I talked to a guy that works with Mohave Sherrifs Boating Safety Dept. about the Outerlimits, and asked if there were any other accidents. He said there was only the one accident. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Maybe it got swamped, or took on water for reasons other than an accident. When we went by, I couldn't see enough of the boat to tell what size boat it was.

Following....Thanks Dan. Always interested in knowing how boat incidents occur ... good info. I'm sure you were following the 43' OL details. I'm still relatively new to boating but don't recall hearing about big Vees just throwing folks out in lake water so following data on that as it comes in.

Getting throw out of a vee is more common than you think
As soon as they started putting steps in boats it opens up a whole new world as far as safety issues
Anyone with a twin step boat or a cat should take the tres Martin class no matter how long you have driven a boat
You can toss passengers out at even 50 mph if you set up a turn wrong

What Dan said. Chopping the throttle in a stepped V will cause Bow steer, the faster your moving, the more severe change of direction

The slower the easier for it to spin. I am surprised I am not dead after 25 years of fast boats before taking his class. And a twin anything will just spin out if you dont drive it right, in his drills you can watch the gauges and see the process begin.

One of the guys in my class bought a huge outerlimits vhull, had to be close to 50', even with the training he crashed and killed his wife on Lake Pleasant. First boat if I recall.

I was at the nautical when they were pulling this boat up with the balloons. It was in front of the nautical launch ramp. I have no idea what happened, didn’t see an accident so I was thinking maybe they forgot the plug or something to that effect??

Newspaper cover today indicates the sheriff has determined “speed appeared to have been a factor”. Glad we can put that one to rest.

Oh thats right, I recall that one.... dang he got a huge OL as his first boat. Thats an unusual choice I would guess.

Had no idea.... but from what I've read about stepped hulls and how they're designed to let air under hull sounds reasonable. I'm just guessing here but the creation of stepped hulls was to allow less hull in water which equals less resistance thus faster speeds, right? And with that came less control in certain situations I suppose. Have I got that close to correct?

Exactly, Duane just took his class last week for his F32, and Tres said, "an old straight bottom cig is as safe as it gets" lol.

Guess i wanted safety not speed lol

yes a twin step will add 10mph and in a lot of cases a better ride

Were you the guy over the last couple years showing some updates on the repainting of an older Cig? If so how'd it come out if done? If its the one I recall the colors and design were cool.

Yes, well the painter bailed on me, i hired a second one, he got further then had a death in the family, now painter 1 is actually working on finishing it. He redid a lot of the stuff guy 2 did as he didnt like, but whatever progress.

Yup, recall that saga. You've been through plenty on these painters.

I first want to say lots of prayers for Mike and his wife. I don't know him personally but they are part of the Outerlimits family....wishing the best for a speedy recovery.
After 7yrs of running my SV29 I can say that a multi stepped hull is a completely different animal compared to all the others. One thing about this thread that got my attention was I believe RD said something about the drives of the SV43 showed one up and one trimmed in which would be absolutely catastrophic at hi speed in rough conditions. The Outerlimits SV hulls ride very flat in the water naturally so bow steer is always a concern especially if the rear of the boat breaks free. The hulls are very approachable and easy to drive below 80mph. Above 80 you need to be on point and paying attention to what the boat is doing. As a good friend of mine who I have done a lot of road racing with would say "You need to be up on the wheel with this one when your pushing it hard". They are very slippery hulls that require you make quick measured corrections that if not caught could lead to a nasty chine walk which leads to very bad outcomes. I really took my time and logged a lot of seat time getting to know the boat along with the manners of the the hull in various conditions before I really started pushing it hard. You really need to put your ego in check and know when to pull back. 😂.......there is no better reminder of this than a 110+mph violent chine walk to let you know you pushed it a little too far. I have said it before, these type of Vee hull boats are really not for everyone, but if your willing to put in the time and are able to learn them, they run like nothing else you have ever known. Below is a great pic showing the flat running attitude.
