I figured I would share some positivity around here. I picked up this chopped 1929 Studabaker from my BIL a few months ago. It needed some metal work done to the frame, inside door handles needed to be fabricated and a few other things. Andrew at Mayhem Metal Works took care of all that. Now its on to Interior. Her is the car. Had no interior just two metal seats. That got really hot when in the sunlight.

Are far as material we are going with Black leather, suede with white stitching. The sued inserts will have diamond stitching. The back panel is where we will have the stereo. We went with all kicker. The back panel will be vinyl.

Here is the progress after a few days. Pretty interesting to see the process. He is going to make it to were everything can be removed if need be. Hopefully that will not be necessary but you never know with these types of cars.

Ramon is super cool, and I like his ideas. He keeps me and the wife in the loop with everything and wants our input on almost everything to make sure we are happy with the designs. We have never done anything like this before so we are super excited! When we got the quote and timeline he said he was shooting for 20days start to finish.

I dropped the car off with him last week on Thursday afternoon. This was the progress as of yesterday. Getting the amp and 6x9s situated. I like the accent piece around the amp. It will have 2 6x9's in the back, 2 10inch subs and 2 6 x1/2 in the kick panels. I went with the Kicker marine unit, the roundness of it seemed to go better with the gauges and overall look of the car.

This was the progress as of today. pretty happy with how everything is turning out. He is telling me he should be done with fab work by the end of the week. The last thing he is going to build is the sub boxes for the back. They are going to be slightly raised and angled toward the driver and passenger.

He is also going to do all the sound material before final install. The floor is going to be carpet, the side panels and roof area ( what's left of it LOL) will be suede. He is also going to do a Rag top for it. Of course black. He is using some kind of Italian canvas. My initial thought was sunbrella, but he was adamant that the Italian stuff will look much better ( his words, sunbrella is good for boats not this kind of stuff), . After he showed me the material, I totally agreed. He it going to make it removable and I will also be able to roll it up and secure it in the back so we can cruise with the top back if we want.

The one thing we haven't decided is LED lights. It would be accent lights under the dash, and near and around the amp, and rear speakers. We are on the fence. My initial thought was no, we don't plan on taking it out and night, but the wife kind of likes the idea of having the option of light if we want. Any thoughts?

if you like them go for it. if it were me, i would not, i dont think they fit that type of car. but some sort of "courtesy light" might be nice to have.

In closer look I guess you can’t as bases are on the floor
Oh you mean the metal mesh that will provide some comfort and flexibility. Yeah no room for that or my head would stick out the top. LOL

Andrew is a good guy. Have known him for 20 years. Used to be in our 4x4 club. He does a lot of work on our members' rigs. Very a very meticulous and knowledgeable guy.

Yeah Andrew is a good guy. He even made a door kit from a 68 Camaro work on my doors. Little blurry but you can see it below

Here are some updated pictures. Coming along nicely. Back to the seat, sub boxes and more work to the door panels. Still up in the air about LED lighting. Hope you like!

First off BITCHEN RIDE! I am surprised the upholstery industry has not come up with a replacement for particle board for doin things like building a console. I guess they figure, why fix what aint broke. If you ever watch Texas Metal on TV they do the same. Including on intricate door panels. All I think about is how much wieght they are adding to the door. 😳

I thought the same. But I guess the alternative would be plastic molds. But it would be more difficult and costly in tooling and the overall process when it comes to custom applications.

There is a lot of different materials one of the popular is mdf. Light, easy to shape. ABS is another and aluminum.
You can led light it, use a warmer color down in the 4000 and lower to look incandescent.
Coming along nice.

Just a little update. These were from Friday of last week. Below is what the kick panel looks. We went with Vinyl so we could use the leather in other areas.

Project 13.jpg

This is the suede insert on the door panels.

Project 12.jpg

This is a mock up of a panel that will go over the subs much like the amp. They will be magnetic along with the amp so we you wont see any screws.

Project 14.jpg

We also decided to go with the lighting. The wife wanted it, so we got it. There will be a glow from under the subs and amp panel and well as from under the dash. We will probably only us them when showing people the car at night at the house. LOL

Ramon says we might have it done by this weekend. We will see.

Hear some updates pictures. I will need to have a metal frame fabricated to go around the two side windows. Then have those wrapped is suede to clean up the the window area. I like the progress.

Getting so close. I don’t like the suede he did on the sub cover. So he is redoing it. Also its turns out I need a smaller steering wheel as my leg hits between the console and the steering wheel. It’s a 15in Mooneyes. I ordered a12.5 inch Grant and 12inch speedway. Mooneyes only goes as small as 13.5 Hopefully the 12.5 fits. Still some things to get situated but home stretch.

I just need a smaller steering wheel. My right leg gets pinched between the current steering wheel and the console.

Well it’s done!! Picked it up last night. Looks awesome. I still need to have some metal trim fabricated for the rear windows and have this wrapped but other than that good to go. Hope you all like. The wife and I love it!

Mad grins, it's gonna be a great cruiser.

Now you need to find some grunge clothing, grow a long beard, and finish up those tattoo sleeves before you roll. Wifey also needs to dress a little inappropriately and have that dangerous look that scares guys.

You'll have a blast.

😁

Looks great. Still want to see how you get in and out without climbing through the roof.
😁
I will say it is a process. Lol. But I’m just under 5’9 so not to difficult.

Someone asked earlier on the thread who the shop was. It’s The Upholstery Zone in Simi Valley. Ramon is the owner and does most of the work. He is awesome!!’ Check him out if you need anything. He does everything from full custom interior to airplanes and everything in between. He even works with healthcare clinics and doing the upholstery on their stuff. Cool guys. Great work. Allot of show cars. And like he said when we first met with him. He doesn’t fuck around. He does what he says he is going to do.

I didn’t post the info earlier because he doesn't like people to know what he has in his shop for safety reasons.
