We went yesterday and enjoyed the show. You can make it around pretty quick if you want but it was nice to see some of the new hardware. I missed the 3:00-ish get together because the kids were getting antsy.

You like to party? Hate anchors? New product at the Los Angeles boat show!

Anchor Beach Boating drive anchor.

Buying props every year? Need to be a better boater. quit being so lazy and and anchor your boat vs plowing your drive into the ground.

i didnt really understand this product... nothing like sticking some plastic/metal doohickety on the end of your $5k drive and shoving it into the sand/rocks and holding 3000+ pounds with it. no thanks.

I saw this product and thought it was a cool idea. I spoke to the guys for a few minutes and I suggested that the device have an option that also covers the prop so it protects swimmers from getting cut by the propeller. Anyone with lab or cleaver props is always freaked out by the threat of cuts/injury when people are around the back of the boat.

A lot of guys (I'm guiltly of it as well) in shallow water will just drop the drive to hold the boat in a low current situation.. Sometimes what appears to be sand will have rocks underneath, so when you drop your skeg in it can chew it up a bit.. Although I've never experienced it, they have had some instances where it actually damaged props. This is just a plastic condom with an increased foot print, so you drop the drive and it hold the boat with zero damage to the skeg or props..

I would have to imagine the product would be a little hard on the gimble of the boat if used incorrectly or in an instance where the pad started bouncing because of wakes etc.. Overall just kind of a neat little new invention for the sand bar partier.

Agreed, I could see this working in a situation like the lower sandbar in Parker, but I don't think I would want to use it anywhere there are people passing by at speed.

You would have to go to the lower sandbar first to use it.

Jus sayin :)

Those new wakeboats advertised to throw a 20ft wake oughta give it good work out. Outdrive warranty? Drive manufactures will not be impressed. Bass boats use a "power pole" system off the transom. Works well, but it is not their friggin' drive.

The True Wakeboard Boat Manufactures (Nautique, MasterCraft, Tige, MB Sports, Supra, Sanger, Centurion, Malibu, etc.) don't offer boats with outdrives :rolleyes

All the good stuff always happens on the West Coast first. Thanks Dave for the reports/videos. Being a deck boat fanatic, the Howard bimini deal sounds killer for all the reasons Mike mentioned. If I ever have another boat, that's tops on my list. See you in about 3 weeks.

That doesn't make any difference. Believe you may have missed the point. Of course, Nautique, Master Craft etc. don't have outdrives. But when those new wakeboard boats (yes, typically they have a shaft and prop - no outdrive, doesn't matter) that throw the huge wakes come by others holding position with their outdrives buried in the sand/mud/rocks, the stress put on the drives/gimbals etc by their large wakes will not be beneficial to those outdrives "anchored" to the bottom.

Believe in Ariz, CA and per USCG rules/regs you are responsible for your wake and any damage it may cause. Just sayin" . . . . . . Outdrives aren't cheap. This could become very interesting. BTW - I feel burying your outdrive into the bottom to hold position IMHO is not the way to go, in most circumstances. The water would obviously be shallow. A good box anchor off the bow or stern with sufficient "scope" (line played out) will hold very well and is easily recovered.

Just adding my two cents....

Based on the last few years and early reports from this year?s show, I was pretty sure it wouldn't take long to get through the show. But we drove down on Sunday anyway and ended up having one of the best days I can remember. We went in with very low expectations and whata you know, we were not disappointed in the least. In fact it was just the opposite, in part because of one guy whose initials are BT as in Bob Teague of Teague Marine.

I am not one to rub elbows with the rich and famous but it?s hard to deny that Bob is the real deal and operates in a whole different league than most (and clearly my crew!!!!). The point is, Bob must have hung out with Jr and I for what seemed like an hour, just shootin the chit and talking boats. It was somewhat hard for me to believe that a guy of his stature in the boating world could be so humble and stoked to just be hangin out talking boats. Not even a hint of arrogance or "why are you dragin that turd around, you need my waazoo motor in boat xyz!!!" (his booth was right next to the DCB booth!!!).

We were already fans of TM based on the help we received while ordering parts, so it was very cool to just "chill" with the main dude and swap lies about our boats!!!!!

I caught up with my friends from Tilly's Marine and met some new peoples at Boat Bling along with Lee at Performance Boats. I price shopped tow service (i liked the deal Towboat US offers??) and bought some soft ice chests for the new project. I talked to Mike Murphy about his new company Hydrofoil and we even bumped into some potential new Campbell owners!!!

We got there early, looked at almost every boat (even the tug boat things!!!) and didn?t leave until 2:30 or 3, with a stop at Philippe?s near the train station for French dip !!!!! It was an outstanding day, in spite of what most thought was a suck ass show. Come on summer !!!!!:D:D

Cost of going to the boat show with the wife and hitting a 235/70/15 in the roadway on the way home...........1941.00. Shits damn and hell, I didn't even put it in the water yet and boats are already costing me money this year!

Just getting started! The shockwave 21 Skier review will be up tonight! I am going to try and hammer through the advantage 21 SR as well! :). I have to go film a boat in the am and help a buddy out with his boat as well so I can't be up too late tonight.

Shockwave 21 Skier - Anything But Entry Level

IMG_0698.jpg I started a thread asking what the members wanted to see from the Los Angeles Boat show first, and there was quite a bit of interest in the "Entry Level" market. This year I decided to start our reviews off with the 21 Schockwave Skier!

The 21 Skier (and others like it as the hull was manufactured by other builders as well including Ultra, Caliber1, Cobra, and others) was the Industry standard of what a 21' West Coast boat should be in the mid 1990's. They are docile to drive, they ride fairly smooth, and with the "cab forward" design they have a ton of room in them for passengers and a day out on the water. They are a perfect lower river boat, great for Parker, and the occasional Havasu trip so long as it's not a holiday weekend, or a real windy day.

Lets crack the hatch and dig into this particular 21 Skier at the show a little deeper. This one is powered by a Marine Power LS3 (460HP) mated to a Dominator pump by American Turbine. The boat is estimated by the mfg to run 60-65mph depending on load and conditions. (It should be noted that Bob is pretty conservative on his #'s, and with a little pump work there might be some more on the table)

attachment.php

The hatch opened with ease, and I noticed it didn't have the typical "lean" that a lot of hatches will have if they are on a single ram. The bilge was coated with the typical old school "splatter" that matched the green accents throughout the boat. The rigging on the transom was exceptionally clean and considerably nicer than a typical "Entry Level" boat, which is where the title of the article comes from. Everything was held with stainless steel cushioned clamps, and the presentation of wiring and hydraulic lines were laid out in a fashion that's pleasing to the eye. That goes for the idea that the wiring was in looms, the lines were stainless, and the routes taken to the rigging were symmetrical and organized.

attachment.php

On either side of the motor there is a carpeted divider wall, these are typically used so that you could put larger items in the engine bay (lawn chairs, coolers, etc..). In this particular boat they put the batteries on a carpeted board on one side (not sure why they put the extra board in there?), and the hatch ram on the other. My only potential suggestion (which maybe there's some reason I'm unaware of that they did it this way) would be to put the hatch ram, and the batteries on the same side to open it up on one side for more storage. Although it did feel more "symmetrical" with the hatch on the opposite side.

The batteries themselves were in plastic boxes, which lack the "custom" feel, but truthfully are functionally superior to Aluminum boxes because of their lack of conductivity. This technically would be looked down on by most "custom" enthusiasts, but to head that off at the pass, I'm quite sure Shockwave will build you the boat with whatever battery boxes you want.

The wiring coming off the batteries could have been done a little cleaner, but again is considerably better then most other "Entry Level" efforts. If you look towards the engine on the floor you will see white access hatches to the stringers which is really cool to be able to get in there easily. If you wanted to step it up a tad on on your "custom build" you could either ask them to make that portion open stringer, or have them finish out the access hatches with something nicer and run the wiring from the batteries through a nice bulkhead fitting and under the floor. Obviously this would drive the price up, but I wouldn't think that much. (You would also lose storage benefits if you did open inner stringers, but it would look cleaner)

attachment.php

The Pump was painted lime green to match the "Theme" of the boat and looked absolutely fantastic! It was a setback installation with a ride plate, shoe, a "low profile" hydraulic place diverter with stainless lines. I'm not sure about that whole "low profile" deal as I'm not a jet guy, but you can pretty clearly see polished bracket that goes to the nozzle and the hydraulic, and it looks different then the typical installations I have seen in the past. The transom looked as clean as any jet installation I've ever seen.

attachment.php

- Top Side -

In this size and free board range you just simply aren't going to find this much room in this small of a package. (Or variants of it.) This particular boat was setup with two forward facing buckets, a bench in the back and an open bow walk through. That's 3 in the back, 2 in the buckets, and 3 comfortably in the open bow for a total eight fat guys. Now if you don't weigh 200+ lbs, and you mix and match a bit with some "Sandbar/Channel" style girls you are looking at 10-12 pretty easily. (Note* you can order the boat with back to back seating off the buckets adding another two seats)

attachment.php

attachment.php

I apollogize for the bathroom mat on the seat, I didn't even see it when I took the picture. It's obviously there to minimize wear and tear on the interior from people getting in and out of the boat from the stair case.
attachment.php

I have been in plenty of these over the years with the back to back seating configuration, and only in one without it. I believe the best setup (with dual forward facing seats) is the "hybrid" with one back to back behind the driver and on the other side the stainless cooler with the matching seat cushion on top of it. There is just something to be said for this ample amount of room that invariably turns into a dance floor at some point during the day (or night if you are a Parker boater). This area is A LOT bigger then it is in the pic, and roomier then you will find in any 21' boat I can think of presently. Actually to emphasize that point a little harder, it has more room in this area then just about any performance boat I can think of in just about any size range. Another great option that I would strongly consider is a "wakeboat" style interior where the passenger seat back is facing backwards with a wrap around bench.

attachment.php

The boat dash looked good with matching bezels (even though I'm not a fan of guage bezels on straight installations), It had a decent steering wheel in it (which is nice they didn't opt for the 40.00 wheel), and trim on the wheel. (which is an upgrade)

attachment.php

One thing I did notice is the throttle pedal wasn't bolted to the floor. There could be a number of reasons for that including "fitting" the new potential owner to the boat to make sure the pedal is comfortable for him/her. I will say I am not a fan of the "universal" pedal where it can be a left foot or a right foot pedal.. For some reason they always look left to me, but damn near everybody uses them so I'm not going to knock Shockwave for it. I moved that pedal around a bit trying to find a comfortable spot for it on my foot, but where the walkthrough meets the floor it just felt kind of awkward with the pedal that far inwards. (Bear in mind I'm probably bigger then most that would be buying and driving this boat) Personally, even though it'd be way out of the box, I'd opt for a gunnel mount offshore control and use the shifter to run the bucket, or even a single lever deal that actuated everything.

attachment.php

The side panel storage is perfect for wallets, cell phones, smokes, sunglasses, sun block, and other small items you might need to stash while underway.

The textured material they used in the recesses really were the highlight of the interior of this boat. Everything else was "to be expected" or a little plain in my personal opinion. That's more of a matter of taste then quality though. I can tell you as I pulled up each cushion they were well built, and not overly heavy. I have zero complaints about the actual "quality" of everything I saw.

attachment.php

attachment.php

So now I'm going to get to the only thing I actually didn't like about the boat. Underneath the rear seat there is a "box" that takes up quite a bit of the storage room. The box is there to allow the fuel line to go from the gunnel down to the belly tank, but I'd have to imagine there is some other way to do this where it's less intrusive to the storage and aesthetically.

attachment.php

Overall I give this boat two thumbs up!! I have spent too many years having good times in the exact same boat (albeit different mfg's) to give it anything less. It's a great 21'er, with a lot of capability for family or party that is incredibly easy to drive, and has no bad habits.

On a second note it was my little girls favorite boat at the LA Boatshow. She was completely disinterested in every other boat there, but saw this one and she jumped right into it and wanted to go boating, so that has to count for something right?

attachment.php

attachment.php

This particular boat has a retail of 62,450 with a boat show price of 55,850.

(End of RD's report)

It just so happens that Shockwave has a complete build sheet on this boat so we included it in the review. As well as pricing options below it.

Outtakes from the article that would usually never see the light of day. (I generally write articles in the mod section and they go through several iterations.)

This is why you don't listen to Dr. Dre radio on Pandora while writing articles.

The name of the game is room, and how much is there? Being this is a more entry level boat taylored to a younger crowd, I'm going to write this more directed to that genre. The name of the game is room. How much is there? How many of my friends can I take to the lake? How many girls can we fit in this bad boy? The answer is simple, for a boat this size and freeboard it's nothing short of crab boat when you pull up to the sandbar. Tell the chicks to step on in and bring their friends.

This particular boat was setup with two forward facing seats and a bench in the back. To put it plainly 5 guys my size can fit in this boat comfortably in a closed bow version, but we aren't talking about that are we? We are talking about "pirating." The modern day Pirate is no different then the old days except the definition of a word changes. Old Pirates steal "booty" (meaning treasure).. Modern day Pirates steal "booty" too, but we're not talking pieces of eight. We are talking pieces of ass.. And if they are "Sandbar" sized you can put four and a 1/2 across the back with ease, with and one in your buddies lap sitting co-pilot.

We haven't even gotten to the open bow yet which opens up another endless set of opportunities for young guys that are single and looking to mingle.

Why you don't listen to Rob Zombie and the like after Dr. Dre radio incident.. LOL

This part is probably not going to go over well for a lot of people, and I suppose in the interest of professionalism at some point I'm going to have to put my own tastes aside and be non biased, but I can tell you this year isn't the year.

Do you know why I didn't cover the 22 Deck boat? Because this boat flat kicks it's ass is why.. It's the same reason I haven't ever written about the other small deck boats from various mfg's. For hauling people and gear out for a day on the water this 21' Class open bow Vee bottoms just absolutely knock the small Deck Boats out of the equation. They can haul more people, haul more gear, handle bigger water, turn better, pull skiers better, tubes, teach kids how to ski.. I can't honestly think of one category that a small Deck Boat would out perform a Vee of equal size, except perhaps running 100+ mph in which case go get your balls out of your wife's purse, hit the mall and purchase some taste and buy a small cat.

These are some of the side track rants I get on while typing these things.

nice write up to a great looking entry level boat that i completely missed at the show.

i do agree on a lot of things you said. the batteries, hatch ram, and hydraulic trim pump couldve been arranged better to maximize GOOD storage space, and the extra $20 a full battery box costs, could easily prevent shorting out when you toss a metal folding chair, or your anchor with chain, etc back there and help protect the batteries. both of those things the new buyer could easily swap out. but as an "entry level boat" or fist time boat buyers wont even know until its too late... imagine hitting a wave and you easy up slides into those hydraulic lines on the diverter trim pump... oops!

as far as the space, i wish my boat had that much legroom in the back.

theres this random bracket with sender with no 33c cable attached. whats it for? diverter trim gauge?

It is the digital throttle control. If you look at this pic
attachment.php

you see the grey cable on the port side from the foot throttle going down in to the bilge. Shockwave probably disconnected it for the show so the module wouldn't get damaged during the show from people mashing on the peddle.

May have been said but Dave thank you for knowing your boats/stuff. Some of the interviews were clearly saved by your knowledge and great personality. You picked up the interview when the "company guy" dropped it. I'm not sure if some of these guys were camera shy or introverts. Either way they owe you beers big time for saving their company interviews.....

To the companies.. have someone on the floor who is excited to be there, excited and knowledgeable to describe their products... I don't know...maybe someone with personality...

Dave... great job!!!!!
