Why Is It So Hard To Buy A Truck?

I'm still on a mission to purchase a 19 or 20 Ford Raptor and thought I found one at Tustin Nissan. We agreed on price and things I wanted done prior to picking it up. I had my own financing so I don't need to go apply for their credit, I just needed a purchase order then I can have my credit union wire them the funds. We had been there for almost 3 hours, I told them that we really need to get going as our 7 month old puppy has been in her kennel for the last 6 hours. They said that it was a requirement for the customer to fill out a credit app for any purchase. Fine, I'll fill it out. They came back with a bunch of payment options and I told them I'm already financed, let me give you a down payment to hold it and I'll come back tomorrow morning and finish all the paperwork. The F&I says okay and I give him a check for $10,000, shake hands and the wife and I walk out. Then halfway to the front door some fat bastard, child molester looking individual who is the sales manager says that I have to finish the paperwork or they won't hold the truck. I told him that I've got 10,000 reasons to come back tomorrow and finish the purchase. He said that there is so much activity on that truck that they won't hold it without the paperwork signed. If someone shows up here 10 minutes before me they'll have to sell it to them. I looked around the dealership, my wife and I were the only ones in there for the last 3 hours we were there. I told him well, with all that traffic you're getting here and if my money isn't enough to hold it until tomorrow morning, keep the damn truck. I refuse to work with a dealership that treats its customers like this. Give me my check and I won't bother you anymore. I got me check and left.

After sitting in traffic for an hour and calming down, I called and talked to the F&I guy and told him that I'll still take the truck as long as that fat bastard is not part the process. I was told he wouldn't be in until noon. Okay, fine I'll be by in the morning. The next morning we got down there in pretty good time so we had about 45 minutes until they opened, as we sat there waiting for them to open, I played what happened the night before in my head over and over. The more I thought about it the more pissed off I became. A few minutes before they opened I decided to say screw it, they didn't want to sell the truck to me, they can keep it, fuck them.

I walked inside and saw my sales guy and the F&I guy and told them that they were very professional and I would like to deal with them under different circumstances. I can understand if pulled $50 out of my pocket and asked them to hold it, but with the amount I put down, that should have carried a little more weight. I told them to let the general manager know that the truck was sold, but their sales manager screwed that up. I did send an email directly to the GM to let him know what happened, but still haven't heard anything back.

The search continues....

I've got pre approval at our credit union for a car we ordered. We pick it up next week. We will see what scams they try to pull on us to get us to finance through their preferred lender. I'm ready to walk out even though we have been waiting for this car and have a deposit down.

Part of the issue was that you were pre approved and had financing. This was going to cost them thousands in additional kickbacks, fees and such. In many cases there is more money for the dealership in financing than there is in the direct sale.

I hate all this BS. I don't put up for it either. I guess I'm "fortunate" that I have to buy so many vehicles for my business it gives me multiple experiences with one sales rep and he knows what I will and won't put up with. If I only had to buy myself and my wife a car I'd never have the deal I do with my salesman. I get loans through my CU, Navy Federal Credit Union and they write me a blank check (up to certain amount that I got pre-approved for) that I fill out and sign at dealer and that's it. My salesman knows not to ask about financing, I never actually go in the financing office, just do all paperwork right at salesman's desk. I don't usually wait for the car either and hardly ever test drive them. I get in and out with paper work and car/truck walk around in about 45 min and I'm out. Send driver over next day to pick up the car/truck after they wash it plate it and fill it with gas. I don't have time for that monkey motion, I need to get back to the office so I can go on RDP.

Let me sum it up for you this way, as good ol Joe Biden would say "I got two words for you, It's a sellers market"
I cant wait for the shit show to end, the dealers have had it way too good for way too long!
and yet they all still cry "poor me"..... I have can get X Plan pricing through Ford, they hear that and straight up tell me they won't sell me the vehicle! Tell me to order one and wait the 6 months, time to start expanding my search out of state.

WJ is right, the dealer gets a % of the amount financed, 1-5% of the amount financed. Sometimes the dealer has better rates, if they do save some money, if not use your bank. You are more likely going to be able to negotiate a better deal if you use the dealer financing, you can always refi at your own bank after. Some dealers here in AZ charge 1000 more if you don't finance through them, shows right on the websites. All dealers hate when you come in with your own financing, you almost always get a better deal if you use the dealer financing, or play along that you will.

Granger Ford in Iowa was completely awesome.

New Raptors,Super Duty and Maverick are impostor very hard to get but if they have anything else they give very good pricing.

I think it's starting to turn on regular production trucks, not raptors, my local chevy dealer can't fit another truck on their lot and pricing everything below msrp.

I told them the rate my credit union is giving and if they can beat it or match it I'll go through them - they were 2.5% higher. That must have upset the sales manager, that I was ready to buy, but with my own money and financing. As of this morning the truck is still sitting there.

I think the tide is starting to turn on used trucks. Been watching a few and the dealers are starting to drop them prices on them since they’ve been sitting for a few weeks or more.

I don't plan on buying cars in SoCal anymore. Maybe it's the excessive size of the SoCal consumer base, maybe it's SoCal attitudes, maybe it's the outlandish spending habits in SoCal, maybe it's just the way business goes in SoCal. What I do know is that the experience is shitty.

Always marked up and always a bunch of BS added on.

August 2020, Hemet Dodge sold me a widebody Scat Pack Charger. Basically told me here's a pretty shitty interest rate and here's a shitty add on package for like $3k that we're not willing to take it off. If you don't like it, the car will sell itself in under a week. Now, the widebodies were new then but this car was still in transport.

Bought my truck in Utah and drove it home. $500 deposit, flew in, everything done in an hour, I'm on the road by 11am back to SoCal. Great interest rate. No games. This was all in June 2021. SoCal was all $5,000-10,000 markup.

I had a line on a new Trackhawk in late December out of Utah as well. Would've been a $500 deposit and no nonsense. They said that they could find transport too. Didn't end up buying it. Salesman has continued to send me used Trackhawks since then.

Now I have two orders in for CT5V Blackwings (race for an allocation). One in Beverly Hills and one in Iowa. Beverly Hills is unorganized and I have to follow up multiple times for any type of response. Iowa contact seems more knowledgeable and provides detailed updates. He even texted me when just moved to a new dealership.

My new truck order was supposed to start production 10/31/22, now got pushed to 11/07/22. Not a big deal, but hoping to have it before the end of the year. They say 4-6 weeks from the production date is realistic for delivery. We will see.

I do see lots stacking up with inventory, so it'll be interesting to see what kind of deals / incentives / interest rates are available in December.

I was at Anderson yesterday for a service and on my way down noticed that all the dealers lots are filling up with new inventory, quite a bit more than just 3-4 months ago. Definitely seeing the shift even in Havasu.

True.

Which means they should be transparent if there’s a cash-price and a finance-price.
Haha fat chance 🤣

I think we’re beginning to see the franchised-dealer business model swirl down the drain, especially for domestics.

Could be.. but what do you do as a MFG? Buy out dealers? Do you take take orders and deliver them to dealers giving the dealership a kickback, and let the dealers continue to do service and financing?

Are there that many people willing to wait for cars to be built to order?

That is just Buick.. That brand is gonna go by bye. They still need a network of service/delivery/I need a car today/ centers. GM is hugely redundant in that aspect.

Just a sign of where it's going. That article even touches base on a reduction of Cadillac dealers.

I think they're all looking at the tesla model and liking it. There will still be some dealers, but a lot less of them.

When I bought my truck (used) about two years ago, the salesman was actually very easy and honest. I had financing and it got messy part way through due to someone at the bank being stupid. I talked with him about financing and mine was better. We did discuss him doing the financing and he said a good option was to let them do it if my bank kept screwing around and then refi the loan to my bank and better rate. The one thing he asked straight up was to make three payments before i transferred it. At that point their organization got fully paid for the loan and paperwork. If I did it earlier then they got nothing.....
I really appreciated the openness on it.

Well of course.. it is more money for them selling "direct". The Tesla model isn't scalable beyond the densely populated coasts, and you can't go to the mall and buy a car today.

They also know this.. but there are simply too many dealers in many markets.

which part? the production date being pushed back or the dealers lots being stacked with inventory?
Production dates, then the length of time it sits before being shipped to your dealer.....

They were playing with you, trying to see where they could hide/force you to take addons because you had your own financing.

It should take less than an hour if you have cash or your own financing. Fuck that dealer.

Last couple cars we’ve bought has been tougher than usual. All pre-negotiated on line, 100% done deals. Both had dealer extras tacked on that weren’t on the quote but were “standard”. IE Ceramic coating, Theft, etc. Turned what should have been an hour transaction into several hours of haggling. More of a pain in the ass than anything. They always seem to be shocked when you have the quote with you. 🤷‍♂️

yeah definitely always plan on being let down lol... unfortunately

on the plus side, used car prices are dropping... especially noticed it on used raptors... so I could just end up with one of those.

They make money on financing plain and simple it's easier to sign the paperwork and pay it off the next week.

You might even get a better deal out of them with them thinking they are making money on the financing
Will your credit union still consider the vehicle new after it's been driven for a week ? If a product's price is being dealer adjusted, it might matter.
I've had deals try to push what you're proposing, but I've complied with filling out the paper work, but almost never accepted their financing.

It used already. Rate would be the same.

He needs to make the dealer think he is going to take their financing and negotiate the truck down.

Then next day pay off. Done.

It took awhile, but I learned not to get emotional about a vehicle purchase. If it doesn’t happen, just give it time, something better usually comes around.

I’m waiting.
So am I on a Yukon XL Ultimate.

We just went through this recently. We decided to sell our 21 Silverado Trail boss to our son whose truck got totaled a few months back by a hit and run. I was originally looking to get back into a Ford, but really didn't want or need an F-250, so I decided to find a F-150 Tremor. I looked basically everywhere west of Denver. Never found one with less than 5k ADM.

My wife and I went to an Angel game, and Chevrolet had a display there and had a new ZR2 Silverado with the new interior. So, I decided to find one farily loaded with no markup. There were a few inbound or at dealer lots, but all the CA dealers wanted 5-10K ADM. I found 3 of them in Arizona that would sell with no ADM - A white one at Gateway Chevrolet in Avondale, a blue one in Kempton and a blue one in Douglas. The dealers in Kempton and Douglas were super nice and easy to deal with, but my wife decided she wanted a white one, so that left Gateway in Avondale. It was apparent right away that this was a volume dealer with layers to go through. We made a 'deal' that we would pay sticker and no add ons and would finance through GM Financial for at least 90 days before we paid it off. This was Thursday and they told me they would not hold it until Saturday even with a deposit. I told them I would show them a plane ticket, but they still would not hold the truck so I told them the deal was off. They called me Friday morning and told me they would hold the truck for us if it was not sold by 3:00PM to anyone else on Friday, so I told them to pound sand as our planned flight was at 5:30 over to Phoenix. Eventually, they called back after they realized they had 2 identical white ones and would hold it until Saturday morning. So we flew over, spent the night in Phoenix and took an Uber to the dealer the next day.

The only other dealership that I have been in that felt like Gateway Chevrolet was Longo Toyota. They must had 20 tables of deals going by 10:30 on Saturday morning. I am guessing that Spanish is a must for working there as most of the deals were being done in Spanish. We test-drove the truck and it was great. Then we waited for about an hour for finance, and that took about 15 minutes. While we were waiting, they washed and filled up the truck. When we went to go setup OnStar after the truck was washed, I noticed the first of 2 dents- bummer. The dings were not visible in the sun, but in the shade, they were visible on one front and one rear fender. Since it was Saturday there was no one from their body shop to take a look, so they just told me to have a paintless dent guy fix it when we got home and they would pay up to $200.00.

After we got it home, we washed it again to get the bugs off and my son found another dent in a different fender. I called a paintless dent guy and he came out a few days later. Unfortunately, after he got looking at the truck, he found several more. We think it got caught in a hailstorm while being transported as the dents were only on the 4 fenders at the same height. The roof and hood were perfect. He charged me $400.00 for the truck and it looks perfect. I had never seen how that was done, but really interesting. I had him fix one on my Audi as well for $75.00 and it took quite a while for that one as it was on a crease.

I sent the copy of the invoice to our Gateway salesperson and fully expected them to issue a check for the original $200 they had agreed to. No, they sent $400 although they sent it to our Havasu address instead of San Clemente, but no big deal. It took a few calls and texts to find the check, but I was rather impressed.

So far the truck is good. Same 6.2 with 10-speed that we had in the Trail Boss, but with slightly stiffer suspension. For some reason, it also feels like a larger truck as well.

This is a YUGE deal for those that use the calendar year write-offs (not that it’s hard to have a PO and use that 😉).

So far the truck is good. Same 6.2 with 10-speed that we had in the Trail Boss, but with slightly stiffer suspension. For some reason, it also feels like a larger truck as well.

I watched a review on the new ZR2 Silverado, do you like the step bed/second door? I thought it was a great improvement on the Ford version, even though it's the best design feature Ford has ever come up with IMO for the Raptor/Tremor etc.

I thought that was a killer feature, plus it pretty much owned the F150 Tremor it was compared to in all aspects unless it was max weight towing.

I bought my Tacoma from one of those used car lots I swore I'd never buy a car from...because they had the only one I could find with what I wanted. I've bought a few new trucks...from the dealership I worked at. I have say, this "shady" used car lot was as easy as could be.

I showed up, the sales guy met me at the door and asked "you're the guy that called about the tacoma right?"...threw me the keys and said go drive it.

I came back, we chatted about it a bit, he wouldn't budge on price, so I left. I called him a week later with a cash offer of $2K below his asking, which was fair to begin with. He called me back 10 minutes later and said come get it. Zero pressure, zero push to finance through his people, just easy. I'd go back and buy another car from him.

Every new car dealer I've dealt with has been a headache.

Is it a law to fill out credit report to buy a car in CA? If so why?

Are you referencing the Silverado tailgate step with the drop down top section that folds into a step ? Having had two Ford's with the step tailgate and really liking and using that feature frequently, there's two things I do not like about Chevy's.
One --- there's no handle, I like the handle, a lot. I realize the Chevy step is lower, but especially for stepping down, I want a handle.
Two --- You have to remove your trailer hitch before you can use the top drop down section or it's fold out step. On my Ford I can easily use the step with the hitch installed.

This all is why the wife deals w the vehicles. More then once I have wanted to fight in a car dealership. I can’t stand the cockroaches when u first pull up. When we were younger obviously had to deal w the back and forth thing, but now we are established, basically find what we want, Straight contact with manager, few emails, go down and pick up… spend maybe 2 hrs at dealer. Maybe.

We're ordering a new truck.
All I hear from friends in the business is don't do business with Arab owned dealers.
Seems to be true.
Fucking shenanigans and bullshit and nonsense galore.
Yeah,, I said it.

We're now ordering from a locally owned dealer because of the above and we've never heard back from Photoglu.

Wife bought an EV this year and Arab owned dealers were total fuckstories. Marked way up above MSRP, added options she didn't want, sale pressure for other services,,, ridiculous. She walked.

Wifie contacted a locally owned dealer in Valencia, got a hold of a nice Irish salesgirl, got a terrific car at a great price.. No Arabs, no markup, no dog and pony show.
