Most likely a LiDAR flight. Light Distancing And Ranging. Very effective for mapping terrain, electrical circuits, roads, and other things a company might want 3D data on that can contain other attributes.

The probe you are talking about that is mounted up front is probably the LiDAR sensor and other associated sensors. The sensor pulses lasers thousands of times per second and reads the returns to create a very accurate data set of what is below. That data can be processed in many different ways to give you relative distance between objects, help identify what certain objects are, or accomplish a variety of other analytical functionalities.

It’s around a lake or lakebed. Pretty sure it is Lidar. They are looking at historical lake bed levels. Possibly trying to see if it’s feasible to repair some man made drainages. Done all the time in the pothole regions. Really cool conservation work.
