SOLD

265 V8, powerglide, as best I can tell...65K original miles. Purchased from the original owner. Runs and moves under its own power. Years ago got a set headers, edelbrock single plane intake (on a 265...lol) and a holly single feed carb...all installed by the lady who was the original owner and worked at a parts house. Has an electric fuel pump too, Unical 76 whilewall tires, new battery and a new master cylinder. Zero rust. Back seat looks new, headliner looks new...supposedly original...front seat is usable but torn. Dash/interior paint is green-ish.
$13K

I think this thing would be great to get running and leave it just as it is. Wish I hadn't seen this..

It runs! Fresh oil change too. If I keep it, I’d throw a 3speed trans in it, disc brakes up front a go to a dual circuit hydraulic system, throw some tires on it and maybe a Mexican blanket front seat cover. Then it’d be perfect.

I've wanted a '55 post since I was a kid and was thrown through the windshield of my uncle's in 1961 in a near accident. I was 5, standing on the front seat, someone ran a red light, Uncle hit the brakes and I catapulted through like a missile.

I'm going to take very good care of this one.

Just a peak inside, and thanks to @lbhsbz. I was great to meet you and your wife.

Last tune up on the '55 appears to have been in '72 but the cool thing is the name the mechanic gave the car back then, 'Andi's Racer'. Sounds good to me and the name will stick.

Awesome car!

Is the yellow on turquoise combo factory? Seems odd, but I wasn't even born yet so maybe it was a thing back then.

My BelAir and yes it has turquoise interior.

Congrats on the car old rigger, glad to hear it went to someone passionate about 55's. I'm also a huge fan of that year, at one point I had a 56 post car. Only bought it because some friends told me a guy had a 55 for sale. Went with cash in hand, when I got there it was a 56. Said F it and grabbed it up, we were in Hawaii at the time. It was kind of rough but still fun to cruise. I know it's a pain in the ass but would be cool to see the progress. Stoked for ya, enjoy!!

Such a cool car......55/56 are my old time favorite and this one seems like a great car to start with.

Honestly i would clean it up have the front seat upholstered and throw a 800hp turbo ls with a full reverse manual valve body t400 at it...lol

I agree! maybe not 800 HP but....
Ran across a guy with a '57 2door hardtop that looked liked it was in about the same exterior shape as this one. He had redone the interior in leather and had a healthy sounding motor. (Did not pop the hood). I asked when and what color he was going to paint it and he said "I'm Not". He said I would rather drive it than wax it! Changed my way of thinking about these older cars.

Absolutely.... Nice interior/sound deadening and some tunes and then make the frame and engine compartment look fresh.

Polish and buff whats there maybe new chrome if needed but skip the 20k paint job. Everyone i know that has a classic with nice paint just wants to talk about or show the car and are too scared to drive them.

So I finally got the car home and was thinking about what you said so I ran the numbers. Paint code is 631 which is India Ivory/ Harvest Gold,
interior, light green/beige. As far as I can tell everything is original, no repaint except on the tops of both front fenders where someone took off some mirrors and shot a little paint. Interior all original, needs new foam and new upholstery on the front seat, the rest is excellent. I'm sure the back seat stitching will go away as soon as I start using the car. Door panels and headliner are super nice. Carpet is even good but brittle and the padding under is shot.

All the lights, heater and radio work. Horn, no work.

It's a 210 Del Ray ( I love that Del Ray name, reminds me of surf music). I kinda knew that from my limited knowledge of '55s but it's nice to know for sure. Car was assembled in Oakland, Ca.

Last registered in '91. 74,XXX on the speedo. All original undercoating still is great shape, none peeling. No rust anywhere that I can find, floor pans, trunk all look new.

I can't really start on the car right now as I have a few other projects to do but I couldn't stand it and got out my clay bar, a little 1000 wet/dry and some compound and hit a few spots on the hood and rt front fender just to see what's what. Stains all over the car from I think some kind of tree berry, nut, flower, I dunno.

I'm not a patina guy, infact I've disliked that whole trend since it became popular. Dislike the phony patina even more. Having said that looks like I'm going to have a original patina car for a while, at least until I can afford to get it painted.

Original valve covers in the trunk as well as a set of NOS dog dish hubcaps. My neighbor is having a '55 2 door wagon restored and its a 3 speed overdrive car. He wants to get rid of all those parts from the pedal assembly to the fly wheel and I'm just the guy to take them. When that cast iron 'glide takes a shit, I'll be ready.

Paint's super thin on the tops of the fenders, I'll have to go lightly.

Thats looking really nice! The hard thing will be figuring out how good is good enough and then having the fortitude to stay there and not go down the rabbit hole. Easy to say but hard, for me anyway, to do. As we all know the hole is deep, takes a long time to travel and is expensive. As you pointed out, at the end of the hole is a car thats too nice to use.

Congrats again on the new ride and please take us along as you get her up and running.

Lack of deep pockets will keep the project a driver and I'm perfectly fine with that. It'll be clean, but no where near the quality of yours. I'm just tickled I actually own a '55.

I completely forgot I have a '64 327 that came out of my folks Impala wagon they bought new, that might find it's way into this car. I've been saving it for a early to mid 60s flat bottom but that probably won't happen.

I have a friend that has a '64 Rivi that's probably the nicest one I've ever seen and that's including Jimmy Vaughan's, and he won't drive it much for fear of someone scratching it.

Super nice.

Those are getting hard to find in that condition. I bet that car gets more attention at a car show than some of the high dollar cars. Very Cool!

If it has a crankcase vent behind the distributor and it is a 265 cu inch it is 56 or later motor 55 was the only year that did not have that vent into the intake valley

Leave the exterior alone and enjoy it.. Perfect survivor car. A few updates underneath to make it safer and drive better and drive the shit out of it. I would have bought this just because how cool it is.

I haven't run the casting numbers on the block yet but I think someone installed a later front mount sbc, it has a canister oil filter and a downdraft tube on top of the block by the distributor. From what I've read the '55 265's had no provision for any kind of oil filter, supposedly that appeared on the '56s.

Went out last night and started to clay bar some more paint and I was thinking of how Larry Watson rubbed out his first flame job with Ajax. I figured if its good enough for Watson it's good enough for me so I used some Ajax on a scotch pad. Much quicker with great results.

they did have a canister type oil filter just no provisions for a crankcase vent if it has this it is a later year engine and you are probably better off hopefully a small crank journal 327 ci

thanks
This must be a later block as it has a filter in the normal sbc position only it's not a spin on, just a small diameter canister but not like the '55 optional canister filters mounted on top of the engine. I've had several cars with the on top canister. My grandpa told me they use to use a roll of toilet paper back in the day when they couldn't afford a real cartridge filter. That sounds kinda shaky. lol luckily I never had to go that route.

Spent a little time last night on the bumper and front end chrome. It'll be fine for a driver, looks great 10 feet away. Rubbed out some more paint too, happy so far with the results.

Also picked up an early Edelbrock CB4 manifold, I believe this was the first manifold they made for a SBC. Engine has an 70's Edelbrock Tarantula on it now. I like the dual plane better and I'm going for a late 50's early 60s look anyway.

I'm going to lose the bumper toppers and eventually all the emblems, bird and have the hood peaked...way down the road.

it was dumb luck that I saw the post so quickly after Pat posted the ‘55 for sale. I had just marked my truck as sold about a minute after he started his thread. Sent him a pm immediately and being a man of his word, that gave me first refusal.

I still can’t believe I own a ‘55. and one in such amazing original and rust free condition to boot.

Spent a few hours on the grill the other afternoon. Cross bars are a little rusty but over all it turned out ok.

'63 plates are in great shape, still wearing every year tag up to '91.

'67, 68, 69, 71 and 72 were on the wrong side under the month sticker. Given the era, maybe drugs were involved. Plate polished up, looks brand new. Front plate has led a tougher life, cleaned up ok but has a few scars.

Hope to start buffing out the paint this weekend.

Well, there's not a whole hell of a lot of paint left but it's looking better than it did.
Doing the easy parts now, later will have to do the small areas by hand that my buffer won't get.

Man, I haven't rubbed this long on something since I was 12 years old. 95% finished, just have to pull the bumpers to get to the paint behind them then I can begin buffing and then get some wax on.

Oh, when I was 12 I block sanded and buffed out a tri-hull deck mold at Tahiti, my first...get your minds outa the gutter.

So what ever happened with this?

Got busy with something that's taken a little more than a year from working the 55, still not outta the woods yet. Before I stopped this is how far I got. New springs, hubs, shocks, carpet, old truck seat cover that I fitted on the front seat, seat belts. Replaced the stock tail light lenses with a set of Lee's and wired in the reverse light along with the brake lights. New tail light chrome, fronts too and head light rings. Few other little things.
Just this last week started back on it with a new gas tank and all the crap that goes with it, SS fuel line and going to try to get the new pinion flange seal in too. Then moving up front I'm dumping the PS, new fuel pump, going to rebuild the carb and install a better manifold than the open plenum with a vintage Edelbrock C4B with I think was their dual plane for the sbc plus it looks right for the era I like.
Gave the 55 to my son so he's helping me to keep plugging along. He's married with 3 little ones so I hope they enjoy the hell out of it.

Also made up little bracket and going to run my dad's old plaque from '52.
I tried to copy the slant of the rear window if for no other reason, I like it.
Just looked back over this thread and I repeated myself a little, sorry bout that.
