Where do you guys buy good lumber?

I am starting to dip my toe into woodworking and am wondering where you guys go to get good lumber? Seems like most of the big box stores have crazy warped wood and employees that may or may not know what they are talking about.

Recently did a patio cover and was able to source straight and quality wood from BMC (formerly Stock Building Supply).

I don't have a jointer or a planer so looking for S4S, I do have a table saw so I can clean it up a little bit if needed, but can't mill my own wood.

Buy sss, use the ts to cut it just a hair over over and a hand plane to tune it up.

is sss surfaced 3 sides? I've heard that referred to as SLR before I believe, or is that something different?

I live in Phoenix area (Mesa, to be exact) looking for both hard and softwoods. want to build some cornhole boards, liquor boxes, jewelry boxes, shadow boxes, picture frames, bed frames etc etc

Rockler over in PV/Phx is where I go for the small stuff. There’s another good shop north of bell off of the east side of 17. On the frontage road.

The guys at rockler in phx are pretty cool and knowledgeable.

One of the first tools needed when doing woodwork is joiner then planer. I built a cherry dresser in HS while the rest of the class made a cutting board. Bought every tool we had in shop and made my own shop at home. Still have them just need to build me a monster garage and woodshop at current house one of these days I will be able to do custom cabinets in house.

Do some google searches, here in SD we must have 15/20 different businesses probably even more, some do weekend classes / demos some sell just tools, local junior colleges have classes and that means deals at some stores

Hudson & West has been there for at least 5 years. Ganahl opened up last year I think. I have only purchased marine grade plywood for inner fender wells on my boat trailer from Hudson & West but they guys there were very helpful. When Ganahl opened I figured it would hurt them but I've never been in the new Ganahl even though my office is a block away.

5 already damn seemed like 2 or 3 when they broke ground for new Ganahl. I drive by there to get my Breakfast Burritos from Fantastic. My old AYSO coach still owns it Polish sausage no cheese!

Southern California I would go to Jones Lumber. Good pricing and the yard guys aren't jerks. Ganahl is to expensive and their customer service sucks. In the Valley I would go to Northridge lumber.

Woodworkers resource has some decent stuff. I made a curved counter out of T'Zalam for a customer out in Golden Canyon.

Exactly what I was going to say. They can do custom cutting if you need it also. I had them cut some beams down for me for cheap.
