While you're in the tank shorten the vent line flush with the top of the inside of the tank. It will allow for about 5 more gallons in the tank. It's called the Harpoon mod or something.

I did the Hutch & Harpoon mods (dumb names) in my 7.3 tank years ago. Went from 28 - 33 gallons (short bed).

Edit:
Harpoon/ Hutche mods

Sweet. Thank you.

You could always do a Beans Sump on the bottom on the tank and abandon the stock draw straw. It can be done without dropping the tank as well.

Without dropping the tank??

Do you have a link to this witchcraft??

Thanks!

you will probably get a diesel bath but the tank stays in the truck. Some people dont like it hanging down under the tank and think it will get hit by road debris and come off but they did a torture test and slammed it with a sledge hammer and it didnt budge.

Both great mods...the sump has only one draw back and that's if your off roading there always is the possibility of knocking the thing off in a high center situation.
This guys channel is a outstanding resource of knowledge on the 7.3...Ive spent a few hours watching his videos...very informative.

Do you have an aftermarket tank? I know short bed truck of that era are 29 gallon tank and long beds are 38 gallons. FWIW my moms 2000 7.3 kept running out of fuel at a 1/4 tank and I think the fix was in the instrument cluster.
This is a first I've heard of a fuel pick up problem on a 7.3. Maybe it did break since the truck is lifted and I bet it's a titty sagging bumpy ride.

I personally think even if you are rock crawling that it would tear the tank apart before the sump lets go. Both would be detrimental regardless as the tank would no longer hold fuel. I don't think the OP would have that problem as I would assume that ford is not a rock crawler.

I'm 99.9 percent sure it's stock.

Long bed crew cab diesel. My gas F350 had dual tanks.

I Normally Never let it get below half a tank, so it's probably fell off Years ago! 🤣

It's too expensive to fill up at anything less than half full! 😱

You are correct. Although...

I spend a fair share of time off road. I don't need a stick ripping off that fuel line.

And then there is the baffling issue.

I haven't looked inside the tank yet, but there must be some baffling in the stock location? I definitely don't want to delete that.

Thanka for the info though! 👍🏼

Highly recommend an auxiliary tank...Ive got a 60 gallon/toolbox in my SB.

I edited my post with a little more and the long bed tanks are 38 gallons for the 99-07 models, maybe even the 6.4 trucks. What year is the truck?

No problem. I hope you get it fixed without too much headache. You can always look into taking the bed off the truck instead of dropping the tank. did that on my old chevy s10 as well as my extended cab 1500. 11 bolts, unplug wiring harnesses and 4 people to pick it up and set it on the grass. work pretty well for us. If you have access to a gantry crane it would make it even easier.

I ran out a fuel with the gauge at a quarter tank.

Of course I didn't Know I ran out a fuel, it just started running like shit! 🤬

I'm on the way to a doctor's appointment, so I parked it, called my neighbor to take me to the doc, and my daughter brought me home after.
I was pissed, I didn't call the tow truck till around 10pm, and it sat in the driveway for Weeks.

My first call was to @Flyinbowtie

We discuss a few things, I check em out, but no resolution was found.

So then I call my BIL, to ask what 7.3 experts we know, and he reminds me about @catmandu on here, duh!

I give Doug a call, and we check out the lift pump on the frame rail. It's buzzing like it's supposed to, but it just doesn't sound right.

And...

When I pulled off the intake line to it, no fucking fuel comes out! Shit!

So I put 10 gallons in it, and the POS starts right up. Shit Fuck!

Now the gauge reads a half a tank, and have a single 50 gallon tank.

I go fill it up, and it takes Exactly 25 gallons.

So yeah, I ran outa fuel at a quarter tank cause the fuel pick up fell off.

Just like a Chebby oil pump pick up, the damm thing just slides on! 🤬

Guess I'll be pulling the tank out soon. Meanwhile, I gotta keep it above a 1/4 tank! 😜

If you have a stock tank and put 10 gallons in and then 25 gallons... you're close to the full capacity of a stock long bed tank which is 38 gallons. Stock tanks are plastic and rounded. Aftermarket are usually metal and square corners. I suspect you have a gauge calibration issue.

Have you ever changed a tune with a handheld programmer while filling up with fuel? I know that will mess with the fuel gauge calibration.

I have never heard of a factory tank over 38 gallons, I'm certain it's aftermarket

You have to drop the tank for the in tank fuel pickup and vent trimming mods. Not a big deal, dropped my tank using 2 floor jacks. I also removed the in tank screens that clogg up and installed an external clear Racor 30 micron filter.

The sump is something newer I haven't researched at all. Watched a quick vid on it though, seems like a good ide. I'd be worried about semi truck tire debris ripping that thing off the bottom of the tank without a proper shield.

Explore any option that will make fuel filter changes a more frequent event, LOL.

No matter which ya do, drop that tank and scrub it my friend...please.

Well that’s a lot better than the damn whole fuel system getting destroyed because of the fuel pump coming apart like a lot of people are dealing with

My Mustang was the same way. Well the gauge broke and wouldn’t go under 1/4 so I just filled it up every time and knew I needed to fill up at 280 or so on the tripmeter. Not easy for a high schooler to be able to fill up a tank every time.

Last fuel pump I did I didn’t drop the tank.
I lifted the bed.
Unfortunately the last year of the 7.3 in a Ford pickup was early 2003...low miles or not these trucks are 20+ years old and the bed bolts are damn near welded to the frame...ask me how I know. I would definitely try the bed removal option first but don't break the bolts. Option two is a dirty/nasty situation...no matter which way ya look at it its a shitty place to be...tank removal is no fun.

My Harley is like that. The gauge is a complete mess. 🙄

When the trip odometer hits 250, I know it's time to get gas.

It can't be the fuel pickup. 3/4 of a 38 gallon tank is 28.5. He put 35 gallons in when the gauge read 1/4. 3 gallons left in the tank should be near E and illuminate the low fuel light, not at 1/4.
Fords does have fuel tank problems but it's the tank lining found in the cab and chassis trucks.

Do tell! 98 early half or second half? 😄
As you know the the 12V and 24V were split in two in 98.
Pismo? We must know each other?
Just for the record my 2003 7.3 has been on Pismo twice...I got other shit for that.

My 1990 f250 x-cab 4x4 long bed 7.3 had 2 tanks.
Front tank was 17gal. Rear tank was 15gal.
Never had an issue with the tank selector. If you ran either tank low and any water was in it the truck would accelerate in rpm’s on its own.

I had a similar issue with my dodge diesel. There is a cup on the bottom of the fuel pickup with a filter in the bottom of it. With a full tank the diesel flowed over the cup and into the pump. Once it got down to the top of the cup the filter was clogged and it starved for fuel and went into limp mode. Keep it full and it ran great.

Just had a fuel issue on my 2500HD and had to have it towed. Going with this to fix the problem:

487.webp

Yea, every older d-max should have one honestly. I tossed one on mine not that long ago.

Id walk up to the guy like I was his best friend, so happy to see him, and kick him square in the nuts as I was shaking his hand...

Oops! My foot slipped! 😁
