… Really didn’t know the race history in detail until this mini documentary… for a few years I was up there at least once a week…
Decades ago Living close by a group of roughly 10 of us always had a different road race build and typically 2-3 times a week at night we went up to Mulholland Dr and test and play against any and all takers for over 5 years. They did a movie about it and a few buddies were in it. The look on guys with Exotics when a Datsun 510 blew their doors off through what we called the race strip was awesome. There was a old guy with a Vette (I think his name was Charlie/Vette) and a one guy with a Porsche (I think his name was Chris/Porsche) that were legends up there, when they showed up we all knew better than to think any of us could compete with them. I had 13 Datsun 510's during that time frame that all but 2 were built for road racing. It was some of the best times that is for sure. WOW I just watched the clip, AWESOME. Brings back so many Great memories.… Really didn’t know the race history in detail until this mini documentary… for a few years I was up there at least once a week…
Willie, I can bet we ran across each other at one point or another. Amazing Video loved it. Thanks so much for finding and posting it.… Really didn’t know the race history in detail until this mini documentary… for a few years I was up there at least once a week…
…I hear you for sure on all three of the above… Mulholland… Sunset… And Malibu… probably did them all in excess… more cruised them than raced them…Nice Doc !
I was Having Acid Flashbacks about the Good ol Days up there as well as Sunset & Malibu
From what I remember between Laura Canyon and about 2 miles north to Coldwater canyon.…Where exactly does the clandestine road racing Hollywood portion of Mulholland begin… And where does it end???… I honestly cannot remember…
… I know where the road racing portion close to the Rock Store is but I just can’t remember the Hollywood portion???…
… That makes more sense than what I was thinking… I was thinking from a little bit in from the Hollywood freeway to somewhat before Laurel Canyon???…From what I remember between Laura Canyon and about 2 miles north to Coldwater canyon.
Thanks for sharing. It had to be fun running those Datsuns, less than 2,000 lbs all up and a couple hundred horsepower. Who would have thought the 510 was an excellent candidate for sports car racing? They were badass little race cars. I'm curious, did the 510 stock tub have exceptional torsional rigidity, or was it built in with the rollcage and other mods?Decades ago Living close by a group of roughly 10 of us always had a different road race build and typically 2-3 times a week at night we went up to Mulholland Dr and test and play against any and all takers for over 5 years. … I don’t know if you’re joking or not but it seems like I have heard that story before???… Sometime in the late 70s I owned Dick Lanes 51 Cad Coupe Deville…There’s a turn out at the highest elevation where at night couples would “park” and enjoy the romantic view.
It is named in honor of the late Sportscaster Dick Lane.

It was a blast running them. Their rigidity was actually very surprising, I worked at a shop that did one of the first Turbo systems on the 240 along with doing a V8 swap and the boss and staff were so amazed at how much attention any of my 510s got from customers Especially after they got a ride in one of mine. Their popularity blew up especially after BRE took the trans am series in 71 and 72 with the 510 helping Datsun's 510 becoming one of Datsun's super stars in road racing and popularity. Low cost, super light weight, great road control, ability to turn a stock used $500 car into a killer road racer for under 3-4k back then made them very popular. Thanks for sharing. Bob Sharp Racing and Datsun ruled SCCA production classes for over a decade in 510s and the 240Z/260Z platforms. I found this photo while looking for BSR content, it's a cool shot.
The little guy on the left was quite the 510 pilot and Playboy. It was a blast running them. … A friend of mine‘s kid was putting together a 510 and would tell all kinds of stories of how bad ass these cars were… Unfortunately, this kid was a notorious bullshit artist, so nobody really ever believed him… But typical of this kid he never finished the car… he stayed emphatic about how bad ass these cars were though… I guess this time he was telling the truth …It was a blast running them. I have a few of my road race buddies that are going through the restore process of their 510s. One of my life long friends has gone through the most amazing rebuild I have ever seen or heard of. He bought a used 510, then searched and bought all factory parts for every single part from front to rear including nuts and bolts and he now has a original factory NEW 510 except for the original body and frame that was used. Nissan wants to buy it and put it into their car museum last I heard. I was also thinking of doing one but finding a clean one to start runs around 15k+ now and I really don't have anywhere to use it out here in the Desert. I almost bought an actual BRE 510 but it was road hard and did not want to go through the entire process of bringing it to street reliability. I will post a few pics down the road of some of mine.… A friend of mine‘s kid was putting together a 510 and would tell all kinds of stories of how bad ass these cars were… Unfortunately, this kid was a notorious bullshit artist, so nobody really ever believed him… But typical of this kid he never finished the car… he stayed emphatic about how bad ass these cars were though… I guess this time he was telling the truth …
hundreds of videos of 510s racing all over. My fastest 510 was a 73 with a 350LT1 and a Turbo 400 trans, 280ZX third member, total show car, Hot Rod mag was asked if a V8 can be put in a 510 and they said NOPE, Car Craft put mine in their mag and showed that Hot Rod was WRONG! lol...I made it to Super Chevy Sunday in Irvine front row show, when I pulled up to the gate he said SORRY only Chevys, I opened my hood and he said FRONT ROW PLEASE, but said I could not win anything since it was a Datsun lol. My best road racer was a 72 with a 1.8 dual 40 DCOE webers high compression, close gear 5 speed, quickest road racer was a 71 with a Tilton Eng. Turbo 1.8, used to hit 20lbs of boost so quick but I kept blowing head gaskets so I had the block and head slotted placed stainless O-Rings added a lower lb waste gate and problem solved, the best highway 510 I built was a 72 with a 2.2 NapZ motor 38 downdraft weber and a 5 speed, 135mph and 25mpg lol.… yeah, please post some pics… Because I have never seen one completed… I am assuming there must be videos of them on a road race course on YouTube???… And as soon as I finish breakfast, I am going to look…
That joke goes way back to Junior High SchoolThat's funny true or not!
Funny, one of my auto shop teachers in high school had a 240z and his son had a dual weber slammed 510.kinda off topic but on car topic. my auto shop teacher in high school swore by the old datsuns and mid 70s toyota celica gt coupes. he had a 240 z and a supped up 510 with dual carbs slammed on the ground, the celica almost the same set up just toyota stuff set up for course racing.
Yup, Got to page 16, it's 378 PAGES!!!Fell down this rabbit hole.
