finish straight. Two thoughts, either Randy underestimated that boats ability to run hard inside and felt comfortable that he didn't need to put some distance on him outside when the big Nordic should have had the advantage --- or this boat works so well, he could give up that extra 5' even outside and run with Randy all the way ? Ben is certainly a capable skier in either case !!

Thanks for the info on GAC and interesting history lesson

I am pretty sure it is just volunteers doing it. But seems like you have some knowledge about it. You should reach out to the race director via phone or email with some suggestions and maybe even help out? I am sure it would be much appreciated by everyone, including the online viewers that can’t make it! I think they have the right idea but maybe need help with the execution.

Haha! Thanks for the 'props' everyone! Ken Schmidt is the 80 year old STUD and we're looking to have an AWESOME day! Bob Vila' s boat is a 38 Hustler, Jerry Creech will be our Navigator and I'll be the Observer. Velma Schmidt (his wife) will be rooting us on from the fantail of the Queen Mary. By the way Velma is the AMAZING driver when we're running the delta - probably one of the most competent driver I know & she's 79!!!!
Love Ken and Velma, tell them hey for me,used to ski with them back in days and still have a maha race ski hand-me-down from Ken.Best of luck at Catalina.Kevin Kraft

Mike Avila owns the boat, Ben Gulley is the skier from Aus. Mike is real god friends with Arlen and has had a number of bikes built by him.

Thanks Bob
Yes I went down there when he was finishing the plug for the Scarab 27....Still available I'm told. But Eddie is no longer with us. He also refurbed a Spectra 32.
I remember the :
Stylin' Spectra' article in Hot Boat mag. GAC Great American Concepts...hmm I never put the 2 together! ha!
