Some things ya learn the hard way. I finally got around to installing these lightning headers on my Howard. Turns out they are 36” wide and my boat was set up for 34” wide so I had some interesting pipes made for it.

Now my engine cover doesn’t fit. I would do a whole new interior but I need to replace the fiberglass tanks next winter so it makes more sense to wait and do the tanks first.

Do you guys have any reasonably priced recommendations in Havasu or Parker to do interiors/engine hatch? I’d like to widen it to go from gunnel to gunnel. I need the engine covered up so it’s safe for my kids. Kinda a budget job since it’s only for this season.

Thx!

So far all of these guys are acting like what they do is brain surgery. There is a guy in Fullerton who will build me a whole new interior for 3500 bucks and these guys want 2K plus to modify the engine cover. Am I missing something here?

Typical Phoenix

Well first wow motor looks way way better. Second, could you unbolt the top piece, then set cover on and mark it, then cut the sides to clear the headers only the headers imho then go and pull vinyl off the top piece and add little side boxes to that top cover (just plywood and wood screws then use some resin to seal it.) Then take that top plate to any upholstery shop and have them simply do in white for now!

There’s a lot of guys that will do things on the cheap. The end result is what matters. For that interior done up right, resin’d side panels with pockets / cup holders etc it would normally be 5-7 to modernize the whole program. In LHC depending on where you go it could be a little more!

I am good at many things, but I suck at interior/vinyl work. LOL! Hell it took me 3 try’s to spell it correctly.

I'm right there with you and know my limitations, hence why I've never attempted interior/upholstery... And by best guest my work would probably look just "ok" after the fifteenth or so do-over.

It sound like you want to update the interior after you remove the glass tanks? But just for the season to to cover the engine, I'd build a new doghouse out of 1x2 and 1/2" plywood, coat it with epoxy paint, and use my existing hardware. You're talking maybe $200!

Alright! Wow what a difference. With the mercruiser exhaust I could hit 60 ish then have to trim it in to get over 60mph. Like 62-63 mph. And the engine was lazy from 50-60. Now when I mat it, it pulls to 68 mph then trim in more speed. Impressive with just an exhaust system. If my speedo is correct it will do 70 + now with a L hand 24 pitch B1 prop. I didn’t hold the speed or really push due to the cheap band clamps I have on the S pipe couplers. I ordered some T bolt style clamps that will be here Friday. The new thermostat housing/water neck worked great. Ran a constant 150-165.

All that is well worth the engine cover hassle. So I guess I’m going to take this on myself. The pipes don't get too hot so I might just open up the cover on the sides and carve up this cover for the season. Its not like anyone is gonna give me anything for it anyway. This guy Raul in Fullerton http://a-1marineservices.com seems legit.

Some of Raul’s work in a similar boat. Have any of you worked with him?

If I remember correctly you're mechanically inclined, since that's the case, do what I did and make your own box then take it to have some upholstery thrown over it. Building the box is the time consuming part, stapling and slicing some vinyl is quick and clean. The box is even more time consuming if you need to resin /seal it for longevity, but since it's only for a season, just build it and forget it.

nobodies gonna notice your half assed dog house while it's cruisin down the river at 40mph, but u will notice it when the boats sitting in your garage waiting for some interior guy to finish it up

Mark is good. He did a huge bimini for me and Inwas happy but he is not cheap and probably not going to want half ass a temp engine cover. If you modify the box I know a guy in Glendale that would be super cheap to re-wrap it for you. He just did my VW seats.
