Whats the deal regarding 1 ton dually registration in CA? I've heard that it gets classified as a commercial vehicle and thus higher fee's if there is no bed cover or camper shell. I've also heard that registering it normally with a shell/cover and then removing it can get you some hefty fines as well... I'm looking to pull the trigger on a chevy 3500 dually when one comes available but curious about registering it.

Yes they are high weight fees are most of it. My old one had a camper shell and was registered as a house car, but when I got my newer one I was told I couldn't do that it had to be a full camper. then you had to register the camper so they still go the money. and true if you register it as a house car and take the camper off you can not haul anything in the bed. That said when mine last came up for renewal it was $353 for a 2003. I registered it in Az for $331 for 5 years.

That's correct. A shell or camper will allow you to register it non commercial. Tonneau cover will not. Removing it will also get you a nasty fine if you do get caught. Really, your not looking at that much savings to be honest. Even with a brand new 3500, I think you might save $250 a year on registration. Not worth sweating it for me.

It's all based on weight now. Personally, I wouldn't do it for the little that you save.

Cost will depend on year/weight cert. My 2015 is around $800 per year.

It's about commercial or personal use. If you carry a clipboard and a hammer, it's commercial. I registered mine at full GVW 26000, Cost more money but if you get busted towing a trailer commercially and are under registered the fines are crazy.

Also, If you go through with the trouble and make it non-commercial, when you sell it I heard it's a bit of work to change it back.

All trucks are registered as commercial based vehicles and the registration cost varies on weight..

Like mentioned you can or used to be able to remove this with a shell but you then can't tow or haul anything in the bed.

If it's older it won't be terrible if it's new its crazy exspensive...our 2014 1/2 ton is close to $500 a year

There are a few perks to com. reg. One is that you can park damn near anywhere you want. I haven't read up on it in a while, there is definitely more shit you can do as commercial.

That's what I was told a couple of weeks ago at AAA DMV, all are commercial with or without a shell. They said vans can be registered passenger only with permanent rear seats.

My 2013 F450 was $1100 the 1st year and not much reduction in price in the following years.

Mine is registered as an auto. But I have no intentions of removing the shell. Also don't get caught hauling items in bed. It's also a good idea to get vanity plates so it doesn't jump out that your "auto" registration.

It's more difficult to do now. But aaa was worthless in doing this. I went to the dmv and it was simple and no hassle.

I think you are referring to a camper. So here is CA law in Black and White.

DIVISION 1. WORDS AND PHRASES DEFINED [100 - 680] ( Division 1 enacted by Stats. 1959, Ch. 3. )

243.

A camper is a structure designed to be mounted upon a motor vehicle and to provide facilities for human habitation or camping purposes. A camper having one axle shall not be considered a vehicle.
(Amended by Stats. 1968, Ch. 228.)

New Policy
To establish or retain registration as a passenger vehicle, the owner of a pickup truck
with a
permanently attached camper or camper shell
must complete a Miscellaneous
Certifications (REG 256A), Certification of Vehicle for Human Habitation section,
when the vehicle is initially registered, converted from commercial registration, or
transferred and
already has
body type model PM (pickup with camper mounted).
Human habitation is defined as living space which includes, but is not limited to:
closets, cabinets, kitchen units or fixtures, and bath or toilet rooms.
?Camper Shell? clarification:
By itself, adding a camper shell to a pickup truck does
not necessarily constitute the vehicle being changed from commercial to auto
registration. The addition must meet the definitions for human habitation or camping
purposes. Otherwise, the vehicle owner may be subject to citation from law enforcement
for not meeting the definition for auto registration.
Procedures
Original Registrations and Transfers
In addition to basic original or transfer requirements, the customer must also complete a
REG 256A, Certification of Vehicle for Human
Habitation section, to establish or retain
?PM? status

NOTE
:
Removal of the camper or camper shell will require commercial registration and
weight fees to be due

In Commiefornia anything with a bed is a commercial vehicle - even an El Camino. But to get back at the LEO you can park in any yellow loading zone and there's nothing anyone can do about it. If they give you any shit just tell them that the commercial plate on the back of your truck says you can park there.

Yes its expensive but a commercial vehicle 1 ton or over doesn't require the use of seat belts so you can live dangerously.:D

1 ton have to wear it. this is one of the very few exceptions: (g) This section does not apply to a passenger or operator with a
physically disabling condition or medical condition that would
prevent appropriate restraint in a safety belt, if the condition is
duly certified by a licensed physician and surgeon or by a licensed
chiropractor who shall state the nature of the condition, as well as
the reason the restraint is inappropriate. This section also does not
apply to a public employee, if the public employee is in an
authorized emergency vehicle as defined in paragraph (1) of
subdivision (b) of Section 165, or to a passenger in a seat behind
the front seat of an authorized emergency vehicle as defined in
paragraph (1) of subdivision (b) of Section 165 operated by the
public employee, unless required by the agency employing the public
employee.

Yep. 100% correct. CA registration for trucks is a rip-off.
