A post by @toto got me to thinking about what would I rate my boat if I was selling it compared to what someone else would rate it. 1 being on the lower side and 10 on the higher side. What are people considering when looking at a boat for sale? What’s matters the most to them?
Price
Hours
Condition
Color / gel scheme
Motor /Drive package
Year
Make
Location
Salt water/ only fresh water
Obviously a buyer wants the most bang for their buck. What are your must haves?
Let’s go back to @toto post where he’s looking to buy a Hallett 255 with a mercury 525 and looking for info from any owners. @OldSchoolBoats mentioned he would let his go with a fresh 525 and drive with break in hours only, new stereo system and it’s a nice well kept boat for 85k. I don’t remember the year of joes Hallett 04 or 05 I think. If I was to rate Joes boat I would rate it a solid 8.5 only because of it being a mid cabin and having checkers in the gel scheme. He may rate it higher I don’t know but that’s just my opinion. I feel Joes boat is priced right if not a little low.
Now to rate mine 🤣
2009 WTOB
Merc 525 with XR drive
Classic gel scheme in blue
Just at 310 hours
Always maintained and detailed
New stereo system
Added swim step
Boat is perfect
I would rate it a solid 9.5 (would you)
And wouldn’t let it go for less than 130k
Am I out of my mind? Maybe. Couldn’t come close to a new one for that price.

This is not a call at thread toward @toto & @OldSchoolBoats. I respect their opinions.

2009 Fun Deck
Merc 600 w/ Whipple stage 2
Loud as fuck gel that’s not everyone’s cup of tea
530 hours, new top end.
Brand new updated interior (EVERYthing, up to 2024 specs for the most part)
Huge stereo

I love this boat.

Only thing I’d change is to get the extended swim step on the back, but eliminator kind of forgot about me and I’m bitter about it, and now it’s boating season and I don’t want to drag it out there.

I got a quote for a new one with the same specs as mine, for 365k+. I’m good with the ‘09 hooptie.

She’s a solid 9 in my eyes.

If it floats long enough to fire up and make it up river a ways, automatic 10. Toon, deck, jet...aluminum fishing boat...whatever gets you on the water. If you only go up river...it's much easier to get back to the launch ;)
The looks my little 12' gets "size doesn't matter" from the Leo's is hilarious, it floats, throws a tiny rooster, downside fuel weight, doesn't get me far. Like you say if it floats get on and off great day.

I would give mine an 8-8.5 because it isn't 100% perfect, but you would be hard pressed to find another 2004 in as good condition. Only thing I need to do is put some new rims/tires on the trailer. I had some asswipe do the bunks and he did a horrible job so those need to be redone too.

Your boat is as close to perfect as there is and I know how much you have done to get it to that point. Let's not forget that the system isn't just some stereo system, it is a Speed Of Sound system that is stupid loud!! Top end done, New floors, swimstep, stereo, trailer wheels, fenders, etc. It definitely will fetch all the money and I definitely think it will be in the 6 figure range.

Funny, I think about this topic all the time. Seems a LOT of people buying used stuff want it to be pristine like it's brand new to qualify as "clean". But to me, "clean" is relative. They're used boats, shit aint new. So my version of super nice or clean has varied from others. But never when I'm selling my own boats. I'm very upfront with any and all blemishes or issues or whatever because I don't want to be misleading or waste anyone's time. I do avoid placing a number 1-10 on condition though. I let people determine that for themselves. Price is the price. You don't like it, don't buy it.

Some really nice boats on this thread so far!! Lookin' like 10's to me!! :D

Thanks Joe. No way in hell I think I could ever get that. It’s just what it would take for me to consider getting rid of it. Who knows, next week I might fire sale it 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣😳

One person's idea of clean definitely may not be the same for another.

Clean to me is

1. Has it been taken care of
2. Regular maintenance
3. How was it used?
4. Was it updated/upgraded through out the years?

Used boats are that used.

I can find a boat with 100 hours on it that is best to shit and neglected or I can find the budman boat where it’s super fucking clean.

Point is clean is spectrum like your gender hahah jk. But yes to each their own.

Top considerations in no particular order:
- color/gel scheme
- condition
- power
- maintenance history
- # of owners
- type of water it was used in. Fresh is preferred
- price

People dont sell 10's. Thats the problem. If they are a 10, like a woman, they are getting rid of them for a reason! You just dont know the reason! 😂
Disagree... there are a lot of 10's that get divorced. People change....what interest them this year does not next year. I have had the fortune of having a number of 10 boats and was fickle and wanted something different. The next owner thought they were 10's too.

I give mine a rating of Lot Lizard.

Looks good’ish from 400 yards, cheap, dependable, and knows exactly what it does best.

I’m always on the hunt for a college aged escort type though if I could afford it…

Thats what happened to me....I bought my Laveycraft in 2022 because it was clean and in my mind a 10...even confirmed was completely updated/refreshed by Laveycraft in 2019 (see below)...after owning it for a year I noticed that the floor in the open bow area started to feel soft and then started noticing some mold on the floor....ended up pulling up the carpet to see what was going on...found out that for whatever reason there was no way for the water to drain from bow area under the floor...so over the years of use and rain, etc...the water just collected in there and rotted everything out....so my once 10 is now about a 3.5

first thing my old man told me, always head up river and you can almost always get back to the ramp.

I’d give ours a 7.5. Mechanical is a 9.5. Fairly recent motor/drive refresh. Runs great, no issues. Cosmetic: Due to have the beach rash touchup soon. Needs a stereo tune-up, new Bimini and I’d have to do the interior to sell it.

I loved everything about my DCB except the ride. Your boat would be the V-Bottom equivalent of that to me excluding the ride of course. I've just heard they ride fantastic and the smile on Shannon says she is comfortable as a passenger. That is the perfect V-bottom boat. I will say Daves boat is also a perfect twin that I would love to have as well.

I would say a 8-8.5. I got all these Kids to haul around. So I prefer it not perfect or I would lose my mind. Nieces and Nephews and Nieces kids in the pic. They all call me Uncle Nick. I do my best to make sure there living the best life at the River.

I’d go 9/10. If I fixed the beach rash I don’t think you would find anything wrong with it. Oh and my speedo works sometimes. Been meaning to get a gps speedo but it’s way on the bottom of the list honestly

I'm with you. If I had a "perfect 10" or even a 9 I would have a hard time enjoying it! And certainly wouldn't run it the place I do. But I enjoy the hell out of it!

So we are rating the boat against itself? Not other boats is the way I read this. How close your boat is, rated to the day it was built.

So a 30 yr old perfectly maintained canoe is a 10 out of 10.

Mine would be a 8 out of 10, the trailer it sits on started life as a 4.

9.5

Price, we all know that we overpaid (but best deal at the time) -.01
Hours, 70, maybe above average boater -.02
Condition, got a couple scratches in tubes -.02
Color, probably considered as good
Moter/drive, Merc V10, 350. It has a drinking problem
Year, 2024 (1 year to us)
Make, Bennington, claims luxury and strong reputation
Location, Havasu and Powell (fresh water only)

Must have, Extreme tripple axle custom trailer with Method wheels, upgraded Rockford Fosgate stereo by Wired for Sound.

I'd say my toon gets a solid nine because it does exactly what I wanted it to do and has been trouble free for twelve years. Its very cheap to run and still looks new.My Schiada whaler is lower down on the scale but its 44years old.Its in good shape and has a few flaws but its a reliable old tank.Old school cool.

Looking at most of you all posting the rating of your boats. Several that I know and have seen blows me away how low you are noting. Because of this I must have to claim my boat is a solid 3.75 now😢

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Like the beach rash stuff. To me, it's like having grey hair...it means the boat has lived and had some fun. A loose seam stitch, a worn bimini, just signs of a life well lived. In the car world, guys will spend enormous amounts on building their dream cars. When they finish, some are afraid to drive them. A museum piece, be it boat or car, is no fun.

If you have pics of your boat on the water, even, dare I say it, on the beach, the boat's doing it's job. It's making memories and helping people have fun!

One of these days, not sure when that will be, I hope to be solid 9.5 or 10 based on time and money spent putting this thing together 😁 I've dubbed it my 50th birthday present to myself, so I have about a year to finish it!

My wife loves our boat so much she would give our boat a 12 lol. I would say close to a 10 based on the same year, condition and motor. I think you need to rate against same boat and year.

Just had my bottom worked on. The boat’s not mine. 😝 I can‘t wait to see it. Should have any beach rash taken care of. I am hoping this puts me into a solid 4.5 level.

You are absolutely right Kevin!! All my joking aside what good is a boat if it never hits the water or on a beach. No offense to Shiatta owners. We have had a few friends out to experience boating with us. Some love it….then you have my mother that didn’t really love it. But then again she did not like off-roading. Just got a text last week with one family sending an image of the time we had on the water asking when are we going to do it again. 👍
