Short version. Wife was admitted via ER Wednesday for diverticulitis. Still there tonight.
She’s doing great but I gather that condition can be a mother fucker.
Curious what our share might be.

I'd start with co-pay, then deductible, then max out of pocket limit (hopefully it's I -network). If you're on a high deductible plan, you'll probably meet the yearly deductible amount with just this stay.

If it gets real expensive just be very firm with both the hospital and insurance that you can’t afford it and they will drop the price. It’s a pain in the ass but my wife is a pro at it! Once you settle on the amount owed you can make interest free payments to the hospital billing department for a Looong time if necessary. Do that long enough and they’ll get tired of the slow payment and offer you a lower pay it off now amount. Get them to drop it to that amount and continue the partial payments and play dumb when they call and ask why you didn’t pay the lump sum then it gets reduced again and pay that amount.

Yes it’s a pain but it probably saved us 50k or more on a few emergency/hospital bills.

Prayers for your wife.
I hope they can take care of this with Antibiotics, if not she may have to have a colon resection which takes about 8 days in the hospital, a couple hundred grand bill unless you have amazing insurance, and a very serious surgery...pray antibiotics helps, ask me how I know.
Deductible and your copay.

I was looking at some of my EOB"S, crazy what some 20 minute office visits cost.

My wife had diverticulitis quite bad, had the operation correcting other things as well and was in and out of the hospital in two days. No problems since. Wouldn’t worry about as it sounds like she has it under control, but there was a lot of pain involved before the operation. Best of luck to the wife.

This is the number I’m kind of looking at, give or take, as far as our share. No idea though. We’ve always had Kaiser until we moved and we’ve never had over night stays.
In the title, you said BCBS the deductible breakdowns should be right on the front of your card.
Probably makes a big difference whether the hospital she ended up in is in network or not.

Tell your wife that Brock Lesnar was a UFC champion while dealing with diverticulitis. Be strong for her.

My wife, same deal one year ago. Two trips to ER, Anthem Blue Cross. We had a $3,500 max OOP for in-network, and that was our number.

My guess is just look at your max out of pocket and that will be your number.

I'd bet on it being the 7,200 out of pocket max, then if it is any less you will be happy.

25k by the time it all shakes out. Even with insurance and max out of pocket.

If anyone reading this thread that needs a resection, I highly recommend Colo Rectal Surgeons of Pheonix. Dr. Stephen Brown and Dr Marc Goldblatt did my wife laparoscopically after 3 major bouts over a year's time. It was a 5- day hospital stay and a little over month recovery, but she been great ever since. We were told usually it never returns because the bend on the left side which is the most common area for diverticulitis is no longer there.

Id probably plan on paying the max out of pocket.

Its true when they say you have to claw and crawl to medicare.

If you were on Medicare that would be $240.

Interesting information, thanks. My wife probably needs the surgery but is avoiding due to some other complications that would arise with traditional cut and stitch surgery. Didn’t know this could be done laparoscopic. Will mention this to her.

I'm sure in Ca there are many specialists also. The surgeon here in Havasu highly recommended these guys because of my wife's age (73) and the recovery is quite a bit quicker and easier. They do many surgeries a week and their specialty is for a non - colostomy outcome.

If a bill still comes in, often the billing people simply didn't submit it to your insurance.
It can be confusing.
We contact who sent it and get that straightened out first before considering paying it.

Yep.
Dr Kaiser at City of Hope may be in charge of the Gastrointestinal surgery and his first consideration is to try and avoid a colostomy bag.
He did my surgery when he was at USC and no colostomy is the way he rolls if possible. I woke up happy.

Other second opinion doctors we talked to referred by UHC all said mandatory, even got the tattoo mark where the shit bag would have been attached.

Do a lot of research, I had an emergency sigmoid colon resection due to Divertics, they tried laparoscopy but had to go in the ole fashioned way and open me up, removed 8" of the colon and stapled it back together, most pain I ever endured in recover in my life, was supposed to stay in the hospital for 10 days they said once you take a crap we can let you go, I was able to leave the hospital in 5 days, roughly 3 months to recover and able to go back to the gym. No bag ever needed thankfully. They said if I did the laparoscopy it would have easily been around a month to recover. Very serious surgery if they remove a section, again do your research for sure.

Thanks everyone for the comments and responses. Just got home with the wife. She seems none the worse for the wear. She was prescribed two antibiotics and a few day supply of some sort of narcotic for pain. She needs to do a low residue/ low fiber diet for three weeks or so. Yippie for her. 😄

Since this is the beginning of the year this will definitely take a chunk, if not all of our out of pocket. Might not though. We'll see.
