Don't count out two stroke milage. If you ride far, you need to plan with a 2 stroke.
4 strokes for far trail rides or two stroke with desert tank. Haha

Idk about the whole debate, but I will say my YZ426 had about 900 hours on it and she was starting to smoke a little. The cases were replaced one time and the piston, valves, cylinder, chain were all withing spec. I raced the bike, desert racing, and all I did was the regular maintenance. I like 2 strokes as much as everyone else, but the 4 strokes are tough to beat. You're not mixing gas, and you gotta run em in a powerband. I really like the simplicity of putting some 91 octane in the tank and taking off. Even when you want to put around you can just lug em along and they're fine. Still no matter what being on 2 wheels is a fucking blast and this argument will never die of 2 vs 4 strokes.

My 9 yr old rides a crf150r. It’s a real nice bike but a real pain to deal with. We bought it new day before thanksgiving and it needed a valve adjustment already. It’s real hard to start when cold.

Just got my wife a crf250F. This is her first bike. It’s more of a trail bike. It’s a green sticker bike and has electric start. Super easy throttle response and clutch engagement is great.

My vote if he is new is a crf250F or a older crf230F. These bikes are pretty darn maintenance free. If he gets super into it then he can step up to a race style bike like the Honda R series or Yama yz series

Now that 80% of the riders are now in SXS just strap a rotopax of premixed to the roof of a SXS for those long trips.

I dunno..... I've never been on an MX 4 stroke that had as much bottom end grunt as my KX500. I swear it's powerband starts as soon as I fired. Lol!

Ha ha. Riding every day after school, on the weekends. All desert with the majority being in sandy washes just rapping the shit out of it for hours on end.

Don’t get me wrong I love two strokes (I have one hanging off the back of my boat) but in this case it’s not the right application.
I had a whole response types out. I dunno what happened to it. It came down to your experience riding at a young age is going to be apple's to orange's different than his will be (most likely). And since Dad's gonna be the one mentoring him and dad is familiar with 2 strokes, it would make the teaching process much easier. I whole heartedly disagree that this isn't a correct application for a 2 stroke.

Nothing less than a 250. Buy it used just in case he doesn't take to riding.
Or you get get him a 450 Honda or Yamaha quad!

That's awesome! Sounds like you got a smokin deal too. He is going to have a blast on that. And when he wants bigger he has trading stock ;)

250F or 125 would be perfect for him. I've ridden and raced many years and at the weight he is I raced a 250f and 125 just fine plenty of power. Once you are in the 180 range you will notice it doesn't have the power. But for a beginner it will be fine for years. And even a beginner at 180 could ride a 250f just fine. 150 is way too small and a 250 2 stroke and 450 is way too much power. Most people cant even ride a 125 or 250f at its full potential anyways.
