On this day in 1983 the flooding began on the Colorado River. The flood waters extended from an over-filled Lake Powell, extended down through Mead, Mojave, Havasu and down through the famous Parker Strip.
Several bars, restaurants and houses were damaged (including Sundance, Fox’s and Road Runner).
The Parker Strip never quite regained it’s glitz after that. Prior to the flood there was a LA Times article claiming the strip was going to be the next French Riviera (LOL)

We just completed our Parker Strip Place and all of a sudden the strip was closed because of the high water. We were ok because our place was 6ft above the high water line.

Since you are familiar with the rio hardy… that flooded out Jessie mosqueda’s camp also. It happened again somewhat in 1993 or 1994 when the salt river dams almost topped over with a freak spring wet rain in the white mountains that let the whole snowpack go in a few days time. Everyone had all there furniture on the roofs.

Spent most of July filling sand bags. Saved our new double wide we just installed on the river in April 83, what a summer. Before they closed Parker, we were partying and jet skiing in the living room of the house just below Fox's.

Yep. Went to Hoover dam to see it twice. Amazing amount of water over those gates. The vibration was incredible. Remember it like it was yesterday for sure.

They also had the gates at the top of the overflows up 100% with from looking strait on , water level looked 5 to 8 feet above gates.

they used 4x8 sheets of plywood and angle iron to raise the top of Glen Canyon dam (Powell)

For a while in 1983, sheets of plywood were all that kept the mighty Glen Canyon Dam from overflowing

Lake Powell wasn't always half empty. In 1983, the reservoir filled nearly to overflowing, saved by resourceful engineers and a lot of concrete.

We uses to camp at Bonelli Landing. There was nothing better as a kid then going over the dam with your parents. Especially at night.

I still remember the mist in the air by the overflows.
Pops rented a fish/ski boat at Callville bay, because Mead wasn't playing nice with a bubble deck Eliminator.

I remember the 4th of July weekend that year, the Parker Strip was closed, but Roadrunner was open. There were so many people on the bar that water was coming up between the slats of the wood deck. That was a good time.

In September of 83' wife and I were enjoying our honeymoon on Lake Mead in a Houseboat out of Echo Bay. We spent one night several miles up river from Pierce Ferry.
Water was up to the sandbags protecting the restaurant at Temple Bar.
During our last night in the Echo Bay hotel after disembarking the House Boat, monsoon squall that had kicked up during the afternoon slammed the place so hard the docks were breaking away. We watched from the hotel room window as the crew struggled against the raging wind to disconnect the fuels lines to the fuel dock before it got torn off.
We were sure happy we weren't on the houseboat that night, although we'd fought a similar wind the night prior beached across from Temple Bar, with engines running and turned hard over to keep the lines from letting go.
I could easily count on one hand how many other boats we'd seen on the water that entire week exploring from Echo to Pierce and back.
That was an amazing, unforgettable honeymoon.

I was in Parker that year with my Grandpa, brother and my Grandpas friend and grandsons, we were camping at Bransons for the Dove opener. It was crazy going to the rivers edge and seeing how the places that were on the water the bottom floors were all flooded windows broke and full of mud.

Parker was in a bad way the summer of 1983. Most of the riverfront bars, restaurants and motels were closed. As I recall I got a call from Dottie Randall (Parker Chamber of Commerce) and Don Rolapp (Parker Tourism Committee) asking if I could help bring back visitors. After several meetings I proposed organizing water ski marathon races in early March. Not sure if that was going to bring participants and some spectators to the area, but it worked. The Parker Water Ski Marathon races in March have since become a Parker annual event, still supported by the NWSRA.

Many native populations thrived and died based on the availability of water. My brother in law was a big wig archeologist in Arizona and has told me about the history of many "native" societies that abandoned their homes due to drought.

You look at the alluvial fans from the highway, where you can see the sediment washed down from the hills. Or notice the way the land has been pushed and formed by water flow when flying overhead and you can see the power of nature.

Rained every damn weekend in Elsinore. The Hangar had 8 feet of water in it. Houses floating in the lake. It was a mess. On the other hand you had drought. it all appears to be under control today.
