Been waiting for this day for a long time! I was lucky enough to grow up doing motorhome trips with my family. We went everywhere in the western US and even up to Canada one summer.

Fast forward to about 5 years ago and we had our first son. My wife and I borrowed my parent’s coach and went to Wine Country RV in Paso and Flying Flags in Buellton. He was only 6 months old at the time, but I couldn’t wait to keep doing more trips.

This year, my wife and I decided to pull the trigger. Problem is, the motorhomes I had been able to borrow set the bar high and exceeded my budget by about 5x lol.

I went back and forth on gas vs diesel. I have at least 40k miles behind the wheel of diesels and feel more confident compared to a gas coach. I still thought I could make a gas coach work. I found a 2004 Pace Arrow in Lake Elsinore with 3 slides. Went down to look at it and was blown away on how clean the interior was. I was a little pressed for time and explained to the seller that I wanted to come back on Saturday to look at it with my dad as well (as he has 30 years experience with motorhomes). My wife really liked the interior and I could live with the exterior. The seller and I agreed to a refundable deposit pending anything major wasn’t wrong. Go down Saturday, look at it and find quite a few more issues… During the test drive, the dash moved up and down about 6 inches which wasn’t right. Worse yet, the overheads AC’s both went out. Come to find out, the seller owned it for 2 years and never serviced anything (gen, engine, tires, etc) and had no idea about anything. I told him let me think on it and I’ll chat the next day. Next day, I said I was going to pass and I’d like my deposit back. He’s since gone radio silent and still no deposit back. People can suck and I’ll deal with him later.

The silver lining in the Pace Arrow falling through is that I knew with 100% certainty, I wanted a diesel.

Fast forward a few weeks, I had been eyeing a Safari Zanzibar on RVT that had been for sale. We have some friends who have them and love them. They’re an entry level diesel, but it checked some of the boxes we needed. This one had an updated interior and 2 slides. We wanted something at least 36’ long and we needed a place for a pack n play for naps and sleep for my youngest. Bummer with this one is that it was in Arizona and we’re in S. CA with limited free time. I spoke with the seller multiple times, they sent me a lot of pics, and even FaceTimed a walk through of the interior and exterior. It looked like it’d fit the bill and we struck a deal.

My dad and I flew out of OC at 6:45 to Phoenix. The seller and his wife picked us up at the airport and took us to the coach. Initial walk through was the same as the FaceTime and pics. The one thing that wasn’t elaborated enough on was the paint mismatch around the water heater (which had been replaced) and I was disappointed with that. Took it for a test drive and it was mechanically great with a ton of power. Also the interior was really clean for a 23 year old coach. Decided to look past the issues in the back driver side corner because it wouldn’t be a huge expense to fix and most everything else on the coach was good (I also had a deposit down in new rear tires to get installed and would need to find a flight home which would have equaled more than half the cost of the paint fix).

We struck a deal, went next door to the title and tag shop to have it registered, title transferred and I had rear tires installed while we did that. Arizona is amazing on how easy it is to transfer title and we were in and out in 25 minutes.

Finally about 12:45, they finished the rear tires and messed up the vanity ring on the driver side wheel. Somewhat frustrating because it looks horrible without those rings, but I had planned on installing Alcoa’s or similar right away.

Stopped and filled up and started driving home about 1:45 and got home around 7:15.

The coach drives way better than anticipated and has more power than anticipated. Definitely forgot all the little nuances while driving it home. Needless to say, I can’t wait to start making memories with the family in this!

Quick stats- it’s a 2000 Safari Zanzibar with a 330 Cat. 39’ long with 2 slides. 69k miles.

I've always liked the Zanzabar's. If you don;t mind me asking, what did it set you back?

Gas Motorhome CHassis are adequate at best. If you can do most of the maintenance yourself Diesel Pusher is the way to go.

Congrats Brandon, looks like a great rig. Memories made will be priceless. Plenty of power to pull a Hallett too.

I agree. About 10 miles into the drive home I knew I made the right decision. We also like to go up to Big Bear and I really wanted something with an exhaust or Jake brake. The comfort level on stopping increases dramatically.

Thank you! It definitely runs pretty well. Enough power for a Hallett or a certain 2014 Sierra as well

Like any motorhome, this is a project pit. We are planning on driving it to Lake Mead this upcoming weekend so had a few things that we needed to knock off the list.

Back up camera didn’t work. These Safari’s had the camera wired to the overhead TV. Since our TV was moved, there was just a coax cable to no where. RVCams.com sent me a new color camera that wires directly into the Safari system and then has a coax to RCA cable adapter and I was able to get the backup camera working.

Next I had a mechanic come do a once over. Recommended the belt tensioner and high pressure oil line be replaced with an upgrade kit. It goes in the shop tomorrow for those.

I had new rear tires installed before I drove it home since they were 2008’s. I paid for balance bags which never got installed and they also messed up one of the vanity rings (which I hated). Plus it absolutely pained me to have to pay full retail for the rear tires since I have my shop here, but didn’t want a blowout. Anyways, ordered polished aluminum wheels, 2 new front tires to match the rears, and all new valve stems. I’m stoked with the look and I think my older boys are too.

It was $130 shipped and the quality is great. I can’t recommend RVCams.com enough. I called them and the customer service team was awesome. Depending on your monitor, yours should be a simple plug and play.

Coach look awesome! Can I ask what wheels you went with. Would live to get rid of the steel wheels and simulators on my 2001 coach.

I went with the Northstar wheels on BuyTruckWheels.com. Their customer service was great as well.

We’ve been working on this thing way more than anticipated, but have checked off a lot of projects.

Upgraded the high pressure oil line
New belts and belt tensioner
Transmission service
1000 hour generator service which requires dropped the gen in this coach
Replaced gold cabinet pulls with black ones
Replacing the ugly green valances with grey/brown
Fixed the hitch/trailer wiring
Replacing the vanity lights with something more modern

One of the last big projects was setting up my truck to flat tow behind it. It’s a much bigger project than anticipated, but my dad and I finished it this weekend. Everything seems to work great and I can’t wait to start using this even more.

Looks good! We swapped out all of the brushed cabinte pulls with black to mix it up a bit. My wife wants to ditch all of the valances and replace with curtains but I am not a big fan and you also see holes in the als from where tehy were mounted.

Did you just have your reuphlstered?

I agree, I like the cleaner look of the blinds. So we’re reupholstering them ourselves. And by we, I mean my wife lol. But she went down and got a couple yards of a fabric on discount and we’re doing the chairs as well. It’s an on going project. Also using the time to reinforce the mounts for the valances since the previous owner stripped out all the holes 🙄

A couple of updates. When I bought this, the previous owner did not disclose the back driver corner was pretty messed up. The colors were off and it bugged the hell out of me.
IMG_5519.jpeg

I had it repainted by a local shop and they did a decent job. Ultimately I would recommend them again and I have to remember this is a 24 year old coach. Also, I have young kids and they’ve already ridden quads and/or bikes into the side of it. So the more perfect I would try to make this would just add additional stress. But I am really happy with the finished product. And also had the front windows tinted.

Thank you! I rarely drive at night so I wanted to give it a shot. I wanted the day time look because I’m with you, everything I own is tinted.

For some reason we pull in everywhere at dark lol. Also 50% of the time I have my trailer with us so we are just about 70 feet lol.

I hear ya, we will see. I love the look when it’s sitting there lol. I’m going around updating all the lights to LED and plan on doing some rock lights underneath. If we start arriving at night, it could change my view on the tint. Even with the mirrors out front, it’s a little bit of driving in a tunnel.
