My buddy Neil bought some wheels for an older bimmer he’s building.. got some kinda crazy deal on them.. lol.

Got them home and figured out why he got the crazy deal, the hubs don’t clear.

Not a problem, ole Dave has a solution for that.

finish pass .100…. Which normally is creep up but the boring bar is a little dull.

That said spiral chip that isn’t hot.. if you were gonna make some comment about how I’m doing it wrong.. I look forward to hearing it because it doesn’t get any better than that.

Put that new machining center to work and interpolate those holes.🤣

it goes the other way too, bought a set of wheels and the guy said they were for my year... but they were actually for a newer model so the hub bore was larger. Luckily I was able to find some aluminum "hub centric rings" to center the wheel. even though the lug holes were tight it vibrated like hell without em.

I honestly can’t imagine a scenario where it would be faster CNC then manual
For four of them..

I keep Hearing about it?

It’s three passes with a big criterion and longest part is getting zeroed l.. which with an edge finder takes about 90 seconds..

Without making a bunch of them I think manual wins on this one.

That’s awesome you can do that reminds me of a time we tried (unsuccessfully) to redrill adapters for a set or Daytons. Slapped em on and dove down the street. Oaf, sketchy!!! Free handing them, not so great. Lol

If I knew how to use this fucking Haas I bought for Tyler I’d make you a set of 14’s. Lol.

From Germany. He told me a number but I didn’t believe it for 14’s. He said they were about 4K?
Yea...my son had a set of BBS awhile back. Those in the scene know. They didn't end up working out for him. I think he made money on selling them. Lol.

Your lathe will swing 17"...right? Why do lathe work in the mill?

By the time I fixture up the shit in the lathe.. I can literally bolt to the mill in two seconds.

Why go lathe?

Even with the decent sized buck chuck I am either gonna have to pull the chick (which I threw all the plates away) or make some kinda crazy step up to hold the lug nuts in which case I would need studs etc.. (which qty 8 and above I’d go that route)

Stack it rack it done.. take the vice off bolt it down and indicate it on the quick with a dro an edge finger and /2 calculator and move
On.

Entire thing was 2’ish hrs?

Ever watch this guy on you-tube? He runs Cutting Edge Engineering. No CNC in his shop.

It would be on a Fadal. FO, find center of circle. L94 Mill boring subroutine. 2 min setup, 30 second run time on the first one? Sub minute setup on the next 3.

You'll be surprised how much you DON'T use the Bridgeport when you fire up the Haas. I kept a Bridgeport and one of my cnc's when I retired and very rairly use the Bridgeport. A simple program for that hole is about 10 lines of code and set up is a couple of minutes. Trust me, you'll dig using the cnc once you learn it.

Yep, hard to hold a wheel on a lathe without a BIG chuck, indicating the wheel, preventing clamp artifacting. Also your surface speed will be slow because you can't spin a wheel like that super fast unless you have a death wish 🤣

My lathe swings 26" and i'd still do that job in the knee mill with the boring head every time.

Yeah, indicating on the mill really doesn't take long. Just depends on what you feel like doing sometimes. LOL

I modified a set of TRD forged wheels for a guy who wanted them on his OG Toyota pickup that was getting built at Yota Masters. Had to open up the bore about 1/8" if I remember right. My shop has some big equipment and our lathe chuck had plenty of swing, so I went that route.
Did a set of 20's years ago that a guy was trying to put military tires on. Had to machine the bead lip off. Back then, the shop I was at had the perfect size VTL, so I went that route.

I've been a machinist for about 25 years now and it always seems that everyone has a "better" way, but at the end of the day, the job got done and the wheels fit!

Most of the time, we actually make the machines to do the machining...

Back in the teenage broke days we used a torch to open up the wheels!! When I got a little extra $$ I upgraded to a Dremel tool.

Nice work, that's how I would done it!

Also quick tip since you mentioned bimmers: the brakes like it when the wheels are torqued down to spec. For some cars it may not matter, but I noticed on my M3 that the brake rotors were developing black hotspots. The knuckleheads bolted everything down with the air gun. When I loosened and retorqued the lugs to 85lb/ft or whatever it was, the hot spots dissapeared after a few hundred miles ;) Quite sensitive things

You say you can do all of this in sub 6 minutes. I’ll take that bet.. lol. I don’t think you could fixture the wheel to an empty table much faster than that? Unless you have something pre setup.

Dude! YES! I could’ve wrote that word for word! Except swapped cutlas for Impala. Although I do like a nice cutlas on D’s. 😂😂😂 I’ve been telling her for years “just be prepared, I’ll own a 62 rag Impala at some point. And it’ll be lifted on Daytona” of course I always point out the bagged impalas on 20’s that are more rodded but she’s hip to my game. Lol

I think we need a Donk/lowrider section here at RDP. (I KNOW IM NOTHING LIKE THE TYPE) but there is something about impalas cutlasses and monte carlos that I have a soft spot for.
