Picked up this 1965 Hallett 18' last weekend. Had a V-Drive when I was 14 (now 65) and have alway dreamed about reliving the fun I had as a kid.
Has a Casale V-Drive, Bassett Headers and Hall Craft rigging. The stringers are rock solid. I do have a rebuildable sbc 350 I plan to use and get it going this summer if time allows. Not building a race boat. I imagine as the project progresses Ill have a tone of questions and need a few parts to get it going

This boat has fiberglass incased fuel tanks under the seats. Because this is my first go round not sure if I use them or go another direction.

It has a push/pull throttle cable. Need a vendor for replacement.

Contacted the seller and asked if he still had the raw water pump off the old motor. He said he has a Eddie Marine Cam Driven Water Pumps 105-10. Not sure if that’s a good pump or not?

Before I buy new parts I asked him for any other boxes of part I can get from him. Much rather get them from him then have them gust sitting on the shelf collecting dust

Because the motor is mounted backwards in the boat I was told by somebody I need to find a front sump oil pan and pick up tube extension. Any truth to this? And if so where do you find such an oil pan.

I think it is preferred, especially in a high performance boat, but I'm no expert. Dooley makes em, or Milodon, or Armando's or they come up for sale pretty regularly on some of the V Drive Facebook sites.

$500 for an oil pan. OMG
I’m not trying to be cheap but I think I could build my own for well under that. Good thing I’m not in a rush. Still building the motor. Putting a set of vortec heads on it so the press in studs will have to come out to tap for new screw in ones.

$100 for the boat and north of $3000 on the motor so far. I know that’s a small amount on a boat but not my only project

And I do have a wife with projects as well. It’s all a balancing act.

Having the sump at the rear of the boat is extremely important, since when you accelerate, the oil goes to the rear of the boat. A good windage tray is desirable, and one way gates to keep the oil from rushing forward away from the oil pump pickup when you let off the throttle.

Used small block Chevy V drive pans come up rather infrequently if you keep your eyes open.

If you build one, they use some particular welding rod that handles the vibration and doesn't crack. Pickup normally gets mounted off a windage tray stud. You will need a mock up block to make sure it will clear crank and rods, and get to the proper depth.
