Anyone have a good source for a rebuild or long block. I’m coming up on 300 soon and want to be r

my timing cover is leaking and I think it’s blow by related I’d hate to spend 1500 to fix it all to find out it blows out again. I figure put that money toward a rebuild. I have the usual valve clatter lol.
Pull the oil fill when it's running and warm, that'll let you know if it is major blow-by. The front timing cover shouldn't be that much, but the timing case behind it sucks. I think from the factory both had paper gaskets.

My old 24v had 960k+ on it. Very little blow-by. That was also an early 6spd motor before they "made it better" for smog. A few of my friends are running late motors between 3 and 400k, and seem to run into leaks. A friend currently has his apart doing the o-ring between the adapter plate and block, behind the cam. He thought it was his oil pan. 10hrs later, nope...

Replace as many expensive parts as possible then trouble shoot. .

Most likely injector wiring harness issue as other mentioned..

When we pulled the rockers off there was no visible signs of wear. There is a guy on youtube, a hotshotter PD DIESEL maybe. He runs those 6.7's well over 500k and then sells the trucks. My 04, now my son's, with zero emissions outside the engine anyway, 49 state truck with no CAT, I feel is worth dealing with.

Been forced to learn. First with my own work trucks, now as partial income on others work and ranch trucks.
This is the next challenge for us. We have the same leak and it has coated the underside bigtime over the last couple years.

To the guy you were quoting here.

If you don’t have any blow by the Stealership quoted me about $1,400 to do my front main seal.
It may or may not be worth your time to do it yourself?


I’ve done the water pump on this truck.
It was a 3ish hour job at a lazy pace in my driveway.
I’m not sure I would do the main seal job in my driveway?

I have a few factors involved in the do it yourself or pay department.

First, I am a rare combination of both poor, and cheap. If a repair costs more than my first house payment, I'll try and figure it out.

Second, I have little fear of diving in way over my head🤣 The way I look at it, some guy assembled it, I can figure it out. No matter how you look at it, it's just nuts and bolts. The details of electronic parameters on the fuel control can screw with most people, but once that stuff is out of the way, not too difficult. Piston engines have been around a long time, so the concepts aren't anything new.

Third, YouTube is handy for stuff. Someone else has broken the same thing. Even if not to see how they repaired things, to see what can of worms you're opening.

At 1400 dealer cost, the first thing I'd do is see what their labor cost is. If it's 150-200 an hour, and it may be 1-200 in parts, you can guess how many hours they figure. It's a good baseline to establish time.

I'm in the middle of AZ, and my big projects have slowed. Dave's project is waiting on paint, and I have a 33 needing attention. Lately I work about 3¹/² hrs, mornings, at a shop down the road. A lot of my time during daylight hours is spent shuttling kids for sports or for appointments.

I have heard repeatly from all of my buddys who owns Ram/Cummings… 1 Million mile motors…. Blah blah blah…

Hearing lots of problems on this thread…

What are your expectations of your Ram Cummings ????

Never heard of a Cummings 😂. Problems come about after 288k of hard miles and actually using a truck. It’s also 18yrs old so I can’t really complain. No payments and when I have small issues I replace things with better parts or factory parts that made it the 288k.

Damn motor has to come out or get loosened up and lifted way out of the way to do an oil pan on a 7.3. And its the 1st thing to rust out on my old girl.

Yep...almost easier to pull the motor and reseal everything😁

Don’t keep us waiting, what was the issue?
Failed injector. I had all 6 done.
Just took some time.
Considered the Banks 6gun deal bit would have been about another grand and the bill was painful enough as it was.

Went down to buy a length of 3/8 fuel hose from O’rileys, $4.80 a ft!

I could have sworn it was close to $1.20 last time I needed some.

It cost Moss Dodge and Cummins a long block on their dime.
So, we don’t fuck around with possible fuel related issues round here😉

That’s my worst nightmare with mine it can be catastrophic. I think I will be doing mine shortly just to know it doesn’t take out my motor. Did you go stock Bosch or ? I know diesel injection out of fontana formerly colton does great stuff.
