My lovely 21 year old daughter got in a fender bender (her 2nd one) in her 2021 Ford Ranger, other car about $3500-4k plus rental and Ford just told me her trucks needs a Rack and Pinion, “it’s cracked which could have been a previous damage from a off road trip”

So I’ll be $10k in if I pay out of pocket for both.

Question is do I pay out of pocket and not have 3-5 years of rate increase 25-40%?

Turn it into insurance. It's why you have it. At 21 years old she ought to be somewhat financially responsible for herself. If shes still on your insurance then I would suggest she pay the increase in premium.

I would let the insurance company deal with it, not worth your effort. My son had two cars totaled before he was 23 yrs olds I didn't see a huge increase; we are with AAA.

10k in damage you turn it in especially if she doesent have anything else chargeable.

Lets say the price jumps $500 every 6 months for 3 years you get to spread 3k over time. 10k is a large chunk.

If it was 2k in total damage i would tell you to handle it privately.

Bummer deal for sure Jeff. Hope that Jojo and others involved are doing well. I’d go the insurance route for coverage. As others have noted set things up going forward to have her get coverage once whe it out of school and on her own. Other than this I hope that your amazing daughter is doing well. She is such a bright star and our family just adores her and your son. 👍

One of my good buddies always told me if you can afford to pay out of pocket just do it. Only use insurance when you absolutely have to

At 21 my kids are definitely responsible for their actions accident or not.
I would probably turn it in to insurance but any increase and deductible comes out their pocket.

first mistake was buying her a 2021 ranger 🤣 Get them the 1990 ranger, throw in the Tiktok Ranger song and have her go wild.
It's not "if they get in an accident/take it off road/do something silly" it's ... when. ;)

I sure don't see 10k in those photos.......that's for sure.

I see $2000-ish for a body shop to fix the subaru
My buddys van just got clobbered in the same fashion, but worse. His bill was $2300 to have the door and 1/4 panel fixed and painted at a good shop.

The Ranger's rack and pinion is $1600 from Ford, but it looks like it's on backorder (Ford . . .typ!!!!)

Auto salvage yards have used racks that fit the '21 ranger between $500 - $1000, with a part grade of "A" - maybe go that route?
Here's a list from Car-Partpro.com. You can search by location distance or best price. Some yards ship, some don't.
Worth a look!

A big part of the problem is that she and the truck live in Boise and I’m not. If it was here I’ve got people that could hook my up. The rack is electric and dealer only programming apparently… Ford told me about $4000 and the other kids car is $3500 to $4000 and if I kick in some Rent-A-Car for both of them I’ll be at 10k in no time.

I already had the truck and needed her to be in something reliable and safe in the snow since I have no connections in the automotive world in Boise.

I would just let the insurance take care of it. If the insurance goes up have your daughter pay the difference or make her pay half. Thats what im doing my with mine due to the fuck ups she had.

My daughter had 2 accidents within 8 months and State Farm would not allow her to be on my insurance anymore more, so I hope that doesn’t happen to you.

Made a claim and she will be paying the difference.
Probably the most prudent thing to do. I was gonna suggest fixing other car & leaving hers all dented.😊
Yes, that's exactly what I did with my son. He hasn't dinged a thing since😀😄

@Jefftowz - smart move moving it to insurance.
My oldest had to accidents within 6 months. 1 was not his fault.
His rate increased by $300 a year. I was able to offset the increase by increasing the deductible to 1k.

I ended up making him pay the deductible on both claims. Since he was still in high school he had to use his summer job money to pay me, plus he was on yard duty for a few months to make up the rest.

Insurance - the numbers you are hearing now will go up when the work starts!

They will find other things that will need to be fixed.

Agreed! I see that curb rash/impact damage on the rim of the damaged car, and I suspect they'll find suspension damage ( if he has my luck).

$10,000, I'd submit to insurance and get everything done correctly. I would also have my 21yr old child start chipping away at the price hike. Thats the best way to learn personal responsbility.

My vote to insurance , my daughter’s car was broken in at a college campus garage. Through the door lock and other misc damage. Body shop bill 4,800.00 . Used my deductible and got it fixed no increase , and no more parking it at college.
