I'm looking for history/info on this classic ski race boat...so I'm calling on all of you for help!

This is the lightest laid up Schiada flat bottom I've ever seen. Thinnest stringers I've ever seen in one of these, speed coated bottom, recessed strut flush with the bottom, cav plate fins, and the glassed in passenger seat mount is way forward intentionally for a turned around observer seat. Leonard built this boat to ski race, no doubt. Until yesterday, the boat was owned by a fella named Herb who bought the boat ages ago by man who used it for ski racing in the golden days. He thinks he lived in the Yorba Linda area. The boat originally had a big built motor but the owner replaced it with a stock 427 before selling it to Herb. The boat is painted, but there appears to be yellow gel under the paint possibly.

Any one know the history or recognize it? Any one know an old ski race guru that might?

This is a tough one. Schiada flatbottoms were not that common in ski racing in the late 1960s and early 70s. The popular brands were Rayson Craft, Aqua Craft, Hallett and Biesmeyer (very few Sangers, Hondos or Howards too). The only two ski racers of that era that I recall having Schiada flatties were Bill Van Meter (Torrance) and Len Shreenan (Los Angeles). Dick Colburn got into ski racing a little later early/mid 70s with one of Leonard's 19-foot semi vee models. Not sure this helps much.

Thanks for the info Bob! I met Steve Van Meter last year out at Canyon Lake through Marty Harper. Maybe I can get some photos to him and see if this boat looks familiar.

Are the Johnsons, Dick Williams, or The Browns still around?

The Browns yellow and black boat, what was the target like? Stripes? Checkerboard?

Thanks for all the info so far! :thumbsup

Keep it coming!:D

Here's a photo of "Pony Tail" and Van Meter's "Sidewinder", but I'm pretty sure those aren't the boat we've got.

Check in with Tom Johnson in Parker -- very likely that might be his old Schiada flatty.

Ok...I'm also now looking for photos of an old yellow/black ski race Schiada named BaNsHeE. The boat was featured in old Taperflex speed ski ads. Anyone?

Ryan, I posted this pic on my facebook page in my old waterski racing photo album, I have a bunch of pics from back in the '60's & 70's. I've had several other "old timers" send me articles & photo's. This is what I got back from a woman name of Cheryl Merritt Luera............

"kinda looks like a boat ray torres used to own in 86..he was an automotive mechanic out of pomona, held a bunch of land speed records as hoover & torres racing team"

below is a link that should take you to my photo gallery of old waterski racing pics,.............feel free to add any other pics you may have.

Thanks Skyskier for the info...

I can't view the photos since I'm not on facebook. However, we do know that in 1986 the boat was still owned by Herb Williamson. At this point with info I have received, the most is very likely to be BaNsHeE, a purpose built ski race boat that was owned by the Brown Family. I'm still trying to find out more about them and their boat.

The Brown family ? would that be Tom Brown, Debbie Nordblad's Dad ?

I'm not quite sure at this point. They may have had a son named Dirk that skied behind the boat. AFUEL7067 here on the boards has a lot of good info and might know more.

I'm still trying to find out all I can.

Still looking for info on Bob and Dirk Brown or ANY photos of a yellow and black ski race flat called BaNsHeE.

I recently met Tom Johnson and confirmed that his old Snappy Tom flatty is not this boat. I've also seen old photos of Ponytail and Sidewinder. Still lookin' for BaNsHeE photos!

Looks like we may have found the history we were looking for.

Super Snail appears to have been yellow with a blue stripe(exactly what we found under the paint) with a red Superman "S" before the word SNAIL. :skull

The PC98 boat was Larry Dahlhoffs ski race boat. Larry & his dad,Dean Dahlhoff rigged the boat with some help from Dwayne Bolton. Larry started racing the hot boat race after the ski races and later raced the boat in the PC class, now called the Pro Stock class. Larrys sisters, Lauren & Linda, Skip Hawkins, Ron Bolton, Bill Martin and many others ski raced behind the boat. Larry used to run the boat weekly at Golden Ave. in Long Beach. Many great memorys with that boat.

Im currently building this Schiada 18' flat bottom. I believe it was used at lake canyon lake. I've had the boat for over 10 years now its time for the build.

If anyone has any info on the approximate year or any info would be great.

The seats are reversed for a couple of reasons. One of them is it provides a view of a skier by the passenger without the need to crane their necks.
