Who likes it and whats your favorite? I was corrupted by my lady and her family a few years ago. They have a one acre micro vineyard with four different varietal’s in Paso Robles…nothing commercial which makes it even better. Had a Grenache the other night that was amazing but enjoy a good Viongnier and an occasional Rose as well. Flame away all ya want …I’m a Macallan lover so I can take it.

I love wine.. To the point I built a mini vineyard in my back yard, grew my own Cab Sauvignon, and made my own wine.
Some of my buddys are the Wine Makers in Temecula area, one is probably the leading Professor of Viticulture in SoCal.

A wine that most have not heard of, that is truly amazing and very expensive… Petite Verdot.. OMG. Its probably my favorite, when I can justify affording it, Petite Verdot is only made by a few Vineyards, those that make it get high dollar for it.

But I enjoy pretty much all the Reds, and the non sweet whites for the most part.

I no longer have a vineyard, but I still make wine using the wine kits. Made at least 4 Kits this year. Have one sitting on my wine fridge now that I am about to start. Its a great hobby and not all that expensive to get into.

Makes great gifts in the holiday seasons.

I too was turned to the wine side. Absolutely love a good, smooth red.

My favorite varietal has to be Malbec. I love a good GSM as well.

The occasional port with dark chocolate is incredible also.

Favorites over the last 25 years are Silver Oak Napa Cab and Rombauer Chardonnay (my wife drinks only white). I worked for the big French oil company Total early in my career. The French know their wines and they were blown away by Silver Oak when we introduced it to them.

That’s what started the disease (along with a fine Monte Cristo Cuban stogie).

I love a nice red with a meal!
Justin - Justification or a Trefthen Halo w/ a Hot Rod ribeye makes time stand still…

Although it’s not a refreshing drink like a Cold beer after cutting the grass on a summer afternoon.

I like the heavy reds. I really just know my favorite cabs.

If someone who knows wine well gives me something similar to a cab, I'm good to go.

I love the cab Caymus has.

My favorite local wine here in Temecula is probably Bottaia’s Montepulciano. I love lots of others too though 🤣

Love a good Malbec! Picked up a bottle from that place across from the speak easy in Paso…can't remember the name of that place. So many tasting rooms in Paso now its hard to keep track. Serial really stands out for me…they have some of the best whites around. Anarchy down the Hwy. has big bomb reds!

Another outstanding winery is Babcock off the 264 between Buellton and Lompoc(Lompton). For all you So. Cal people this area is a good alternative to driving all the way up to Paso. Los Olivos has a plethora of good tasting rooms. Stay the night at the Sky View Motel (expensive but not disappointing), they have an incredible restaurant/bar and room service…great romantic weekend spot. One more thing, if you like Rose` then Babcock is a must! Babcock’s “Love Garden” Rose` is incredible.

Anarchy is owned by Christian, the wine maker and former partner of Cypher and 4 Vines before that.

I didn't care much for wine prior to living in northern Italy. Their wines were very good. But, the region is in no way wine snobbish. Often, very good restaurants would serve some excellent wines in a carafe. Bottles were available. But, seldom did you see the locals with a bottle of wine on their table. I like a dry red wine. In Italy, Sangiovese was a good choice.

My favorite Viognier is from Demetria. Honestly haven't had anything but exceptional wines from them. Small batch winery in Santa Ynez.

Yup, never met the man but he makes the best big reds in my book. The “Drop Dead Legs” is the best Grenache I have ever tasted. Currently waiting for the best occasion to open a 2019…ya just cant have one glass.

There are far too many good and affordable red wines. I have four grades of red wine: garage wine, everyday wine, good wine, and can't afford it too often wine. The garage wines are end-cap wines to drink instead of ales when working in he garage (duh). Everyday wines vary. I have two good wines. One is Toasted Head Merlot (which is no longer available), it had a hint of chocolate and coffee. The next is San Antonio's San Simeon Merlot, very affordable and a great wine. The last is the 'do I really want to spend that much for a bottle of wine.' The most recent is Bourbon Barrel Rebekah from Alapay Cellars in Avila Beach, CA. My father-in-law and I were on a road trip. It took us at least two hours to fine this place. I walked away with a case of three different reds and a much lighter wallet.

I'm definitely not his biggest fan. He's a bit too tool-esque for me, but my uncle loves the guy. He does make some great wine though.

My favorite as well is a good Malbec. Really been liking the GSM lately.
Love a great Syrah or cab.

Some of Paso wineries we like. Ecluse. Artiste. Midnight.

Daou is beautiful no doubt. Just don’t get the hype. But that’s why there is so many different ones. Also not a fan Tobin James. Yet it seems to have largest following of all the wineries.

I could take you there blind folded . . . . That is a great wine. I have been a wine club member for probably 10 years. Along with Kelsey winery up the road. We love going to Avila Beach.

I have about 150 bottles of wine right now. 5 wine clubs.... Alapay, Kelsey, Frisby, Sextant and Tobin James..... I need to drop one or two... but that is a tough decision for another day. White/Red any bottle opened is worth finishing.

Check out Cinquain on the Northeast side of Paso. I have NEVER had a bad wine from there. Absolutely fantastic blends, malbecs, Pettit Sarah, etc.

My cooler only holds about 40 bottles and it's full. I have some very special wines but have not had that special occasion to break one open. Maybe when I retire the second time.

Fallbrook country club is now Monserate winery and just happens to be one of my customers.

Wife and neighbors think the wine is great!

The wine dude or whatever you call them is a really nice guy. Fun getting an inside look at how it all goes down. What they are building over there is really really nice!!

A little know fact is that Mexico has a wine country. It's called Valle Guadalupe and is about 20 minutes northeast of Ensenada. They have been making wine in the Valle for 200 years and have some phenomenal wines

If you are ever up for a great weekend, try a 2 night 3 day stay at a B&B in the Valle. There are quite a few 4 star restaurants and there are more wineries than you can tour in a weekend.

I was surprised by the $1 billion number, and went looking for Dauo's annual revenues. In 2022 it was estimated at $15 million.

So the sales price was 66.7 times annual revenue. How does that even come close to reality? How can 400 acres of grapes and a few buildings be worth a billion dollars?

I get that the Australian buyer regains access to sales in China through Daou (an almost 300% tariff on Australian wines was enacted by China because the country claimed a lab leak caused COVID, sales fell 97%) but damn.

Went to Paso last week. The talk of the town was Daou Wineries (great wine, BTW) sold the company for $1B!
Daou is one of my favorite wines, Their soul of a lion is great, but pricey. They also have a decent $25 bottle of cab for everyday drinking. Prisoner wine company is also good, and make a great red blend.

A little hint to all. Local Costco's sell wine from local vintners at local Costco stores. Stop off at the Costco in SLO, and they have pallets of Daou for about $20 a bottle. Justin is $21 a bottle, Opolo is $19, and a small unknown great vintner is Chronic, and those bottles are about $15. I probably saved $200-$300 by just stopping at Costco.

Chronic isn't small persey since the brothers sold it to a big conglomerate a few years ago. The original story of Sofa King Bueno is still a great one and kind of indicative of the original laid-back attitude of Paso wine making.

I do think the family still owns peachy canyon though.
