A guy I worked with just retired after 30 years from the Bay Area to Paradise. I’m trying to find mutual friends to find out how he is.

Sad News.

7:45 p.m.

A fire official says the Northern California town of Paradise has been "pretty much" destroyed.

CalFire Capt. Scott McLean says a wind-whipped wildfire destroyed thousands of structures but he said they won't have an exact count until they can get into the area.

Is it still too hot down there for fires starting? Thought, arresting the arsonist that started seven fires earlier, put an end to these suspicious fires. Sorry for those evacuated, lost homes.

It's bad out there. EDIT UPDATE: PG&E has cancelled the "Public Safety Power Shutoff" outage that was scheduled for today. But, PG&E will still be cutting power to select circuits located near active fires and/or areas threatened by active fires to help minimize potential electrical hazards to emergency response personnel. People located near these areas should not rely on utility electrical power being available to provide TV or Radio news or warnings.

I was just with my cousins from Chico 2 weeks ago. Rebuilding From the other fires was already slow process they were saying. Been years since I was in Paradise cousin had a house there when I lived in Chico.

HV hands for what it worth I got a text from PGE (on there outage contact list) that said they had cancelled, for the time being, the shutdown plan they had in play. According to the weather people the winds are supposed to drop a bunch tomorrow.

I am told that the hospital in Paradise was evacuated, (confirmed) and subsequently burned, as did the McD's, and most of the business district. (Unconfirmed)
I am told the fire started due to a downed powerline along Camp Creek Road, and burned right through the town. Unconfirmed.
I know for a fact 3 ambulances from our town hospital rolled up there and brought patients here during the evac.
A local strike team is there.
I know a couple kids on it.

Power is out all through the area, up to Magalia and sporadically elsewhere. If you have family up there still and they don't have power I suspect it will be a long term outage. Cell towers have been burned, cell service is dicey until you get back down in range of the Valley antennas.
Butte College classes are suspended. Chico schools are suspended.

A couple good links for information...

https://www.actionnewsnow.com/ (the best local stuff from Redding to Chico and Oroville)
https://yubanet.com/ (ignore the whacky leftist commentary, their fire coverage is pretty good)
https://krcrtv.com/ (Redding ABC affiliate)

Our irrigation water is shut off for the winter. It gets going here I am screwed.
Tomorrow and Saturday we will be doing loading the 5er again and getting ready.
Until we get some serious rains the days the north winds are howling scare the crap out of everyone living in the Sierras.

My friend Kelly was evacuated in Paradise. Hope he has a house to go home to. This has been a rough few years for him as his daughter recovered from cancer and then it reared it's ugly head again and she required more surgery.

This was yesterday and it has only gotten worse. Look how far the smoke stretches. That big lake to the right is Tahoe and just at the bottom of the smoke is San Francisco just to give you an idea how big it is.

I was just watching a live report from Paradise and it looked like it was midnight. They said the fire has grown to 70,000 acres.

My parents and other assorted family live in Orland, that would be right across the valley in the center of the thickest smoke channel. It is supposedly like night up there in the middle of the afternoon yesterday. Very surreal when it is that dark like early dawn and yet the horizon on three sides is bright orange.
I just looked up on some of my equipment in the area, we had 9 W/sq.m at 3PM near Chico. Normal sunlight for then this time of year is between 5-600 W/sq.m Mid summer we would be pushing or over 1000. 9 is just stunning.

I was coming to work about 45 minutes ago and snapped this one on Florence Ave going over the 5 freeway. Not sure which fire this is but it looks like a shitstorm too.

That picture is crazy. Thanks

I live in the bay and the smoke is really thick here right now. We are 200 miles from that craziness.

My girlfriend lost her house in Paradise yesterday, the whole town burned down. :(

A few citizens did not make it out, burned in their cars. :( Horrible. Godspeed to all the pets and people who did not make it out.

Thank god she had her little girl with her when it all went down, Paradise burned down in just a few hours.
