How are these trucks with the Duramax and Allison on reliability?
Everyone always has something to say about the Fords and Dodge, but seems never much on these trucks.

Do these engines seem to have any major issues?

My buddy loves his truck with zero issues.
I have an 08' with 185,000 and feel the same way.

Are they reasonable on fuel?

Friends new dually 10.7mpg around town when I asked he just hit 500 miles so not broken in no freeway. I am debating gas or diesel for a 2015 reg cab 12' work body. Gas is more now than diesel 2.59 gas 1.99 diesel. But truck price is $37k gas $47k diesel. The gas version the hot mopper I use has a 2015 flatbed gas average was 8.5 mpg.

The 6.6 DMax was initially used in light trucks (Chevy/GMC) in '01. It came directly from a medium truck use from Isuzu. It's the same basic engine 15 years later with a ton of tweaks and improvements. Ford is on their fourth complete engine design in same time period...for a reason. They keep building absolute junk. Ram's Cummins is Quality, and the rest of the truck is catching up.
The Allison in the Chevy is...well, an Allison. 'Nuff said.
Last year it didn't put out quite the power of the Ford or Ram, but there is no guarantee it will be more or less reliable than the other two. There will always be lemons.
Everyone talks about the Chevy injector issue. That was over 10 years ago. My '03 got new injectors under factory warranty in '05 and I have had zero issues since. The LLY (04.5 and newer) and following gens haven't had problems. If you want the GM, buy it.

I have the LBZ, IMO, the most desirable of the series. I haven't really given an in depth look to all of the newer motors but mine was the last year before all the DEF shit so I really don't care for the newer motors.

I run 37x13.5R20 and average about 350-400 miles a tank no lie. Unless I do straight city driving (which is rare) then I'm about 275ish.

I've thrown a 150hp EFI live tune at the trans and she hasn't shit yet. I don't run it on that other than when I haven't driven it in a while but even then no issues. I've towed the 210 to and from Havasu with zero issues and usually can get by with only having to refill once.

I only have 120k on her and she still drives like a charm. All in all it will be hard to get rid of her when it's time for something new cause it's just that great of a truck.

I've got an 11, it's been a great truck once I deleted the DPF and the DEF. The emissions have been the only issues I've had with my truck. Before the delete I couldn't get more than 14.5 mpg rolling to the river, since the delete and and an EFI Live 150 hp tune and a lift pump, I've been able to get 19 mpg running 80+ mpg with 33" tires. Not bad for a 7500 lb. truck with the aerodynamics of a refrigerator box with over 500 hp and over 900 ft. lbs. of torque. I tow my boat on that tune also and at 70 I get 15mpg.

When I had my trans fluid changed by the god of Allison transmissions, Mike Lovrich at Inglewood Trans, he installed a dummy selinoid to maintain trans pressure to keep from burning clutches from the extra power I'm putting down. As long as I can get bootleg smog certs I'm golden.
My only complaint is that I wish I deleted sooner.

I picked up a late 2015 build 2500 crew with the diesel. I've only got about 2600 miles.

I'm averaging about 20-21 mpg but that's mostly highway. Around town its about 15-17 depending on how heavy your foot is. No lift.

We are extremely happy with it. I traded up from a 2500 Chevy avalanche with an 8.1L gasser with 4:10 gears and have no regrets.

My Brother had an '05 and I've had a '07 and now an '08. Not one problem with any of them and all were lifted at least 8" running 37"+ Tires. As other said, after the DPF delete on the '08...BIG difference in fuel mileage and a lot of extra torque. Duramax is all I will ever own!!!

Sorry to thread jack, but you don't come on here much. Did you get the engine change completed on the F30? Hope you start a thread about it.

03 and 09. Never had a drive-train issue.

But the truck surrounding the drive train rattles everywhere in the interior. Both are extended cab versus crew cab and that might be some of the reason.

I hope to see him soon for a rebuild. If you're interested, look at the new trans tunes PPEI just released for those years. I've heard nothing but great things about them.

New Truck Photo.jpg I had an 05 for 10 years and the truck was flawless. It was used to tow our 5th wheel and boat. Not one issue. Sold it this last year and upgraded to a 2015 Chevy Duramax 2500. I can tell you it is an awesome truck. I only have about 4500 miles on it, but no issues so far.

Mike is a crotchety guy, but once you start talking hot rods and motors another side comes out and he's all smiles - be prepared to spend another hour talking to him after he writes you up and you pay him. I asked him about the life of the my trans since I've run the 150 hp tune for about 30,000 miles. He said as long as you don't do stupid stuff the trans should hold. Then he talked about a dummy selinoid in the valve body that will hold the pressure that GM won't do because it will add drag to the trans/drivetrain and they're looking wherever they can to reduce drag to increase fuel mileage. But if this dummy selinoid is changed it will increase the trans temps a little. (In traffic the temps jumped from 140 up to 175, but as soon as I got moving again they went down to 125, but it was 50 degrees out). I asked him if the valve body needed to be pulled to get at the seliniod and he said no, if the pan's off you can get right to it. I asked him if he could do it to mine and he said he was waiting for me to ask. All it is, is a little dealio that fools the electronics thinking that a signal is being sent to the selinoid - kind of like that bypass resistor you can get for the Corvettes and Camaros to defeat the 1-4 skip shift. After he got it together he told me that after doing that I might not even need a trans for as long as I have the truck. That was confidence inspiring. I did notice that as soon as I drove off the truck had a feeling like it wanted to take off faster and in the tow/haul mode I can feel the shifts now. I don't know if it's even related, but my mpg seems to have gone up a little too - so that throws GM's logic in the toilet.

Don't let his grumpy demeanor turn you off, he's a wealth of knowledge and after he's gone all us guys with Allison transmissions will be at a loss.

Yeah, I've read a lot of great things about him on the forums. I was considering going to PAT (Precision Allison Transmissions) but I've been steered away due to customer service? Not sure if it's true or not but Mike has been the go-to on all the forums. I know the newer tunes from PPEI are supposed to increase the line pressure too - not sure if its more of an electronic bypass for the solenoid you speak of or something else.

I'll be giving him a call here either before summer, or after, so well see. Thanks for the input.

I'm on my 3rd one and love them all. had an '05, '11 and now a '15. the 05 and 11 had about 135k miles on each. I had one freak issue in the rear end of my '11 that the dealer said they had never seen or heard of before. Other than that they have been perfect. I wish I could do the DPF DEF delete because they choke the shit out of these things.

I had a sensor freeze (after I got home and shut the truck down and restarted it a few hours later it was fine) that put my truck at a 55 mph max for quite a few miles on a trip back from Park City and it got almost 25 mpg...they are really efficient if you're not in a hurry...I usually am the truck has average 15.0 since new but I have a pretty heavy foot...usually 80.

My dad had a turbo issue with his '13 and had it lemoned but that was pretty much due to the dealer refusing to change the turbo even though the mechanic and service writer were telling them to do so.

His '04 had the crank shaft trigger go out on him.... at 190k no other issues from that truck at all.

His '14 was having issues when towing when he first got it as the replacement to the '13. It would go into limp mode while towing. Then he realized the computer is smarter than he is and to just put the truck in Drive while towing and let the computer shift when needed. Not to try to down shift it himself when going down hill. Absolutely zero issues since.

Best engine/transmission combination IMO, however...there sure is a lot of little expensive stuff that goes wrong on General Motors stuff. :grumble:

Still have your old 05 up in AK. She's still purring along, never misses a beat. We do a 250 mile tow twice a year towing a 8500 lb boat and trailer. I'm always asking myself, is this old girl gonna have cardiac arrest with that kind of wake up call?

Love my 2015 Denali 3500. Just got it back from the dealer as the oil pan was leaking from the gasket, the receiver had to be replaced because the auto transport to the dealer, when it was new, put their chain on the receiver and dented it from cranking down on it so hard and it rusted. They also replaced the black step pad on the driver side running board because it broke.

And this was my 2007 LMM twin turbo with built trans from Mike L at Inglewood Transmission and EFILive by Idaho Rob.

Mines an 06, LBZ, 4x4,148,000 miles. Pulls boat & 38' 5th wheel. Replaced thermostats @ about 100K, a couple of batteries and that's it. Trans has always had Transend synthetic fluid since new. I couldn't ask for a better truck.
16 in town, about 11 pulling the 5th wheel. No injector issues. 😆
