I had the honor of friendship with Colonel Ralph J. Evans, who flew a B-29 from Saipan during the war. He and his crew picked up their brand new bomber at the factory in Wichita in early 1945. They flew from there to San Francisco, then Honolulu, and finally to Saipan. He participated in the low level incendiary raids on Japan...on the night of March 9-10, 1945 over 300 B-29 bombers dropped tons of M-69 incendiary bombs on Tokyo, causing fires which burned 16 square miles of the city.
Ralph was just 19 years old when he arrived in Saipan. Can you imagine any 19 year old kid you know doing such things? Those guys performed a job I can't fathom.
