My buddy loves his truck with zero issues.
I have an 08' with 185,000 and feel the same way.
Are they reasonable on fuel?
Are they reasonable on fuel?
I picked up a late 2015 build 2500 crew with the diesel. I've only got about 2600 miles.
I'm averaging about 20-21 mpg but that's mostly highway. Around town its about 15-17 depending on how heavy your foot is. No lift.
We are extremely happy with it. I traded up from a 2500 Chevy avalanche with an 8.1L gasser with 4:10 gears and have no regrets.
I've got an 11, it's been a great truck once I deleted the DPF and the DEF. The emissions have been the only issues I've had with my truck. Before the delete I couldn't get more than 14.5 mpg rolling to the river, since the delete and and an EFI Live 150 hp tune and a lift pump, I've been able to get 19 mpg running 80+ mpg with 33" tires. Not bad for a 7500 lb. truck with the aerodynamics of a refrigerator box with over 500 hp and over 900 ft. lbs. of torque. I tow my boat on that tune also and at 70 I get 15mpg.
When I had my trans fluid changed by the god of Allison transmissions, Mike Lovrich at Inglewood Trans, he installed a dummy selinoid to maintain trans pressure to keep from burning clutches from the extra power I'm putting down. As long as I can get bootleg smog certs I'm golden.
My only complaint is that I wish I deleted sooner.

I hope to see him soon for a rebuild. If you're interested, look at the new trans tunes PPEI just released for those years. I've heard nothing but great things about them.
Mike is a crotchety guy, but once you start talking hot rods and motors another side comes out and he's all smiles - be prepared to spend another hour talking to him after he writes you up and you pay him. I asked him about the life of the my trans since I've run the 150 hp tune for about 30,000 miles. He said as long as you don't do stupid stuff the trans should hold. Then he talked about a dummy selinoid in the valve body that will hold the pressure that GM won't do because it will add drag to the trans/drivetrain and they're looking wherever they can to reduce drag to increase fuel mileage. But if this dummy selinoid is changed it will increase the trans temps a little. (In traffic the temps jumped from 140 up to 175, but as soon as I got moving again they went down to 125, but it was 50 degrees out). I asked him if the valve body needed to be pulled to get at the seliniod and he said no, if the pan's off you can get right to it. I asked him if he could do it to mine and he said he was waiting for me to ask. All it is, is a little dealio that fools the electronics thinking that a signal is being sent to the selinoid - kind of like that bypass resistor you can get for the Corvettes and Camaros to defeat the 1-4 skip shift. After he got it together he told me that after doing that I might not even need a trans for as long as I have the truck. That was confidence inspiring. I did notice that as soon as I drove off the truck had a feeling like it wanted to take off faster and in the tow/haul mode I can feel the shifts now. I don't know if it's even related, but my mpg seems to have gone up a little too - so that throws GM's logic in the toilet.
Don't let his grumpy demeanor turn you off, he's a wealth of knowledge and after he's gone all us guys with Allison transmissions will be at a loss.
I'm on my 3rd one and love them all. had an '05, '11 and now a '15. the 05 and 11 had about 135k miles on each. I had one freak issue in the rear end of my '11 that the dealer said they had never seen or heard of before. Other than that they have been perfect. I wish I could do the DPF DEF delete because they choke the shit out of these things.
I had a sensor freeze (after I got home and shut the truck down and restarted it a few hours later it was fine) that put my truck at a 55 mph max for quite a few miles on a trip back from Park City and it got almost 25 mpg...they are really efficient if you're not in a hurry...I usually am the truck has average 15.0 since new but I have a pretty heavy foot...usually 80.
