Speed queens do not have internal heaters- that takes them out of the running for me. I have things that need true sanitization without bleach.

The Asian brands (LG/ Samsung ) large drum size are accompanied by a * noting they dont recommend you actually fill the drum fully.

The electroluxes perform well, have heaters, and large drum size machines, and I have a set of these they are pretty good.

The Miele although not the largest drum holds as much as the larger machines are rated for and heats the water to scorching 170 + as well as spins so fast eth clothes come out nearly dry - just hang them up and go.

If given a choice between the largest drum asian stuff and the slightly smaller drum but higher performing Miele with Id buy Miele all day every day.

I got 15K cycles out of my last one.

what’s the reasoning behind “true” sanitation?

in-laws have Miele on their trawler...they are exactly as you state..clothes are pretty much dry. I hung my jeans on a line in the engine room and they were dry before we left to dinner. Super impressed.

Samsung however should never be allowed to make a washer again...they are garbage...and leak...their refrigerators are just as bad seal wise.

I live in a rural area and deal with animal waste, and dead critters, and a whole variety of let's just call it crap, babies, puppies....

You either have to use bleach which ruins fabrics, or you have to sustain 140 to kill germs.

in addition - heat cleans tough stains better. Oil, grease diesel, grass, mud, blood...all gets cleaner with heat.

Im pretty picky about how certain stuff gets done and have 20 year old silkscreened t shirts that are like new - never seen a dryer.

Anything with elastic in it lives at min twice a long if you air dry it.

There's two kinds of clothes - stuff that you air dry, and stuff you don't care about.
(towels and wash/dishcloth/ bedding some clothes that can take heat are dryer material)

Plus - running a dryer add heat to the house and uses energy in some form, either gas or electricity.
I put stuff on a rack and either just let it dry, or turn on a fan if Im in some kind of hurry which Im usually not.

Why dont you just turn your water heater up and run a hot wash?

I will say after running our first speed queen load, is that the washer is noisier than our previous unit.

Went through hell with Samsung. Bought speed queen washer and dryer and they are by far one of the best you can buy. Clothes are actually clean and almost dry right out of the washer as well. Drum type. We actually had an old Maytag that was 15 years and it was great. It was going out finally. I told the wife to pick a matching washer and dryer. We bought new Samsungs. It took a year of going through the warranty process until we were finally refunded on them. The repair guys coming out for the Samsungs advised us to get speed queens.

Agreed, the toploaders will be a little louder than front load ones (if that's what you replaced) due to more robust innards and agitation. Worth it in the long run IMO.

My 4 year old LG dryer just took a dump.
New part is $250 and back ordered.

New Samsung dryer with my employee discount was $400/retails around $900.

So i ordered the samsung, I sure hope its decent…

Had a top loader before, but no agitator but the whole drum moved side to side with a disk on the bottom that moved to create a vortex, was a cool looking washer with a clear top. But after a while I began to wonder if it was really “washing” clothes or just made them smell good. Lol.

It's not hot enough at the source much less down the pipes into the cool drum.

You have to sustain 140 for a decent amount of time I think 12 min is the time.
Do you boil your shrimp and potatoes in the thing as well? Honestly, never even thought of cooking in the washer but you have me thinking I’m doing it all wrong, Sir…🤔

Yeah i checked a few online places.
But once i tore the dryer open, and i considered my time…it was an easy decision to say Fuck It and spend $150 more for a new dryer that would be delivered and hooked up.

And they took away the pile of parts that used to be our old dryer 😂

My wife owns her own business and uses the home W & D for it. She bought a Samsung set about 2.5 years ago and the dryer crapped out a month ago. She was never happy with them, to many eco settings that didn't wash or dry the clothing's adequately. I've done a deep dive on home appliances a couple of years ago and Samsung and LG suck.

Due to RDP I was aware of Speed Queen and I was dead set on buying a SQ W&D set but no one had one local and we needed it that day. We bought a Maytag Commercial W&D. It's been a month + and they do exactly what they advertise. Top loader washer ( small capacity is my wife' objection) but flat out work. The clothes come out clean and the dryer gets it done quickly without shrinking everything. They lack the basics like soft close lids etc. and are much lighter than competitors and no frills looking but have done what they are advertised to do in the month we have owned them. One of the selling points is that all the components can be accessed from the front for replacement, seemed like a self defeating selling point (shouldn't need to replace parts for a decade +) but my mechanical fix shit myself side like this.

Update on the "commercial" Maytag product, the washer now has an apatite for clothing. There is large gap in the tub where the bottom of the agitator is recessed in to the tub and it lets clothing get rapped up in the agitator. I spent a couple of hours last night trying to take the agitator off to un fuck one of my wife's hair salon capes. I took today and tomorrow off from work (first vacation days I've taken this year) and spent most of today trying to get a tech out to fix it which starts the return process. Judd and Black has been responsive but my wife is not happy and doesn't trust the machine any longer, and I don't blame her. A no frills bare bone basic machine should do the one thing it's designed to do without issues like this.

Judd and Black is taking the Maytag set back and we should get our SQ set Saturday 9/16. Had to have a direct and confrontational discussion with the vendor manager but they are going to make it right, and I appreciate that.. Wife and I wanted to buy a SQ set when we walked in the door, feel like we were talked out of it and the lead times told to us were not accurate for SQ. Shame on me for not verifying, but once the unit that was promoted and purchased and didn't live up to the talk, I dug in. I can can be a major PITA to anyone but choose to take the highroad right off the bat anymore. My better half got to see a side of me this weekend that I'm not all that proud of. I can be a complete ass whole, and was, but that's what it took to get what we want and paid for.

Had an old Sears extra capacity washer (Kenmore I think) since 1991. Made a few repairs through the years. When the gear box took a dump. Finally tossed it a couple years ago. Got a used Samsung from a friend. Wife has always hated it. Has the digital board with the jingles bells that go off through the cycles. No agitator and low water consumption.

The new to us river pad came with small basic apartment style stacker unit. Wife says it works better than home washer. About that same time learned of the Speed Queen brand in this thread. Found a really clean used residential unit. It was delivery and installed for $300 cash on a Sunday night. Reminds me of the Sears unit that lasted thirty years. Wife is super happy with it too. Sometimes Craigslist is the best.

Thanks for the Speed Queen tip.

I am not that compliant, and do research before buying anything and have expectations for what I pay for and usually go for the highest quality I can afford at the time expecting longevity and performance. If it's cheap, all bets are off, expensive? Yea, it's either going to last or I'm getting my money back. Over my 5 decades on this planet I've had issues with companies like Borla, SLP, Summit Racing, Chevrolet, a couple of auto warranty companies, Stearns and Fosters and now Maytag. Being knowledgeable and aggressive in demanding what you expect and or resolution is key in my experience.

Yea I hear yea. Wife and I research for a long time before we buy anything and most always make the right choice. Washer went out and I had fixed it multiple times. Wife decided to go down while I was working and buy one. I was not happy about it and said whatever. Boy did she regret what they talked her into. Hence why we have SQ washer and dryer now. She thought she could sell it. 4 months later with it just sitting in the garage and Offer Up, I gave her 24 hours to sell it or it was going bye bye. Brand new 900.00 washer. It went bye bye.

Nothing better than a Speed Queen. There’s a reason all Laundry Mat’s have them

LG Front loaders with direct drive and ball bearing motors. The biggest capacity LG's have all the right features. Theirs a sticker on them stating that.

How have these held up for you? I really want to know, my kenmore set from the 90’s is on its last legs and I’ve seen too many fancy new W/D sets eat shit after a few years.

Most dont give much thought to the "poop stew" that is their laundry and basically live in clothes and wipe their faces with washcloths and towels covered in whatever was in their families socks and underwear.

If they care they use bleach, heat is more convenient than that and better for your clothes which is why the commercial guys machine all have heaters or are plumbed directly to a super hot source.

Speed Queen is a solid choice and the number 2 brand in the US market.

The German Miele is still superior.

The two use mostly equivalent level components and sub components making both seriously long lived repairable machines.

It has an internal heater.
It has a full SS drum and ladles vs SQ's plastic ladles.
Miele spins faster 1600 RPM vs 1200.

The speed queen has a bit more capacity 22 vs 19.8 LB.

I bought a matching pair of LG's in Dec. We hadn't ever had a pair that matched always replacing one or the other as they broke etc... The LG's have been good albeit it's only been since Jan and it's just two of us so not getting overworked with kids etc.... Bought them from Costco seamless ordering/delivery. All of the install and haul away of old units included in price.

We had lg front loaders and they worked great. However the washer seal started to smell even after we leave the door open and clean it constantly. I replaced the seal twice over its 10 year lifespan and always shop vac’ed the seal drain hose to keep it clean and clear. So this time we went with a pair of Samsungs with the biggest top loader. The damn thing complains about being unbalanced constantly. Runs another rinse cycle to loosen up the clothes, drains, spins, unbalanced, Repeats 3 times. It’s freaking annoying and I’m ready to just sit the thing out front and go back to the front loader and all its complications. The front loader would spin so fast the clothes would be almost dry and the dryer cycle would take like 30 minutes. Now it’s an hour. I hate em.

My biggest complaint is the new washers only have a small agitator disk on the bottom that chews up sheets and clothes and uses a tiny bit of water. SQ fills all the way up with a huge barrel and tall agitator. Cleans so much better.

Yup.

A washer with a heater in wont ever smell because the heat kills the germs and any build up of muck. You dont even need to keep the door open.

There is no test for a machines ability to balance and spin out a load, but there are gigantic difference in performance.
The drum capacity of a machine has zero bearing on its actual usable capacity so saying the drum is 5 cubic feet means nothing.
My 4.5CF Electrolux can actually handle less than my 2.7CF Miele.

People talk about wash times and often say front leaders taking longer (not always true at all) , but laundry is a " cycle" consisting of wash and dry and the faster spinning machine ends up making a bigger difference than any supposed difference in wash time.

When you rack dry your good stuff the difference in spin speed becomes highly elongated- a pair of jeans from a 1100 to a 1600 RPM is major.

Agreed - this design is the worst.

My kids got one of these and it's a joke.

A top loader with a central agitator does a much better job than one of those disk deals.

Id still pick a front loader, but between those two the one with the central tall agitator wins.

Just purchased a Speed Queen washer and dryer. Great machines so far. Threw out a GE that still had a warranty, very noisy, clothes got twisted and easily off balance.

It is and they are, although if I couldn't get a Miele for some reason - I'd get a Bosch.

The Mieles get stupid expensive and feature laden, some of the rack upgrades are nice, but other stuff to me is just showing off - I never wanted nor needed (to replace) a light in my dishwasher.
I buy the basic models and got 22 years out of the first one.
Even the 1300.00 basic model is built to a fantastic standard.

Bosch is built to a 10-15 year cycle standard and the Miele 20.

The interior has a few notable differences.

The Miele has a SS lower arm, whereas the bosch's is plastic - with SS you can make the unit thinner (give back another bit of space to the whole thing) , and holes smaller and run higher pressure without deforming them. Pressure and heat will slightly deform the plastic closest to the heat source - and thats the lower spray arm.

Both use a plastic middle arm which is preferred as the concern here is that the middle arm can hit a plate and if its steel its more likely to chip the plate.

For the upper tray (which Miele invented but the patent ran out) the Miele has a full rotating arm, where the Bosch has a sprinkler.

The Miele opens the door to assist and speed up drying at the end of the cycle. Not sure if Bosch has copied that yet.

On sound level both are very quiet.
There is no standardization in sound measurement - and many ways to cheat it.
Miele divulges how they measure sound level and its very honest - they fill it full of pots and pans and run it on the pots and pan/ sanitize setting and include the measurements of the pumps drain cycle, everyone else..who knows and who cares how quiet an empty washer is on an eco cycle.

In my opinion the Miele has a better more flexible racking system, but this is often widely debated but in loaded piece count challenges Miele typically wins but not always and when it doesb't its in 2nd place. You can get a "Bob load" in either.

When it comes to dishwasher loading I'm the Shinto master of the house - Neither the wife unit nor the boys can touch my mastery in loading. I take pride in my loads (lol). When this job needs doing right - step aside and let dad handle it.

I rarely run Miele tabs, but they are the best. Of the 7 known enzyme types most tabs or powders contain 1 -3 but the Miele pack all of them in their tabs. I keep a grip of them handy for the 1-2 time a year ultra nasty loads.

I hate em.
The wife is obsessed with cleaning out the washers in our homes. She has a very acute sense of smell. As well as the other cute things about her. 🤪 🤪 🤪 🤪 Not sure if you guys know this…..the drain not my wife. 😁

You must be an appliance Guru 😳. How the hell do you know so much about this stuff???

Guru, no.

Just a discerning, experienced customer, that is well informed on the subject matter.

I travel a lot and get to see what people all over the world use, as well as having family and friend experience growing up and in my own homes.

Right now I've got two houses full of Miele products.

So the Kenmore washer and dryer we have had for 17 years just went out the door. Dryer got wonky but the washer was fine. Both were the HE5t.

Replaced them with an Electrolux front loader set from Lowes Outlet. Both were brand new in boxes, special order returns for $500 off the normal price, each. Used that to buy the pedestals from Home Depot.

Got the 5 year warranty on both just in case.

What was concerning to me when they installed the new ones was the comment from the install crew that the new ones are so much lighter than the old ones they carried out. That’s a red flag to me that the new ones are probably a lot more plastic. I doubt I get the same 17 years out of these like I did with the Kenmore.

Old set is the red ones, new set is the grey.

Went through this a year ago. Most new stuff is made of plastic, hence the weight.

We did the speed queen route without digital controls. The cycles are quick and has a deep fill option. But they are noisy.

Hopefully we get 17yrs too like our last GE at.

Well we are off to a hell of a start. We have two days to do test runs with it for any need to exchange them, and the washer is leaking from the door seal on the first run. If it doesn’t go away on its own today we will call it in for a replacement.

We went LG 7-8 years ago. Washer is a top loader. Didn’t want what you’re going through.
Gas dryer. Zero issues so far. And yes. I probably just jinxed everything.

Yikes, if leaking already I wouldn’t keep them as it’s common with that style.

We do a crap ton of laundry (wife does) and our twin girls always need somthing clean and the perma press wash is like 30 min. Stuff comes out really clean with the agitator.

They just don’t look fancy and like I said much noisier.

18 reliable years. Get heavy use.
I recommend getting the top of the line of any make. Direct drive with ball bearing motors with the LG. That's mentioned on stickers on the LGs.

Well after the first run I opened the door and massaged the door seal, as well as wiped it down with a damp rag and the door face. I’ve done two washes since and no leaks. Maybe the door seal was tweaked. But to your point I probably won’t chance it and just request the exchange.

I know LG is popular but I had a guy in the appliance business tell me years ago LG stood for “Low Grade”, so I won’t buy them.

And while Samsung makes great TVs, I won’t buy their appliances either.

My other choices at Lowe’s (Outlet) were Whirlpool and Maytag. Both of them didn’t look better than the Electrolux.

We are almost a year in on the Speed Queen set and have had zero issues. Yea, they look like a bare bones appliance but they just perform as advertised.

I do not recall where your laundry is in the house but if it has a long dryer vent run, make sure its clean. My dryer has a long run and when it gets built up with stuff it definitely makes the dryer not work as well. Just throwing that out there.
Even with a short run if not cleaned regularly
