Model X I assume? How long is your stop to charge?
Model Y. I’m stopped for about 15min. I usually put extra charge in beyond what it says I need to reach my destination. Never longer than 15 minutes. Supercharging is a wonderful thing.

Getting ready to do a 2400-3000 mile road trip with the family towing are toy hauler. The old 7.3 gets between 6-9 miles per gallon tugging. Gonna be a huge fuel bill....

How’s it pull the boat?

Edit: pretty sure you’re just going to the ramp and back

for me, regular @ my local SCV Costco $4:35 - I pay $4:45 usually at my local station
Burbank Costco $ 4:30
Plus neither are really close to the house (15mi) or work (5mi )

I can see where this would be worth your time. but for me to save $1:20 - 1:50 . I'd rather have that half hour of time.
for me, i usually fill about 50 gallons of fuel with a .35c / gal savings. 17.50 in savings. I go early in the morning no wait. Even if i do wait, its only like 5-10 min tops

I haven’t looked at towing the boat with it. Yes I only have to tow a couple miles. I have a 25’ toon. I have a GMC Sierra for that. So all
summer long it’s going back and forth to the river for that short trip to the ramp. I tow up to Mohave somewhat frequently too.

At the Jackson off ramp in Indio in the Home Depot parking lot there is a Tesla Superstation deal with maybe 10 two sided chargers. Every time we stop in we see that deal 100% full with as many as 30+ people waiting in the parking lot to use one. If it takes 20 min to fast charge then that seems OK to me but most of those cars charging do not have occupants. Off to go eat lunch I suppose.

So how does one deal with that scenario?

$13 bucks to haul ass through a couple hundred miles is well, like free. Once you get to somewhere like Parker then what do you do?

I ask because I'm interested in the process. We need to replace a 02 Yukon and I just don't know what direction to go.

You see people complaining about waiting 2 mins in a line for Costco gas to save $10...

At the charging station you are waiting 90 mins to save $40. It’s not always that bad.. but when it’s bad, it’s real bad.

Buy a Honda Accord and put gas in it. You’ll be money ahead for 100k miles.

If you want a electric car to drive to Havasu or Parker you need a rapid charger at both ends or you won’t be able to get home, or it will be a 9 hour trip that takes you way off course to charge up.

I know this is of no help. Sorry Boys. I'm on a Low budget.
Yesterday, my monthly fill up. 2014 Ram 1500 Shorty, 22 gals, 26 gallon tank. $2.79 with a United/Vons Rewards discount of 60 cents per gallon. $2.19 a gallon. Levelland Texas. 25 gallon limit. $48.18. About $20 a month each for the '88 B250 318, and the '90 G30 454. So, about a Hundie a month for fuel.
I can ride the Spartan Transportation Bus into Lubbock and back, for $6 each way. 50 cents a mile.

28 Gallon tank in the SeaRay. 90 miles to the nearest decent lake, Alan Henry. RT, entrance fee, bait, gas, food, drink, $50 a trip. Come on Summer!

Doesn’t the manual call for more frequent oil changes when using E85?
My manual doesn’t have anything about E85 because I have the 6.2 and converted it to a flex Fuel with parts from the 5.3 Flex Fuel Yukon’s.

I have not heard of changing the oil more frequently when running E85 though.

Maybe @LargeOrangeFont can chime in about it?

The E85 is harder on the oil so you do want to watch that. How much harder is the question and depends on how you drive. It may be worth an oil analysis just to make sure. If it was me I would not run the oil change intervals out as long on E85.

We don't gas up the Yukon at that Irvine Costco I mentioned earlier. At 10 mpg its not worth the effort in miles driven. The fuel lines at our regular costco closer to the house is just nuts. Beside she fills up once every couple weeks now that are kids are grown and we work out of the house. I'm the one whos out pounding the miles daily.

I do it because it makes sense. What I should do it have some 200 gal tank put in my garage and fill everything I have with diesel in Parker AZ then bring it all back and fill it. There are all kinds of problems with that scenario but the CA ripoff just sucks.

After you’re done charging you have a few minutes to get out of the charging spot before they start charging you for parking. So this motivates people to get out quick after charging. Tesla’s are getting popular so there are more on the road now. you are seeing some wait times (sometimes) at locations. In the year I’ve owned the car I’ve waited once in Barstow for about 10 minutes before getting a spot. Yermo just up the road from Barstow is another option but haven’t used it yet. There are approx 6 Superchargerjng locations a day going in the US. Hopefully more station come available on our routes to the river.

When you get to Parker you need a place to charge. Not sure if you have a house there but if you do you simply install a 240v outlet which will allow you to charge at 30mph back into the car. You would need to figure this out for sure.

The Blue Water casino has some chargers however they are not super chargers. Thanks for the info.

When we aren’t having to tow the boat to the ramp these are my energy costs to get back and forth to the river in the Tesla from OC. A Vegas trip in their too. One Supercharge stop in each direction, then charge at the river house for pennies while there. Had an Escalade with the 6.2 before the Tesla purchase last February.

Question.

Barstow being half way to Havasu from LA. And I assume you leave your house fully charged. how much charge do you have left in the “tank” when you reach Barstow? And do you typically fill all the way up while in Barstow?

In other words how much of a “tank” are you filling up here?

I will tell you how one deals with that scenario.. I've used that Supercharger in Indio, it only has 8 Supercharger stations, they need way more. Indio is one of those locations where there's not a lot of options for Tesla Superchargers in the area. Once the car is done charging it will start to charge you and idle fee. So that is how they combat people from leaving their cars parked. You have to think ahead, and charge somewhere else if it's too busy, like Beaumont or Banning. On the screen of a Tesla it tells you exactly how many cars are charging at each station, it streams this info live to your car, the car tells you how many Superchargers are available to use. So, no Tesla driver should be surprised if they pull up to Supercharges at they are all being used. The screen tells you about options to other Superchargers in the area. In two years I have only waited a few minutes to charge, once in Lone Pine and once in Inyokern, but those are in pretty sparse locations where there aren't many options. Traveling to Vegas, you can do Barstow, Yermo or Baker. I always look at the screen, they are mostly wide open all the time like most Superchargers. I like the Jersey Mikes in Baker so I'll just head to Baker and top off, eat my sandwich and leave, then I'll have range to drive around Vegas when I get there. Oh, and Vegas has the V3 Superchargers that charge at 1000 miles per hour.

As far as Parker goes, there are no Tesla Supercharges currently in Parker, AZ. In Parker there are a few "Destination Chargers" around that you could potentially charge from (hotels). Depends of where you're coming from but there are Superchargers in Ehrenberg and Quartzite. If you have a place in Parker there's a good chance you keep your boat there, you can also keep an old truck there and install 220 at your place and commute with an electric car. That would be a great way to go.

For those of you looking at the Ford Lighnting or Chevy Silverado EV, where do you think you're gonna charge those trucks on the road?

People complain about having to stop for a few minutes at a Tesla Supercharger. Good luck charging a non Tesla brand Vehicle. Because without the Supercharger network it's not looking good for you.

Our place is in the needles area so I don’t have the extra haul to Havasu. Yes we leave OC fully charged with about 310 miles. Barstow is 100 miles from my front door. Driving 75-80mph I reach the Barstow charging station with about 150-160 miles left in the tank. My next leg to the house is 150 miles. I give myself 90-100 miles of overhead which means I put 90-100 miles of charge in and roll out of Barstow with about 250 miles in the tank. I end up at the river house with about 60 miles left in the tank. Plug in immediately when I get to the house charging at 30mph back until the car. If I was going to Havasu I’d be topping off at 310 miles at Barstow for sure. Needles has Supercharging so Havasu Tesla owners can stop in there going either direction for probably 5 minutes if they want some piece of mind.

You love to exaggerate, "90 mins to save $40", that's not truthful at all. More like 35-40 mins to save $110... Oh, ONLY on the road, which is rare for most. At home? 4-6 bucks, let that sink in.. No waiting in line, just sleeping, at that is 4-6 bucks is every few days..... That car added on average $80 to my electric bill, no more. Your F150 takes more gas than your credit card will allow. Enjoy that Costco gas line. Just wait until gas gets to be 6 and 7 dollars a gallon. Then 8, you're gonna have to carry more credit cards.

Think of all that time you sit in line at Costco to save a few cents a gallon. It's really sad... Think of all the time and money people spend on oil changes, brake jobs, Smog appointments, transmission service etc.. All the time and money you waste is spread over a few years you just don't realize it.

Wow!! I feel for you guys. I'm sittin' here whining about $75 to fuel my GMC 2500 Dmax, and that was with a $.40/gal discount. And to make the whining worse, my boat storage place just informed me that they are going up $26/mo more on my stall in March. Guess I don't have it so bad afterall.

I think most electric cars will text when they are charged so you know to move them. It's considered very bad form to hog a charging station. I accidentally did it with a Volt a few years back and Karen was waiting for me with few choice words.

You are talking about driving a car.. so am I. A Tesla is not comparable to a full size SUV, so let’s not “exaggerate” the savings. I can drive my car to Havasu for $45 in gas.. at today’s prices. My 3 year old car cost less than half a Tesla 3.

Once again, there is not big measureable “savings” buying a Tesla. Vs a reasonable Japanese sedan.

The supercharging deal is great until you arrive and it looks like Costco 😂

You learn something new every day👍

Think about it.. you can use alcohol based products to clean up oil. That alcohol gets in the oil in your engine and it just breaks the oil down.

You crack me up, I don't want to drive a "reasonable Japanese sedan". I want to drive a high tech American car.

And it's way nicer than a Honda Accord. And I shouldn't have to explain why I bought one. It's really no one's business. But the car has totally exceeded my expectations.

I get treated differently driving my car than driving my Tahoe. In my Tesla I have been flipped off twice for no reason, just minding my own business. Trucks have purposely cut me off. LOF, are you one of these guys with a big chip on your shoulder? lol It's like when I went from a jet boat to a Mastercraft Wake Boat, everyone stopped waving. lol It's been interesting to say the least. People think I'm a Liberal because I have an electric car, I'm quite the opposite.

You exaggerate charging wait times, you don't know because you don't own a Tesla or know much about them. Like I said, I've only had to wait a few minutes, twice. But you don't listen. You just keep saying the same thing over and over. Enjoy your Costco line, you might see me there but I'll be inside buying wiper blades for my car.

If we get into a war with Russia over Ukraine fuel today will seem cheap, if available at all. All Russia has to do is cut their oil sales to the US and we are in deep poop.

Anyone old enough to remember the fuel lines is the 70's and 80's?

Here in Florida, you cannot take a large yacht to the fuel dock. You have to order either a fuel truck or make an appt with The Peterson Fuel Barge. The last yacht that I filled with fuel………. The fuel bill was just over $24,000. It had an 8000 gallon tank, but was not empty. Just some perspective.

The boat above…….. I filled it with fuel, then delivered it to Hilton Head South Carolina along with 2 mates that accompanied me. It was a bad ass 80’ Sportfisher. It worked out great. We then delivered a 48’ Sabre from Hilton Head back to Fort Lauderdale. The most convenient delivery I ever did. Watched a lot of Netflix movies! Lol
It’s funny you bring this up. I’m trying to talk my 13 y/o into going into the coast guard a few years, get out and get his captains license and go pilot yachts and move ships and shit. Lol lol

I hit the Von's market pumps today in Vegas, $3.81 for premium. Punched in my good guy I shop their number, $1 off per gallon! Just $2.81 for a fill up

It’s funny you bring this up. I’m trying to talk my 13 y/o into going into the coast guard a few years, get out and get his captains license and go pilot yachts and move ships and shit. Lol lol
Have him look at Cal Maritime. Have a few friends making good money and overly qualified to move yachts.

We have 30 amp plugs for RVs in our Parker house and pismo house. Home has a 50amp.

If my wife’s model Y every shows up I don’t think taking longer trips will be an issue.

Is the model Y considered an SUV or crossover/car.

Basically could it tow a 21ft river cruiser

They call it an SUV. It’s just a taller version of model 3 (small car).

So technically I guess it’s a crossover.

I wound t down with one. Unless I’m towing a generator to charge it.

The Coast Guard is one way, but not the best way, to have a Maritime Career. There are multiple Maritime Institutes and also The Merchant Marines, that have specific training for maritime careers exclusively. They also have stellar job placement after graduating. The accredited schools also have a year at sea or more on ships and other commercial boats as part of the curriculum. It is by far the better way to go than the Coast Guard, if you want a commercial maritime career. I believe most graduate with a 1600ton license. Just for perspective. If you captain the boats that shuttle oil rig workers to and from the oil rigs……. That pay starts at $800 per day. Only need a 200ton license for that job. Just imagine what you can earn with a 1600ton license? The goal is the Unlimited License that takes years to qualify for. With this license you can be a Harbor Pilot which currently pays between 400k and 700k per year. Really!

There are a ton of jobs right now for those that can be on tugs, barges, research vessels, short haul, Bahamas delivery vessels, etc that have you living on the vessel for 30days on 14 off, type schedule, that pay 700 to 1100 per day. I was offered a job once in which I would have been the captain of the tugboat that towed the rockets back to Port Canaveral after they landed on barge…… I only turned it down because I didn’t want to be away for a month at a time. But what a great view I would have had of the landing or failure of landing.

Ok…… Now back to the high price of a tank of gas. Sorry for the hijack.

FANTASTIC info! Thanks. The only reason I was thinking coast guards is because he talks about joining military. So I was just thinking long term and make that time worth something.

So I did the math on this supercharger deal. The Tesla seems pretty efficient as they should because electric traction motors are 30% more efficient than gas motors

It appears the Tesla recharges at a rate of $11 for a range of 90-100 miles. So that costs $0.11-0.12 per mile.

Now I compare to my sons car a 2021 Civic gasser which gets 35 mpg on the freeway. Using super at today’s price of $4.50 per gallon for gas that costs $0.12 per mile. At the pre FJB price of $3.50 per gallon that is $0.10 per mile.

So as a commuter the civic gasser is equivalent to the pure electric play in terms of consumption cost. Cheaper before Brandon took over. The Honda is half the price of a model 3 and probably a quarter the price of a model S.

Now a Tesla model S is a nicer car than a civic so it’s more comparable to a BMW 5 series or Audi 5. So let’s compare to a pure gas play BMW 5 series. Range varies with a BMW 530 saying 28mpg combined but 33mpg freeway and 540 being 27/32 mpg. So that’s $0.16/$0.13 per mile and $0.166/$0.14 per mile respectively at $4.50 per gallon. The pre FJB price per gallon is $0.12/$0.106 per mile at $3.50 per gallon.

So at current gas prices it is slightly more to drive the 5 series gasser but at pre FJB prices it was actually
cheaper to drive the 5 series.

Plus the BMW and Audi is much more fun to drive….

Now the gas’s guzzling SUV is another deal being obviously more expensive to drive. But the argument is being made to commute using a commuter car then switch over to a truck when you get there. (Good idea actually, I would do the same)

Using the civic model above this is where it is way cheaper to use a civic than a Tesla 10,000 buys you a lot of gas!! Plus a civic will easily go 200k or more miles. Will a Tesla?

I think the truck and suv market is where EVs can excel financially. The only issue is that those vehicles tend to be used on extended road trips so you need the range to get into the honest 350-400 mile range.
