Interesting question.. if lay down a shit load of salt, and I think that would kill just about anything that would grow in the area?

I’m going through this right now. The landscape supply places have been telling me to go with the heavier felt and to overlap the edges.

Also heavy compaction before you lay the felt.

Hope someone has more info

Lay a couple sheets of 1/2 ply to get to the back and have a laborer keep moving them as you lay material?

even if you only put down one inch of salt that's still a little over three cubic yards of salt. I am not sure I can even find it this time of year locally. Even at 1/3" that's a yard. Which according too my material weight sheet road salt is 2160# per yard.

we used the stuff from costco. seems pretty thick. I have a few inches of mulch on top. The only thing that grew besides what I planted was a bunch of oak trees. damn squirrel tried to bury acorns from my oak tree. They were on top of the fabric growing right out of the split acorn. I did have to round up right around the edge of it where it meets the walkway.

They make this for paver driveways. Keeps the base from migrating into soil below. Heavy duty but not for weeds. Compact dirt roll this out and pack 4" of base on it. Then roll out your weed screed (Costco best price but seasonal) then 4" of gravel on top. Just don't make sharp turns with bobcat as it will tear up weed screen.

Salt is cheap if you find a supplier. My buddy owns a mine. Have thought about that method. One scoop with his loader will fill my dump trailer 6k lbs. I have a slot that was 4" base over weed screen damn weeds have slowly got in from top. Thought of spreading salt over and running plate compactor over. Salt compacts like a rock. His salt pad has like 3' base all salt that is solid packed.

In winter salt is easy and it's only about 30/yard. At 90 degrees not so much.

Get away from looking at the landscape fabric. Use road fabric. Comes in 12' by 100' rolls. Much thicker and lasts longer. Thicker, and better weave for weeds.. jmo

You worry about ruining the property soil
doing that? I imagine it would leach over time.

Heavy was you can...

For what it’s worth - I put down about 4 in on top of heavy felt matt and after a year or two I get stuff growing in the crushed rock not up through the felt.

Site One & HUB has fabric comes in 12,15 &18 ft wide. They have different types of density ( weave) to the fabric.

We just did about 80,000 sq ft with 8 inch thick rock for some porous paving.

You can put 12” of rock.... if you have a area that gathers the wind.... dirt/sand will be a garden for weeds.

Tru dat, I just found a couple 12in weeds that came up out of no where in my firepit in backyard. No dirt even in the damn thing. Filled w glass top to bottom, lol

4" of class 2 road base then 2" of decorative gravel on top. Wet and compact will activate the crushed concrete in the base and partially solidify.

Spray once a year. Very easy to maintain any surface weeds that blow in.

I get a couple weeds growing right out of the rocks on top. Difference being, due to the fabric they have stamina and pluck right out.
