All of the emmisions shit really fucked the 6.4
I bleed blue and I'd get a 6.0 before I bought a 6.4
My dad's 6.4 blew through radiator end tanks like it was nothing. It was super low mileage which is why he probably didn't experience the problems my fil did.
My fil went through a set of turbos and also had egr issues.
Make sure it has the right Coolant in it if you do buy it lol

I’m about 99.9% talked out of it after this thread. Sticking with a used Duramax. Lol

I didn't even think of that. Good call.

Ok, so now I'm hearing from a few sources the exact same thing you're saying. Something about the whole front end of the truck needs to come off to work on it too.
The cab has to come off for a 6.0 also.

Loved my 08-450. The turning radius was great and it road very smooth, smother than a single wheel f-350.

I blew the oil system in it at 65k that took out a turbo. Ford paid partial still was out 4-5k. Then broke a thermostat housing causing the thermostat to twist side ways. After that and the tech saying once things start going wrong, it just dominos. Sold the truck not long after.

Just a side note that hasn't been touched on, anything bigger than a 1ton has it's own set of problems. Aside from registration and insurance on what may be considered an MDT, some cities actually have laws stating you can't have one at a residence. Not usually an issue, until you get a prick neighbor. I had a de-badged F550, just looked a bit tougher than a 350, but kept me under the radar.

As for Fords...steer clear. My 550 was my last newer one. Had Dodges, now going to try an old Duramax...we'll keep you posted;)

Aside from Ford-Chevy-Dodge issues, how much is the result of the changes to the diesel fuel mixtures....with all the tree hugger changes to the basic diesel fuel, how much is that the problem?

We all know....its “fuel and fire”. With a diesel....its just “fuel”.

My GAS Chevy 6.0 crew cab 2500 HD, with 195,000 miles, has been flawless. Diesel is all about the fuel and the filters. I worked on huge diesel farm tractors for 10 years (off road, tax free, no environmental bull shit or bull shit fuel mixtures), thousands of hours, they never failed to start or do the job.

Just wondering.....how much have these “bio-fuels” fucked up Diesel engines.

I like my 6.0 & 6.4. But love the 5.9. I had a lot of work done to the 6.0. Little to the 6.4 and hardly any to the 5.9. My Cummins does get the best mileage (16-18 with 410), AC sucks. Tows really good.

6.4 has 488 gears, so 8-9 miles per gallon no matter towing or not. Oh F450 has a speed limiter of 81 mph from the factory due to the 19.5 tire rating. Cummins has 136k miles, 6.0 has 193k miles and 6.4 has 82k miles. I would go with a Cummins (up to 2012/no def) or a older Duramax if you’re not going to spend $60k+ on a newer Ford.

Duramax. My 06 now has 214k on it. Did head gaskets & studs preventively at 200k. Towed from Scottsdale to Laguna Seca last week. The week before I had to toy my 36ft gooseneck to OC and pick up my new AC system. Tows Like a bad bitch.

Towing 13k lbs. I’d rather have a diesel.

You don’t want to tow up Chiriaco, El Cajon or Gorman with a gasser and 13,000. I had a 38’ Formula Fastech and a new 2001 Dodge 3500 with the V10. It screamed up those hills at 4500 rpm and got 4 miles per gallon. Great truck but not for towing a big boat. Maybe the new Dodge 6.4 are better with the trannies or the new v10 fords but then you’re paying premium prices on something that will sit a lot.

07 LBZ got just over 90k on her, at 70 average about 13 mpg pulling my 5th wheel, not one problem to date. Had a 03 F250 and 05 F350 both of which blew the EGRs, great running trucks, when they run.

Was involved with the ex's construction biz for 10 years.....

Had 7.3's, 6.0's, 6.4's, 6.7's

RUN FROM THE 6.4's

Every one of them had multiple EGR/blown radiator issues, all hauling loads/towing well within their ratings ranges.
Lemon lawed three, Ford went to court with us on one, and lost.
With so many other choices, no need to gamble on a 6.4.

The 6.7's have been the most reliable overall, of 10 6.7's, one blew a turbo at 15K miles. It was an early 2011 (first batch). Ford covered it and said it was because the truck sat for 6 months waiting for a service body, and the oil leaked out of the turbo. I laughed at that, but the truck went on to 160K miles, no issues before selling. Mine lost a fuel pump at 49K miles, Ford extended the warranty to 120K miles, no issues since.

And for Dmaxes: My buddy is original owner of an 03' Dmax with 644K miles. Plenty of repairs but all diesels would with that kind of mileage. It's at Lost lake every other weekend, still rolling daily.

Like all mechanical devices the 6.4 does have its problems. Of which are a major headache. Stay GM or get yourself a 6.7 Ford. There is a common pattern with the 6.0 and 6.4 in listings. Bulletproofed engine. No engine should have a top end replaced to make it reliable. It should be reliable from the beginning. FWIW my 6.0 still had head gasket issues after studs were installed and a few others I know.

Buy a gas , less stress if your just pulling a boat certain times of the year , gas will the cheapest thing at that point . Take a stroll through a major Ford dealer shop you will see the so called lifted trucks .

FYI, my statement about being underpowered was being referred to being unloaded. It towed ok, but what Diesel doesn't?

Both my 6.7's were immediately tooned and had non vgt chargers put on but I thought they run strong stock unloaded.

This is my old 12, hard to tell but it is spinning the tires the whole way...hopefully swasey doesn't see this ha

Just tuned my 7.3 and holy #$%^ it's so much fun to drive now. Haven't towed with it yet with the tunes as still need to install the pyro and fuel pressure gauge.

For the OP, I agree, go back to the Dmax. Bought my LMM in 2011 with 115k miles and about to roll over 180K without any issues.

This is my good friends 7.3 still has it, it is still the scariest vehicle I have ever driven. It was a 10 second truck at full weight.

Wow, looks like a blast. I played with mine on the 140 race tune and it's pretty fun even with the 315 tires. Mostly it's on the 60hp fuel sipper, which is still much better than stock. The Dmax rolls around on 80hp economy mode as well but will get up and go when pushed.

It is a blast but with the short wheelbase and 1000HP it is wild.
