06 Yamaha F 150 Four Stroke

River Dave's has been a great resource for some issues I have encountered on my big block so I thought I would try an issue I'm trying to resolve on my F150. The engine starts idle's and rev's perfectly fine however as soon as I shift it in to gear it alarms and cuts out. The issue started after I had changed a prop to water test. Has anyone ever encountered this.

You need to scan it for codes…
My initial thoughts is fuel related problem. I think those engines have micro filters that have to be replaced periodically, like the HPDIs.

With out code… we are just guessing….

BTW… I had a pair of those engines…2006 150s and I loved them.. awesome engines… got the job down and zero problems for me.

These engines have been great. I will try the filter. I find it really strange that I can rev the engine no issue whatsoever RPM's increase as expected however as soon as I put into drive it alarms and cuts out.

You said you changed props. Is that putting too much load on the engine for some reason? If you go back to the original prop does it go away or still remain?

So I changed props on dock and never even got to water test issue just came up when I tried to go out for water test

You have electric fuel pump n fuel injection?
If so you may have an air pocket in the line.

Have you tried another prop?

Remove the prop and see what happens, you may have the shaft binding due to the wrong prop.

you say it revs, that's in neutral right? no load so even a very ill engine will rev in neutral.

alarms? that's overheat or oil pressure

will it even idle in gear?

does the propeller spin by hand in neutral? thrust washer, the proper one installed? talking about the one that slides on prop shaft in front of propeller.

it old so the fuel system will be in need of cleaning and all filters inside VST.

I will try removing the prop and see what happens. Yes it Revs in neutral with no issues , there was no symptoms of this failure prior to changing out the props . Fuel system has been cleaned , new filter 20hrs ago it really does not seem fuel related. I’m confused with the alarm as soon as I put it in gear. It alarms and cuts out. I will head down and check if it spins in neutral and report back. And might as well put the old props back on and see if anything changes.

Forward thrust washers/propeller brand can be a tricky. The thrust wash can stay attached to the old propeller, if prop brands are different, propeller may have pushed forward and contacted gear case.

It was the thrust washer. I’ve never had that happen before. Thanks for all the feedback once again.
